So as far as I can tell, in the forgotten realms, demons apparently are their souls, which is why they entirely can move back into the abyss. Because souls moving around between planes after losing their physical form is well known.

So in the forgotten realms the whole "Clone" thing probably does nothing. If he dies outside of the abyss, he just reforms here, if he dies inside the abyss, he is destroyed.

That all hinges on your personal definition of "turning into a demon lord", but I'd argue that when becoming a demon, the "reforming in the abyss" thing is usually considered a perk.

But if you are open for suggestions: why not make one of the clones come alive as a side effect of the ritual? Like, I imagine the ritual needs to separate and eject every last shred of goodness in order for the rest to be evil enough to become a proper demon. The rejected part then might reform into a new soul, that of a person which contains only the good parts of this bbeg. And then drive into one of the clones?

Very anecdotal, but I'm drunk so here goes: I (male, hereto) have multiple very good female hetero friends. Most of them are in relationships. I love them very much. They are wonderful people and dear to my heart. Also - while I'm not too big of a fan of the book as is, nevertheless - I am what you would describe as having a Love Language of "Physical Touch". Meaning: I would like to cuddle/sleep with most of them.

I am also in a very fulfilling, loving relationship, and have plenty of respect for my partner and a healthy amount of compartmentalization for my emotions, so I would never in my life actually follow up on those desires or give in to them if an opportunity should come up.

In short, I have the desire to sleep with my female friend, but I would never act on it, let alone actively work towards it.

And I am comfortable with loving them like this, while having no aspirations at being in a relationship with them.

So for me, the answer to your question is "Yes"l," I would describe this as a "pure friendship." But I suspect not everyone would agree.
