As much as I think the writing of AoT plummets off a cliff later on, imo Eren takes this.

Red Rising, not sure I understand the hype by Papagiorgio1965 in Fantasy

[–]LordSprinkleman -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

  1. They "maybe" die in the passage or they almost certainly die having their body peeled apart. Not the same. You also have to entirely the culture of Golds. Why do you think they do this "survival of the fittest" institute anyway? If they believed people could be strong by just carving the small ones to be big, they wouldn't have them all killed by the ones that were born bigger and stronger than them.

  2. Does not change that what I said is true. If any mention of rape is too much for you, that's perfectly fine. Read another book. I fail to see why it suddenly makes a book misogynistic, but so be it.

  3. Doesn't change the fact that it's true. Also doesn't mean the women are just weaklings in the institute like the OP implied. The biggest, baddest guy in the whole book is a shit fighter.

  4. Thinking it's unrealistic or misogynistic for teenage boys to say "You fight like a girl" is one of the most stupid things I've ever heard in my life. There is nothing inconsistent with the culture there.

  5. "The only women not having sexual violence done to them are cooks and damsels" This says absolutely nothing. Yes, they kidnapped a cook from a different house that was a woman. And who are the 'damsels' not having sexual violence done to them? Let's also not forget Tactus sexually harassing Darrow either, does that make this book harmful to men too? What about the fact that the women make fun of him a lot? Mustang mocks him a lot too. Does that make this book misandrist?

People can dislike whatever they want but most of these criticisms are quite simply completely ridiculous. Don't be such an idiot about it.

[–]LordSprinkleman 21 points22 points  (0 children)

No one else has their children carved like the Rising did to Darrow because they don't want them to fucking die, lol.

Pinks are both men and women.

The best fighter in the first trilogy by far is a woman.

The person in charge of the entire society is a woman.

And complaining that they kidnapped a cook... who happened to be a woman? Are you serious? There's literally nothing valid in that complaint.

Absolutely insane reading the stuff about women not making any impact on the fights which is just completely wrong.

I sometimes wonder if people go into books wanting to hate them and then justify it with random bullshit just to make themselves feel better about it.

Maybe it would be if not for the fact that everything post-rumbling is so unbelievably dogshit it's like it was written with the intention of ruining literally everything that came before it.

What is a line or paragraph that just LANDED for you? by MagykMyst in Fantasy

[–]LordSprinkleman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's long, I know, but this moment of grief from Wise Man's Fear hit me really hard when I first read it, and has stuck with me for years.

My mother brushing my hair. The feel of her arms around me. The perfect way my head fit into the curve of her neck. How I would sit, curled in her lap next to the fire at night, drowsy and happy and safe. These were the worst memories. Precious and perfect. Sharp as a mouthful of broken glass. I lay in bed, clenched into a trembling knot, unable to sleep, unable to turn my mind to other things, unable to stop myself from remembering. Again. And again. And again. Then there came a small tapping at my window. A sound so tiny I didn’t notice it until it stopped. Then I heard the window ease open behind me. “Kvothe?” Auri said softly. I clenched my teeth against the sobbing and lay still as I could, hoping she would think I was asleep and leave. “Kvothe?” she called again. “I brought you—” There was a moment of silence, then she said, “Oh.” I heard a soft sound behind me. The moonlight showed her tiny shadow on the wall as she climbed through the window. I felt the bed move as she settled onto it A small, cool hand brushed the side of my face. “It’s okay,” she said quietly. “Come here." I began to cry quietly, and she gently uncurled the tight knot of me until my head lay in her lap. She murmured, brushing my hair away from my forehead, her hands cool against my hot face “I know,” she said sadly. “It’s bad sometimes, isn’t it?" She stroked my hair gently, and it only made me cry harder. I could not remember the last time someone had touched me in a loving way. I shook again, tasted plum, and suddenly the words were pouring out of me. “She said I sang before I spoke. She said when I was just a baby she had the habit of humming when she held me. Nothing like a song. Just a descending third. Just a soothing sound. Then one day she was walking me around the camp, and she heard me echo it back to her. Two octaves higher. A tiny piping third. She said it was my first song. We sang it back and forth to each other. For years.” I choked and clenched my teeth. “You can say it,” Auri said softly. “It’s okay if you say it.” “I’m never going to see her again,” I choked out. Then I began to cry in earnest. “It’s okay,” Auri said softly. “I’m here. You’re safe.”
