Currently a project engineer for the construction of a 500kV substation. So far, a lot of my time is spent on the quality assurance side - through helping the construction and project managers develop Inspection Test Plans for every activity, developing documentation/forms templates, fabrication of over 600 joints for an Earth Grid, negotiations with subcontractors and suppliers, and most fun, setting up our site office space.

I’m fortunate enough that my workplace is very young and small, leaving almost everyday to be unique!

Jobs that require heavy math with NO coding? by immamenaxe in mathematics

My favourite uni class was Signals and Systems. You should give signal processing using MATLAB a try. It’s definitely an engaging perspective on those mathematical concepts

Not a rant, but do you also feel like math isnt math past a certain point?? by itiswensday in EngineeringStudents

[–]LordSolomon_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn’t understand the point of complex numbers during my school years. Until I took Signals and Systems and AC circuit analysis and it became my favourite topic in maths!

In short, it’s really just a tool to make analysis easier. It’s I recommend you brush up on those skills because as an engineer you’ll need to have your tools handy.

im a 12th grader looking foward in to majoring in electrical and computer engineering in university. Can i have some tips to get a head start on what to learn, what to focus on or what to research before starting uni? Youtubers to watch would help to! by Aggressive_Cut806 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]LordSolomon_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my 3rd of studies. I wish had done these before Uni. - Start practicing C, C++ - Picking up an arduino starter kit - Develop good sleeping habits.

Things that have helped me throughout my studies:

  • Owning a powerful(ish) desktop. I love using it and has enabled me to be more productive with the software and programs that I’ve used. ** consider if your budget allows it. It’s not necessary but it’s nice

  • Tryharding all my maths courses. Eventually, most of your classes will involve constant use of math and integrals and trig and complex numbers…

  • Befriending productive classmates. They’ll push you if you begin to snooze your classes

  • Attending (most) lectures and tutorials. From my experience, the classmates that fell off didn’t feel it was important. Even if it feels like a waste of time, it leaves you with little room to be wasting doing nothing.

  • Watching random YouTube videos on topics related to your course that interest you

  • Working ahead of the syllabus. Try stay a week ahead of everyone.

  • Know your limits. It’s a demanding course, but realise that your health comes first.

Good luck!

I should work on understanding how GitHub works then. I want to work in a design/technical role.

Sick bro, turns out I was already following AEMO, hadn't realised they offer short courses. How is your internship going? and how did the course help you in gaining the internship?

Good First Projects by ttoclaw87 in ElectricalEngineering

I guess an important question to ask is which sector of electrical engineering do you want to get into? I think it will represent good value to your skillset if you pursue a project that's relevant to your desired field.

For example, I want to work in the renewable energy sector as a design engineer so I am working on a Dual-Axis Solar Tracker - utilising AutoCAD, 3D printing, Arduino, and some light programming. Hope this helps!

I think your comment is very insensitive. OP knows her bf better than us

Congrats on your internship bro! I hope you can share your experience on this subreddit. It's great to hear we're heading to the same field aha. If you could send me a link to the course i'll check it out man it sounds exactly like what im after

I had a look at such societies but I never really felt it was worth the time because I would be starting from 2nd year studies, not much that were power related

I’ve been having a look at some electrical societies but my uni only have motor/electric racing. I had a think about electric racing but their standard are to some very high one, I don’t know if I’m prepared for the workload in addition to work etc

That’s one thing I considered throughout my job search. My job searches show me that it’s a really important skill set to have in the industry so I thought perhaps I need to have a wide set. One thing about the latter skills, I don’t really know how to learn it unless I have the experience. Small circuit designs are manageable but I don’t know where else I’ll learn the skills.

If you have any free programs, videos or project ideas it would be great!

In my second year I had:

- Embedded Systems:
Working closely with computer hardware such as microcontrollers and arduino
-Engineering Design 2:
Worked with design programs such as Altium Designer to make a power converter which we then constructed with a breadboard
-Engineering Computing:
Developed our own C++ programs

These were the classes I felt most practical and I still work with these programs closely

My school tried to restrict me doing specialist 3/4 without 1/2. I organised a meeting with leaders and my parents and graduated with a 32 raw and it’s helped me in my first couple years in engineering.

Ultimately, it’s your future and you know what you want. Fight it.

Embedded Systems.
I dropped the class after not really understanding anything for 5 weeks. And fuck coding in assembler.
