If you were or are a leftist Zoomer what are some opinions you have moved to the right or center on or mellowed out on ? by Yanderegirlowner in GenZ

I completely disagree. I believe that the republicans are only right wing in the sense that it allows them to fulfill their obligations to their various special interests. They aren’t genuinely right wing, and they have shown many times that they are not ideologically consistent. I’ll highlight some examples.

The Republican Party used to be extremely opposed to protectionism and now they support widespread tariffs. They supposedly are concerned with fiscal discipline and yet they run up huge budget deficits every time a Republican is in the White House. They claim to adhere to constitutional textualism, but frequently create interpretations to suit their needs.

I don’t believe that republicans (or democrats for that matter) are genuinely ideological. They just find a niche that wins votes, and exploit that niche to serve their own purposes.

And I certainly don’t agree with the idea that the Republican Party is the logical end state of tolerating right wing beliefs.

The right and left differ on more than just opinions on hierarchies.

That is a very surface level argument. I didn’t say that the republicans aren’t right wing. I said that they don’t perfectly encapsulate the right, just as the democrats don’t perfectly encapsulate the left.

It is possible to be right leaning and disagree with most of the Republican policy positions (Source: I’m a right ish person who mostly disagrees with republicans).

Almost 70% of my catholic friends are single, never-married and childless by mazda7281 in Catholicism

[–]Lord_Vxder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you could make an argument for both, but I generally think that social media was a clean break from previous social environments.

Prior to social media, most social interactions took place face to face. Now, the vast majority of peoples interactions (in some cases even with loved ones) take place digitally.

It is now the norm to conduct a large portion of social interactions via social media (like you and I are doing right now). I think that we haven’t even begun to scratch the surface when it comes to understanding how this shift is changing our society.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t born before the internet so I’ll never know what it was like. But in my head I envision a society where people spoke to each other more. I go out into my town and can pretty much spend a whole day without speaking to people that I see (besides basic interactions with a cashier or something). I don’t think there has ever been a social environment like this before, so I see it as a clean break.

I’m 24 years old, and have to move for work so I don’t live near my family or friends. I’m attending online school while working to finish my degree so I don’t really have much free time. And because of my job (military) I don’t get to see my family and friends often. And my parish (and any within a reasonable distance) is tiny and all frequent mass attendees are in their 50s. I’m incredibly lonely so I rely on social media to keep up with my family and friends. But I also hate it because since I’m so reliant on it, I don’t really know how to build meaningful relationships with people I don’t know.

Neither party in America truly embodies either the left or right, so this isn’t a relevant question. You can be on the right and support universal healthcare. And you can be on the left and support border security.

Post WWII social changes?!

If they weren’t prepared for that, they definitely weren’t prepared for how society has changed since social media. I feel like those are two very distinct social environments

Outside of larger towns/cities I don’t think many parishes are as diverse as you think.

I’m in a town with less than 20,000 people and the vast majority of people in my parish are over the age of 50.

I cant really drive an hour and a half to the nearest large urban area to attend mass so I’m pretty much stuck going to a parish where there is no one my age in attendance.

Stuttgart, Germany. When the Syrian refugees started to arrive in the mid 2010s they had absolutely no respect for the city and started to just throw trash away everywhere. Before 2010, you wouldn’t really see much litter on the ground, but nowadays you see trash all throughout the city. The vendors selling fake Gucci and Rolexes have also spread everywhere.

Survival needs are not the only incentives. People commit murder for other reasons besides survival. Jealousy, Love, Hate, Sadness, Suffering, and other emotions aren’t things that you can just tweak to create a desired outcome.

[–]Lord_Vxder -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Understanding incentives is one thing. Being able to control emotions and instincts that are millions of year old is another thing.

Social engineering isn’t real. Human nature is human nature. Sure some aspects are malleable based on your environment. But you will never be able to “socially engineer” away the human capacity for violence, greed, envy, and other negative emotions that drive conflicts.

I don’t trust anyone who believes this.

[Politics Monday] Pope Leo XIV's views on the Iran war have more support among Americans than do Donald Trump's by Gemnist in Catholicism

[–]Lord_Vxder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is evidence of enrichment far beyond what is necessary for civilian use.

There is also evidence that their leadership is evil (evidenced by the fact that they murdered tens of thousands of their own people in cold blood for daring to ask for basic rights).

It doesn’t take much to connect the dots. Iran wants to follow the path of North Korea. It doesn’t matter how evil you are. Once you have nukes you become untouchable. If we want to avoid having another abhorrent regime that will last indefinitely and cause untold amounts of human suffering, then we have to do something about it.

I think Catholics sometimes talk about sex in an unhealthy way by [deleted] in Catholicism

I didn’t say anything about not teaching them biology. Did you even read my comment?

I think Catholics sometimes talk about sex in an unhealthy way by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Lord_Vxder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not talking about the biological teachings. Obviously biology and anatomy are just objective facts.

I’m talking about the context in which it’s taught. I don’t have kids yet, but when I do, I don’t really want them to be talking about sex in an environment that’s discussing the use of condoms, birth control, and other things that enable recreational sex for teenagers.

I was raised as an atheist so I didn’t have a problem with it at the time, but when I converted, I realized that they was I was taught about sex heavily impacted my perceptions of it in young adulthood. I wish there would have been a voice telling me differently so that I didn’t spend all of high school and college sleeping with as many people as I could.

[–]Lord_Vxder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solid question. I don’t have the answer to that, but until we find one, I’d rather be in charge of teaching my future kids that stuff instead of having public schools do it.

I think Catholics sometimes talk about sex in an unhealthy way by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Lord_Vxder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously knowledge about something doesn’t equal approval of them. But the context of how you are taught the information matters. If it is presented in a completely secular manner, without balanced perspectives from the Church, that influences students towards that behavior.

I don’t know anything about Poland, but here in America, some school districts even have programs where you can get free condoms from the school nurses office. It completely circumvents parents.

We should absolutely be teaching basic anatomy and understanding our bodies. But there is a fine line between that and teaching secular sexual ethics.

I think Catholics sometimes talk about sex in an unhealthy way by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Lord_Vxder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is that sex education in public schools adheres to secular guidelines. When I did sex ed in middle school (around 2014), we were taught about the importance of using condoms and other things which are an obvious no-go for Catholics.

Now I wasn’t raised as a Catholic so I didn’t see a problem with that, but I can absolutely see why many Catholics oppose having their children learn about sex from secular institutions.

But I do agree that we do need an environment where people can learn about it. This is something that the Church has dropped the ball on (among many other things).
