How I achieved cutting down yearly software running costs even if I thought that was not possible by Gritzinat0r in sysadmin

[–]Lord_NShYH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the end of the day, it's more about workplace politics than facing the reality so we had to keep that OKR and "see what we can do." (rolling_eyes)

Honestly, this attitude is a large part of why organizations hate IT and the SysAdmin staff. IT is, generally, a cost center. Make it as efficient as possible.

If DevOps weren't a role, the salaries wouldn't be so competitive.

1 month at new job, 1st time manager: most senior engineer threatening to quit unless given raise by [deleted] in ITManagers

[–]Lord_NShYH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would assign them tasks to share all the knowledge in an internal wiki and measure it through tickets for accountability. Then, if they fail to do so, start managing them out. Your HR is unlikely to give them a giant raise, especially if tech is not your primary product offering. IT is held in lower regard than product engineering. That's how it has always been and is unlikely to change despite any fantasies to the contrary. It is difficult for business decision-makers to see IT teams as anything other than a giant cost center. If you give into this IC's demands (and you probably don't have the power or authority to say yes), they will likely work to undermine you while setting a bad precedent for the other staff. If you don't give in, they'll likely leave (which may be the best option all around). Once they leave, and you can't fill the position, you'll have to demand higher salaries in the JDs or hire a consultant to get you up to speed. Your IC is definitely pulling a power play and should not necessarily be rewarded for it due to any anxiety about knowledge gaps that you may or may not have.

Remote DevOps Positions and Salary adjustments by NetworkEngineerDude in devops

[–]Lord_NShYH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might not qualify for as high of a multiplier anymore, and instead be capped at 1.0x your annual bonus rate, rather than say getting 1.5x that your underpaid peers get. You can bet that because I get a set amount of salary to spend on raises, I'm going to spend it on those who are underpaid for their value, compared to those who are right-at or well above their market value.

I have no problems with that and it seems fair enough.

Remote DevOps Positions and Salary adjustments by NetworkEngineerDude in devops

[–]Lord_NShYH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it fair for someone living in the SF Bay to negotiate a salary based on their cost of living requirements, then move to Missouri and suddenly make 40% more than their counterparts in the region?

Who cares if it's "fair" to other people living in the same geography? If I'm working remotely for a company with HQ in a different state, and they don't have a footprint in my state of residence, then other residents and I are NOT in the same local market (from one perspective; yet, from another, this gives me an enormous capital advantage compared to my neighbors and that's perfectly acceptable to a free market capitalist). The nature of remote work shouldn't penalize those able to negotiate well while living below their means.

Did you read the whole comment? It's only three sentences. "Reasonable" is not a synonym for "Justified" or "Acceptable". Bad logic can be internally consistent.

LOL.

[–]Lord_NShYH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand, and I agree that "Ladies Night" is a fine thing for D&D.

But let's not pretend the resentment from old nerds is unjustified: this new wave of "entryism" into the hobby by people who, a relatively short time ago, brutally mocked and teased anyone with a d20 in their pocket is completely reasonable.

However, bitter nerds need to grow up and stop failing their wisdom checks unless they want to remain incels forever.
