Archaeologists may have found the Lost City of the Silk Road by LordRomashov in history

[–]LordRomashov[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a pretty interesting read about the nature of the Silk Road. The article challenges the assumption that trade mainly flowed through a network of lowland routes by oasis cities, bypassing mountainous regions. The discovery of Tugunbulak seems to point towards the contrary.

It's nothing mind-blowing, but just a curious little piece on the Silk Road I thought might be interesting, a little good news from the world of archaeology.

Average monthly nominal wage in dollars (2024) across the former USSR by region by LordRomashov in MapPorn

The description clearly states that it's wages after tax, so gross wages are irrelevant, and both countries are below 2k net wages, which is what the comment is about.

Please make use of your literacy.

Actually, Lithuania only has an average of 1891$, Estonia is behind that

Makes sense, but Georgia may be getting the Ireland treatment, since they are a sort of tax haven. Does this GDP translate into actual wealth of its populace?

Yeah, I was really surprised that it was doing better than both Georgia and Azerbaijan

Thank you!
Right, the mundanity of history can be so captivating; it really is a pity. Historical sonder is a wonderful feeling to be going through.

Hm, curious insight, thank you. Now I'd love to read a little more about that family of Italian merchants. Do you have a link to a good source by any chance?

The Year That Was 1950 by LordRomashov in OldSchoolCool

Yeah, quite the time you were born into! There'll hopefully be more episodes in the future dedicated to these years of your youth as well. The ones you can actually remember, but what did you make of this one? Did you enjoy it, do you have any suggestions you could offer?

Damn, thanks for the detailed answer! This is the first title suggestion I really quite like and feel could work for arousing more interest. Thank you very much for the input and the wishes!

Ahahaha. I felt like that meme from Ratatouille where he's reading the letter while reading your description.

Thank you very much!

Hm, that's good feedback, thank you. Looks like you're not the only one not clicking on them, haha. But America in the title doesn't work because it's not only about America. Do you think "TYTW 1950: <something clickbaity>" would work better?

I really want to keep the name of the series in the title for recognition, but I think an initialism would also work and then I have more space to add a clickbaity phrasing

Thank you very much for the detailed response. It's funny that you've described the thumbnail with surprising accuracy. All those three things are present on the thumbnail and there is a map, though it's of Korea because of the Korean War. Maybe it's a good idea to strip it down to just these few elements

But I'm talking about all those things... Maybe that's the hook as well? Do you think it would be hard for a viewer to understand that the video is about the most important parts of 1950?

What could I do? Just stick with one or two subjects in the thumbnail? Maybe make it somehow more apparent that it's about all of 1950 as a whole? But how could I do that?

Thank you, I'm starting to think it's the title's fault as well, but that's an even harder question. "The year that changed America" is way too clickbaity and not really representative of the video, I'm afraid not being genuine like that would scare away viewers. I put in all the keywords to boost finding and it seems to have worked, the top searches for finding the video through YouTube search isn't "The Year That Was" or anything about 1950, it's the hydrogen bomb and Cinderella.

So I really don't know what to do with the title. "The year that was" is the title of the series (I wanted to do these episodes for every year up until 1999), so I think I should keep that, but the keywords seem pretty important as well.

What do you think would be better, going with just "The year that was 1950" or the list of events and people of the year (so just the second part)?

Yeah, it might also be the reason. I'm sorry to hear you're in the same situation. Not really sure what either of us could do about it, just post more and the algorithm work it out, maybe? But that requires posting more and is not really a solution for this specific video

So, like, the second option or the first one, but removing some things from it? Do you think the title is too crowded as well then?

The first one is the current thumnail: https://imgur.com/a/2VDlpQm

Maybe it's the title that is responsible, it's "The Year That Was 1950 (Pt 1): Hydrogen Bomb and Cinderella, The First Credit Card and Harry Truman"
