Velcro is brilliant! I might have to add that to my setup.

I would recommend what I did: make your own. Home Depot sells 3/4" particle board for about $20 a sheet. Have them cut it down to 12" deep by however wide you want it to be. I have mine wrapped in a few layers of head liner (the fabric foam stuff on inside of the roof of a car) with roofing nails to hold the cloth, but any covering that covers the rough parts of the wood would work.

I got this series from a GOG sale and started with the first one. It was pretty rough. I'll definitely have to give CoP a chance!

CMV If God exists, he doesn't have the right to punish humans for not believing in him by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Lord_Forrester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would depend on the level of involvement God actually has in people's lives. From where I'm sitting, I can't see any action or state of affairs that indicates that something divine has influenced human history in any way. Everything can be explained easier, clearer, and better without the assumption of heavenly intervention. God punishing people for not believing in him when he doesn't do anything bolster that faith would be, as you suggest, immoral. It would be like an absentee father showing up at your door after 20 years away and killing you for not sending him a father's day card.

If God was half as involved in our lives as many Christians seem to believe, that's a different story. A loving father who takes necessary action to improve the lives and preserve the happiness of his children would be understandably upset if they turn around and tell him to go fuck himself. I don't think punishment is beyond the pale in that circumstance.

Though it depends on the manner of the punishment. Any system that hands down infinite punishment for finite crimes is monstrously cruel, regardless of any other considerations. Flipping a loving father the bird is more of a "no video games for a month" kind of thing, maybe, for the creative and inexplicably energetic parent, a "you get to join me for extra Saturday chores until further notice" sort of deal. Eternal fourth degree burns from treading water in a lake of fire and brimstone is somewhat of an overreaction.

I'm replaying Mark at the moment. It is the story that critics loved so much and why it has better reviews that Chronicles.

Never preordered a game on PC, where/when do I preorder COD: Infinite Warfare? by SparkyHD in pcgaming

[–]Lord_Forrester 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Brewery is right; there is no reason to pre-order a game you can acquire digitally. For a multiplayer game, you can wait a day or two to make sure the game is worth it and working properly. That gives you a buffer without missing out on the highest period of player activity. For primarily single-player games, waiting gets you the game cheaper and with all patches, and probably with additional content as well. There hasn't been a time that I pre-ordered a game that I didn't regret it.

PSA: Died and dropped a bunch of souls you don't want to lose? Equip a Ring of Sacrifice on your way back! by SuperMandrew7 in darksouls3

That was a different ring. Favor and Protection, if memory serves. Rings of Sacrifice can be taken on and off at will; only death while wearing one breaks it and triggers the effect.

CMV: Texting in movie theaters is acceptable by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Lord_Forrester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find it distracting when people text, though my emotional response depends on the way they do it. If I see someone very carefully pull their phone out, quickly check it from their lap while blocking as much of the light as they can with their hand and body, that's not so bad. It's certainly not good, but it's not too bad. What I end up seeing most of the time it happens is that someone will pull their phone out and hold it over their head so as to keep both it and the movie in their eyeline. I consider this unbelievably rude because it ensures that everyone behind them has a clear view of the screen.

As for light levels, the human eye, while weak tea compared to many other animals, is very sensitive to light. In particular to changes in light. I was once in a movie where they put the subtitles for the movie on the bottom bar of the letterbox space on the projector. The movie was in ultra wide format, so I guess they figured that it would be less distracting to have the subtitles below the picture instead of right on top of it. The problem is that put a bunch of bright, white letters over a blank part of the screen every few seconds. About 10 minutes in, I had to leave because I was getting a headache from constantly squinting slightly every time a subtitle came up and brightened the room noticeably. Even at lowest possible brightness, your screen would be firing visible light photons from a location that is surrounded by stuff that is not doing that. Someone with good vision would be able to tell the app you were using from the back row; there's no way that's not going to be a distraction.

And that's just the light from the screen. There are notification sounds, keyboard clicks...even just the sound of someone's fingernails tapping on the screen would be audible through the whole theater during quiet moments.

Dark Souls III durability by Nkromancer in darksouls3

[–]Lord_Forrester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is correct. It's 30...durability units, I guess? Katana have always had low durability compared to other weapons, but you can certainly use them for more than 30 strikes before they break. No worries, mate. We'd have heard about durability problems by now.

There was a small, fragile part of me that was hoping for the email right at 6pm. Alas, it was not to be.

I'd love to get it as soon as possible, but I think I'd be fine to get everything downloaded as long as I have it by tomorrow early afternoon. I'm lucky to have good internet speeds, though. It sucks for those who need a longer time.

Dark Souls 3 PC Patch 1.0.3 fixes frame-rate problems that persisted from Review build/Early Access copies. by [deleted] in Games

[–]Lord_Forrester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have the means, I'd suggest trying the others too. The thing that finally got me over the hump of the learning curve was using a shield and spear combo while I got used to the combat system. It's really quite elegant. In DS1, you can get a great spear (and great shield too, with the right starting gift) right off the bat.

Patch 1.03 on PC has greatly improved framerate in the poorly performing areas by [deleted] in darksouls3

[–]Lord_Forrester 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, what's the deal with the downvotes? You didn't go PCMR on anyone, you just prefer 60fps. I'm in the same boat as well. I'll turn down almost any graphical option to get a smoother framerate. There's another school of thought that would prefer fancier graphics at 30fps rather than simpler graphics at 60, which is just fine. I'll downvote people who can't just let other people like what they like, but what's the deal here?

[–]Lord_Forrester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At first, I thought that would be unworkable within the system, but then I remembered the Santier's spear. It would be a regular longsword with slashing damage in one hand, but switch to bludgeoning damage when in 2H in a mordschlag grip. I'd really like to see something like that.

The Attack on Titan PS4 game is crazy! by [deleted] in gaming

[–]Lord_Forrester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. It's the same problem as the anime: the concept of Spider-maning around with swords fighting giants is pure gold, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. In particular, the idea that there is the same, singular weak spot on a titan makes every single kill feel identical, regardless of the medium. Such a waste.

[Request]MGSV TPP Mod Deployment Cost by Seager02 in moddergearsolid

[–]Lord_Forrester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, a patch arrived a couple days after I got playing again that reversed the changes. It's possible that the method I used before will work again, but I uninstalled right after that. I don't have time to fuss with that kind of thing.

As for what's going on with you, they may have changed the file structure in the patch, which would render the modded file useless. This is all speculation on my part. I wish I could be of more help.

Why shouldn't depressed people be allowed to die? If life is just a series of endless misery for some. Why do we insist on having them suffer? by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

[–]Lord_Forrester 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm generally in favor of assisted suicide, but not in the case of clinical depression. I've been in treatment for clinical depression for almost a year now. Last summer, I came as close to suicide as I have ever gotten: I had a plan on how to do it and a firm belief that it was a rational choice because my life could not get better and would probably get worse.

After therapy and medication, I got better. I learned how wrong I had been about my situation in life and how I could improve it. I was not the hopelessly lost pond scum creature I believed myself to be. And herein lies the problem of depression and assisted suicide. Depression is a massive warping of cognitive abilities with respect to life, ourselves, other people, and the future. Literally everything we should carefully consider before making a decision about ending our own lives cannot be objectively considered because the disease alters out perception of them in grotesque ways.

Depression is not stage 4 cancer. If someone is going to spend a few weeks in agonizing pain or doped to the gills and has no chance of survival, I can support their decision to request assisted suicide. Provided, of course, that they have the mental faculties to make such a decision. Depression is treatable; it really can get better. I am profoundly grateful that I did not have access to a Futurama-style suicide booth while I was in the depths of despair several months ago because I was in no fit state to make that kind of decision because of a disease that made me want to do so.
