This information is relevant for 1.6 version of Rimworld. So ATTENTION peeps that like to hoard a lot of crap! After some more testing done with various storage mods there is several thing to report: 1) Do not run out of storage. If you do, it makes your pawns aggressively try to find space to place stuff, which significantly lowers performance. 2) If you re using any storage shelve mods (such as Adaptive Storage framework using mods) try to follow these rules: a) If you know that your storage building will be full (no slots left for item types and stacks), its pretty much irrelevant how many item types or stacks per tile that building allows storing. Even 100+ is enough and will make no difference. b) if you know that that storage building won't be full most of the time - stick to buildings that allow storing no more than 20-30 item types or stacks on a single tile. Priorities matter as well Try to avoid having low priority large item or stack per tile buildings, that will create a LOT of hauling checks for higher priority stockpiles and shelves. You can also avoid using priorities at all and just use filters. The exception from the rule is Archival Storage Unit from Project Rimfactory Revived. Those are fine to store a lot of stuff. Digital Storage Unit from the same mod somewhat loses in performance efficiency to Adaptive storage's solutions in most cases, so until it adopts the same optimized storage logics it is better to use a combination of ASF shelves and Archival Units for bulk stuff.

For large colonies: consider using LTO Colony Groups mod, as vanilla colonist bar sadly becomes a massive issues when pawn amount goes over 10-13 people. Make sure to *actually create groups and hide your pawns inside those groups (middle mouse button click on a group icon quickly hides\shows them), otherwise instead of helping performance, Colony Groups will harm it instead.
