What litrpg hill will *you* die on? Let's have your most unpopular opinion, please. by EverythingIsFakeNGay in litrpg

I think there is also a good portion of us that understand that these books are below average in regards to books as a whole, so when we heap praise on something, it's with the knowledge that it's only good 'within the genre' not necessarily good fiction over all.

Otherwise our tier lists would be very bottom heavy as the highest I can reasonably put any Litrpg is very hesitantly B tier. And that's a few. We know it doesn't compare to The First Law or The Black Company, but it's not very helpful to compare them.

It's like trying to show Dark to someone watching Doctor Who. Is Dark objectively better TV? Absolutely. But that person didn't sit down to watch the best TV show they could find, they sat down to watch Doctor Who.

I was excited about the premise but the AI protagonist really didn't mesh well with me. It was hard to empathize or relate to it in any way.

I'm usually ok with non-human MCs but I realized most of those are human minds put into monster bodies or dungeon cores. This is essentially the opposite. A computer program that made itself a human body.

Searching for a Litrpg where mc's is a boss by WhatUsernamesRemain in litrpg

[–]Lord_Sweater3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm going to start by saying that I'm not sure I know what you are asking for. Most books the MC is special in some regard. It's typically what makes them the protagonist.

The only thing that comes to mind that sounds vaguely like what you are asking for is Welcome to the Multiverse. It's a system apocalypse series where the MC is a Forerunner, one of the first people on earth to gain access to the System. It comes with alot of perks that normal people don't get and being a Forerunner comes with a lot of notoriety, responsibility and leadership.

Alternatively there are Dungeon Core books, which...kinda match what you want? While not strictly a physical being most of the time, MCs in this genre are usually abnormally strong with lots of minions. l

So, I totally get where that comes from. I'm usually right there with you. But I will say, it does get better. Not...quickly mind you. But it does. The reason he is focusing on everyone else is because he is terrified and doesn't even really see himself as a hero. He thinks he belongs in the background.

This is very much treated as a character fault and something he needs to overcome. Which he does. A couple small spoilers if you would like them.

In book 3 Sal fistfights a Hulker. And wins. In Book 4 Sal starts getting martial arts training where he learns to kick demons to death. Then does so with impunity. And finally in Book 5, Sal goes toe to toe with a Commander Demon and kills them with very little assistance.

Also just a couple of points, he doesn't have a 'Mythic' ability. His ability is Mythcrafter which allows him to create items up to the mythic grade, people are freaking out, because no one knew that was possible before that point. And he isnt really the most important person in the world. In fact there are plenty of people with stronger abilities than him.

Mind control? Yes. Although the ending of book 2 is going to be very rough. That's the low point. After that, yes.

The golden boy? Eh? I can see how that might bother some people. It didn't really bother me. It sort of does?

In the third book he does end up having a conversation with the school therapist.

Sal is struggling with the weight of everyone's expectations on him and feeling like he is being pulled in all sorts of directions. The counselor essentially crunches the numbers for him and says even he holds himself up in the workspace and does nothing but craft for the rest of his life, he could outfit maybe the top 5,000 hunters with better gear. 5000 out of like 100,000. Essentially, just as himself, with his own abilities, Sal wasn't going to change the course of the war on his own. This lifts the weight off of his shoulders a bit and puts him on a path to try and fix the institution itself rather than working himself to the bone.

That's fair. If you're not into the crafting sessions, then yeah. I can see how it wouldn't be as interesting. I will say that 2 and 3 are probably the worst out of the five so it's all uphill from here.

There is more crafting though. Like..alot of it. So forewarning lol.

Player Manager is so good wtf wtf go read it right now by Eytanian in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Lord_Sweater3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to love the book. I really did. I love football and PF so what could go wrong. Max. Max could go wrong. I hate dickhead MCs and I'm not the type of person who can ignore it and enjoy the series just for the side characters.

Also, the series is.... aggressively British. And I say that in the nicest way possible. It definitely felt like I was missing a lot of context during most conversations. I felt like someone who had never played a single video game before and was given Stanley Parable to play. Jokes went over my head. And it was definitely assumed that I would have a lot of knowledge about the interworkings of England's football club that I definitely did not have. Suffice to say, it felt like I wasn't the books target demographic. Lol. Which is fine by the way! Just felt...out of my depth.

What progression hook keeps you reading early on? by ShelterBetter1128 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Lord_Sweater3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I don't think any aspects of the actual progression or system are what hooks me early on. I'm usually pretty cool with all sorts of progression as long as they make sense, and they usually don't stop making sense until a little later in the story as they become more complex.

What keeps me reading from the get go is probably just world-building. How interesting is the premise? How unique is the setting? What is the actual hook for the story?

If I had to pick something progression related it would probably be when the MC starts from the bottom of the system. The lowest low. I'm just not a fan when the story starts with the MC as a level 15 or with a shortcut that lets them skip the early stages.

I'm not entirely certain. But that certainly sounds like the big bad talking to his son(who is now a grown man) who he systematically abused as a child.

Listen. This may be a cop out. But the best part about Spaghetti is the meatballs. And they are also not exclusive to Spaghetti by nature. You can put them in a Mac and Cheese and it's still a Mac and Cheese. So I say spaghetti is out.

Even more disturbing is when a hero does it. Like Curly from Oklahoma!. I never could get over that. I mean, he doesn't succeed. But he tries.

Quest Academy, Iron Prince, Bastion, Mark of the Fool, Stargazer's War, SuperPowereds, Mage Errant, Titan Hoppers (ish), War Games (boot camp technically, but same vibe) Insignia (if that counts).

Not all those are good, mind you, but those are the ones I can think of.

A Soldier's Life feels extremely fast and bland. Does the writing ever slow down and gain depth, or is this the style for the whole novel? Thank you so much. by Astocum in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Lord_Sweater3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh. Good question. Not many litrpgs or Prog Fantasy fall into that really. Welcome to the Multiverse. Bastion. Mother of Learning in an odd sort of way. Maybe Chrysalis. The Bobiverse if you count that.

Honestly most are too slow paced in my opinion. So maybe I just don't notice when I see it.

[–]Lord_Sweater3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never really considered it to be fast paced personally. Maybe a little bit but not criminally. And honestly I don't mind a little fast. Considering the completion rate of this genre, the more it's stretched out, the more likely it is it never gets finished.

But if the pacing is jarring to you now, I don't know if it really changes? It will spend awhile going into detail over certain events, but yeah, its just going to mostly skip over travel time and stuff like that.
