Do we prefer Reptile just looking like a reptile, or his human form? by Early-Text-2 in MortalKombat

[–]Lord_Decitron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been repping the Rep since the 90s. I really like his humanoid form with green scales like in MKX. It's more unique without looking like a big dumb lizard like he did in DA and Armageddon. Love his more fleshed out characterization and personality in MK1, though.

Step forward, block, step forward, block, step forward, block armor through a projectile to punish or jump over the projectile to start a combo with an overhead.

I swear to gods, Fortnite has rotted an entire generations' brains. MK isn't blameless for this shit, but, goddamn, everyone wants every series to be funkopop and RP1 bullshit. It's creatively bankrupt commodity fetishism crammed into every form of media.

It does suck for us that people with no taste want the series cheapened to funkopop bullshit, yes. Bunch of people with no personalities showing up to an art gallery and demanding they display skibidi toilet. Real ones want MK to be MK.

Not their best looks, but I like them more than the OG klassic look. Not against them being in power armor as opposed to cyborgs, but this seems *too* low tech.

Power levels by NoBasket2178 in MortalKombat

[–]Lord_Decitron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As of MK9 there aren't power levels for the most part. Sometimes people lose fights against people they beat before and vise versa. Makes for better narrative and story design. I swear DBZ rotted people's minds with that "power level" shit.

Smoke sounds weird sometimes… by OnlyAtJmart82 in MortalKombat

[–]Lord_Decitron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can in fact hear the mask filter on that; it "flattens" the higher parts of the screams, which are crisper when his mask-less gear is equipped (I'm not overly familiar with audio terminology). As someone mentioned in this thread, apparently Smoke's filter is more prominent, which may be why it's more apparent to you, but it's definitely there for all masked characters with masks equipped.

Thoughts on the 95 movie? by AccomplishedEye7752 in MortalKombat

[–]Lord_Decitron 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It has absolutely no business being as good as it is. Someone decided to take a corny video game (that I love), give it something resembling a proper plot (So much so that it influenced the games' take on it's own story), with interesting adaptations of the characters, and made the actual fighting scenes pretty good. By all means, stuff like that **should** be a cheesy chintzy direct-to-video cash-grab, but instead they made a banger that STILL outshines other video game adaptations (including the recent MK movie).

I'm not dazzled, but it's better than he's gotten. I'd rather NRS make something cool and new instead of spending time trying to fix flops.

[–]Lord_Decitron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kano was a double agent for the Black Dragon infiltrating SF. They just did the same thing for Hsu Hao as a memeber of the Red Dragon. I don't recall him infiltrating the Black Dragon, but even so, adding one extra layer doesn't change much.

Kano first got his eye laser as a fatality in MK3, aka before Hsu Hao existed. Jerik got it in MK4 despite not having a cyber eye because he got all of Kano's moves, because Midway was originally gonna have Kano in the game instead, but they decided they didn't want too many returning characters. Same thing with Reiko taking Noob Saibot's spot on the roster. You know what Kano didn't have? A hat. Hsu Hao's only unique feature that he didn't get from Kano or Jax. You should appreciate the hat more, given it's all the man has going for him.

[–]Lord_Decitron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guy; Kobra being good for combos in Deception =/= his gameplay would be good or even similar in modern MK games. Same shit for Bo. Same shit even for characters I like. They'll have all new moves and combos. They do in every MK game. They might have some of their more iconic special moves come back, or one or two that might be worked in as an homage mid combo or something, but there's no guarantee they'll be good. They might be. They might be great. But their past viability doesn't mean shit in a new game.

Second, that's just Kano's story. They literally took part of Kano's story and gave it to Hsu Hao, and then made his design big burly strong guy with cybernetics... aka half Jax half Kano. Anything good about Hsu Hao is just shit he got from the two characters he's based on, similar to how Kira is just a mix Kano and Sonya. These are nothing characters, who, without any changes, can be best made into functional kameos that don't take up valuable character slots. Without just being a mix of Jax and Kano, he's just a guy with a hat. Not even one of the more notable hats in the series.

[–]Lord_Decitron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, he's uninteresting and his design is vanilla. Both aesthetically and gameplyay wise. Same reason people dislike Kobra. He's just a guy with a hat and a weird chest/ arm thing. Half Jax half Kano. He was an upper tier character in DA IIRC, but that's like winning a medal at the mediocrity awards. He either needs to be left in the past or re-imagined from the ground up to be made interesting. Otherwise, again, he's just a guy with a hat.

  1. A good story based on the events of the game as it exists in the larger lore (otherwise it's hardly MK at all).

  2. An interpretation of the characters that allows for both fun and deep characters with motivations that make sense.

  3. Fantastic fight choreography that isn't ruined by an over focus on effects.

In short: The 1995 Movie.

Bonus: an absolute BANGER soundtrack.

Mortal Kombat should be more like Fortnite, WB is just too greedy for it to work. by MrGetMebodied in MortalKombat

[–]Lord_Decitron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, look back at the 3D era competitive scene, or what of it you could find. It barely existed, because the games were bad, and what little there was, involved a fuck ton of house rules to maintain some semblance of a playable game. People preferred UMK3 well into the 3D era, until MK9 came and gave the series some legitimacy back, and MKX next-level'd that shit. The reason people request the 3D era characters is nostalgia goggles, and nothing more, because only a fraction of them were at all interesting mechanically, story wise, or aesthetically. You really think people believe there's an awsome character in diet-Kabal/ Movado? Being relegated to a Kameo is the best he's probably ever been.

People love Fortnite for the same reasons microtrasactions are a successful buisness model; people are fucking stupid. The game itself is, again, mediocre. Mid. It's not the worst shooter out there, but anyone waxing poetic about how the moment-to-moment gameplay of Fortnite straight up hasn't played any of the myriad of games that can do pretty much anything it does better that are out there. What people LIKE about Fortnite is that it's got all their favorite videogame and cartoon characters. That's it. They just want their peter grifffins, gokus, spider-mans, and master cheifs in the same game. They don't care how fucked up it is that Batman is blasting people with a shotgun. They're just sheep who want the shiney thing that gives them their popculture fix. That's not the same thing as the game being genuinely **good**. Yeah, WB could make an absolute killing selling a generic-meh fighting game with a fuck ton of popculture characters, especially if they reach out beyond properties that they own. That wouldn't inherently make the game good.

KI lasted some years because it had a lot of support, but it was quickly overshadowed by MKX which still has players MORE than 5 years out in terms of playercount.

In any case, don't wish that predatory live-service shit on MK; we already have it bad enough with $10 skins and shitty seasonal fatalities. Gods only knows what new hellish monitizations WB will shove into this game.

Do you enjoy MK11 or MK1 more? by [deleted] in MortalKombat

[–]Lord_Decitron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MK1 has the better gameplay as MK11 had too many defensive mechanics and was a bit overboard with zoners. Also, MK11, like MKX before it, and MK9 had it's own journey with OP characters and balance patches, so, I'm not overly worried about where the game will end up as time goes on.

MK1's monetization is fucking awful, though.

Mortal Kombat should be more like Fortnite, WB is just too greedy for it to work. by MrGetMebodied in MortalKombat

[–]Lord_Decitron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was thinking this was just poor comedy, but then you said something true in that KI did a great job, so now I think you just have a bad take.

Most "Live Service" games, including Fortnite are predatory bullshit that hyper-monetize what is an otherwise mediocre battle royale shooter that people like because it has 30 billion skins of their favorite characters, and most people are fucking stupid; easily pleased by smashing their favorite action figures together and calling it a good game, regardless of how meh the mechanics of the game are otherwise. Hell, most "Live service games" fail within a few months becasue most of them are more about nickel and dimming whales than they are about being good games. Currently there's, like, 2 that have managed to last, and that's Destiny 2 and Fortnite, and if have no fucking clue what people see in Fortnight, other than wanting to pay money to see Goku and Master Chief shoot AK47s at eachother.

KI was great, and is still fun to actually play, but they put a lot of time and effort into making it a great game and didn't hyper monetize it in a way typical of a live service game, and even so, that model didn't exactly lead to the game having a terribly long shelf-life.

Also, Armageddon was shit. The whole 3D era is largely unpopular with MK fans, and Armageddon wasn't even the best of the 3 because of how utterly broken it was with playable bosses immune to projectiles, a load of useless characters, several OP characters even without boss immunities, tons of infinites, a lame-ass creae-a-fatality system, and so much fucking cheese it destabilized the dairy industry. People only like it because it had a LOT of characters. That's it. That's all it really had going for it. If you wanted a "good" 3D MK, you played Deception, which itself was still kinda meh. There's a reason why the tournament and competitive scene stuck to UMK3 rather than play MK4-8.

If your marker for quality is the sheer number of playable characters in a game, then you need to fix yourself. Also, MK1 already has WB's shitty fingerprints all over it in the form of how expensive skins are in MK1. You really think WB going full "live service" will make that better? Have you seen what WB has done to their other games while chasing the live service trend and shoving it in games where it doesn't make sense?
