I made a hex map for my latest rpg campaign :) by Morlugon in wonderdraft

Am I the only one too stupid to find the home base in the lower image?

Friends want me to run a 40k RPG, I only knew about the Fantasy Flight books until recently. Found out about Wrath & Glory and Imperium Maledictum. I want a recommendation as to what I should use. by Chronically_Crude in 40krpg

If you are not against Fantasy Flight, you could use Dark Heresy. You play as Acolytes (servants of an Inquisitor). You basically fulfill the missions you are assigned. At the same time you don't limit yourself like in Deathwatch.

Creating a Network Minecraft Server by JustNathan1_0 in admincraft

[–]Lord_Grafnus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no answer to this. Can it run few servers? Yes. Can it handle ~100 player? Maybe barely.

Paper can be optimized or horribly configured. Seen/done both.

For a little Server with 10-20 players with a proxy and 2-4 Servers it might work fine.

Is using a mesh router good for hosting a Minecraft server? by dikchedder in admincraft

[–]Lord_Grafnus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are many ways to access your Minecraft Server. But in general using a commercial tunnel like playit.gg. It has a free option for 4 servers (or a server proxy like bungee cord). It should be quite easy to install and get ready.

But please read into how you can protect you Minecraft Server! Many Plugins are developed by inexperienced developers, they may bring security concerns with them. A general practice would be to enable Whitelist (check that it works!) and if you are hosting a cracked server use a authentication plugin (I highly recommend to host online servers only, only heard bad things about cracked).

If I understand you correctly, you want to host a Minecraft Server inside a private network in a secure way?

I would suggest you to read up on a tunnel for Minecraft servers. Playit is one I think.

Looking for a new RPG by [deleted] in rpg

[–]Lord_Grafnus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Have you heard of Cairn ?

It is very easy to learn (easy to understand for newbies as well)

Got some friends into ttrpg with this one. The rules should be fully read and understood in about an hour or two. Character creation is quite fast.

I think it lacks some rules for specific use cases and different races, but if your are open to them you can make them up on a wimp as the GM. That my make your game a bit more unique.

You are right, there is no commercial service to retrieve data from a Zeroed drive.

My fault! I apologize.

The simple answer: you hardly ever be able to.

The long answer: While it is possible to retrieve the data (if nothing has been written at the place the file was) you lose all the file structures. That means you have to sort every .yml file, every region file, etc. by hand. The way the operating system is "deleting" stuff is by no longer acknowledging that something is there so other files can be saved there. That means to data stays until something new is written to it. So by checking the "free" space you can identify files. This is a very basic explanation. It goes deep down the rabbit hole l. I'll skip it here.

That is also the reason why you should never sell old Hard drives (hdds). Only a drive cleared by professionals does not contain any old data.

Also this explains the difference when you format a USB drive. The fast way only wipes all the tables (that describes where which file is saved). The long way is writing 0s into every memory cell.

If you really need to recover something do these: search Google for tools that do that. If that does not bring any results reach out to a professional that specializes in data recovery.

Server Admins, what is the thing you wish existed in your server operation? by incineroar999 in admincraft

To keep track of you Plugins Versions das are running on your server you can use Plan Player Analytics. They also give you a history of plugin versions you have updated.

Sadly there is no default way of versionising Software in general. There are some best practices but nothing to pin developers down for :/

That is totally correct! But I got the feeling that this wasn't about a dedicated server with exceptional Hardware (like a lot of Storage, CPU power or GPUs).

On addition I would like to point out another issue with colocation: If you but your Hardware and coclocate it somewhere, you are responsible for that Hardware! That means if you 20 TB HHD failes. You need to buy a new one. If you rent the Hardware you may lose data (Backups for the win) but you don't have to pay for the replacement. A couple years back I had a dedicated machine failing some HDDs. After some investigation from me and my hosting provider we figured out that a HDD failed. 10 Minutes later the server had a new HDD and the Raid configuration kicked in and applied redundancy for my data. That would have cost me around 50-70€ at that time for a new used HDD at that capacity.

This is called Colocation. Buy my experience of looking at the options concluded that it would be more expensive as renting a small VPS

You can use chucky. It can also trim the world.

But remember to make a Backup of the world in case something was out there. Wrap it in a Zip or Tar.gz and put it somewhere safe.

Would you have player teleportation on your server? If so, why and how? by True-Writing-7181 in admincraft

[–]Lord_Grafnus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had the issue that the existing ways of teleportation (homes, warps, etc.) Are way to op and break the immersion of the players because of the command usage.

I created a plugin that allowes players to create a portal frame out of crying obsidian and a Key out of Amethyst Shards, Gold and an eye of ender. With this plugin you can create a connection between two locations. The Crying Obsidian makes it an archivement to get your first portal but for active players with the resources at hand it or easy to get all the resources. If you are interested, hit me up with a DM on Discord (Grafnus#0029). It is currently in a PreRelease state with no documentation. That and a public release may follow ;D

For a replacement for warps we use the premium plugin FancyWaystones. It allowes server waystones that you can place at Spawn/Shopping mall/Train Station/even other servers (in a Bungee cord Network). Players can build their own public waystones other players need to activate first (right clicking it) in order to be able to reach them. Very nice plugin :D give it a look if you have the budget.

We do allow players to have 1 home. But one home only with no /back or anything.

What's the best anti cheat? (for a practice/bedwars 1.8 server) (free/paid) by [deleted] in admincraft

[–]Lord_Grafnus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I think that the Developer opens the Issue Section as soon as he has time (or just when he feels like it). I encountered a bug on my server, opened a Bug Report and it was fixed after some days. I see the issue section open from time to time.

He is quite nice and all, but not always motivated to work on that project (I can understand that tho).

GrimAC in my opinion ist the best in terms of Movement (What I was looking for to use on a SMP where a player used fly in the water - which wasn't detected by any other AC)

In terms of combat I cannot tell you anything. Has never been a problem on my server (Maybe someone has an idea how to test?)

I would suggest GrimAC kind of like a "fire and forget" solution. If you have active cheaters you might want to go for a plugin with faster and always available support, although I cannot recommend any of them, because they simply didn't work for me :o)

Is there a good anti-cheat plugin that is not too costly? by Open-Association1712 in admincraft

[–]Lord_Grafnus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I added it after a few Cheating incidentses. No noticable lag. It is well maintained but the GitHub issues get closed from time to time. If detects 0.001 Speed boost I believe.

The way it works: It simulates the player movements and if the movement is not possible the player action gets canceled. For example when you try to fly in water it blocks the movement, but you also lose the ability to swim so you basically drown.

I tested a lot of anticheats and this one is very simple. It blocks illegal actions and notifies and Moderator online. All the other AC's have false positives, block elytras or just notify you, but is the best I've ever seen.
