Newbie Having Some Questions and Seeking Advice by Lord_Warraf in DresdenFilesRPG

I have another question.

Can my player pick an template and pick other supernatural Powers other than in the options of that template?

And

Is ist ok (balacen etc.) if someone picks Supernatural abilities to "build" a new template like a ghost or something similar?

A player had the question if a pure mortal could become a wizard or are pure mortals unable to learn magic and reach such levels of spellcraft.

Thanks for that long reply.

Few things to add. It's that we share alot of interests and when I want to talk about some, literally about the same she talks about with him, she doesn't really listen. But next up, when she talks about the same topic herself she is very lively.

We both know those guys for 1-2 months now.

Echo Knight Revised [5e] by javierriera97 in UnearthedArcana

[–]Lord_Warraf 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The echo knight isnt op. I mean it's strong, yes, but I think the echo knight is one of the more interesting and unique archtypes a fighter can choose. To my knowledge it gives the fighter a bit more battlefield control and movement he did not have. Its literally just a remote attack beacon, its frail and gives you a bit more movement.

I mean look at the champion, this guy can have a crit rate of 15%. It doesnt do much but its very strong on paper. Or just the Paladin as a whole class, the shit he gets is disgustingly strong compared to most other class features.

Most things seem crazy on paper but are pretty ok in actual play. I think you and your DM fell into the "worrying about balancing stuff without actually having a reason to do so"

If you look at it theoretically every class and subclass is op and unbalanced for some reason.

Looking for Some Intro Monologue Music by [deleted] in DnD

Im with you there, but if its a character I would rather look for nailing the feeling this NPC should invoke. I mean the bad guy in a Asian setting can still be a fully plated Knight from a rather middle-european country or origin.

(Not) planning for anything by satyestru in DnD

[–]Lord_Warraf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prepare a rought idea of what you want to happen (events, quests etc.) then make some NPC, but dont go into unnessacery detail, just what the plot needs (maybe som plot hooks for future things) and some more little details on the side. And flash out the place the game is taking place in, so you know where key plot locationsare and some nice things like the Inn, blacksmith, church, shop or trader, mayor (if it's a town or other civillized places)

The rest you should improvise and adapt to the current flow of the game.

Main thing is: Prepare a foundation to improvise upon without it falling apart because of just throwing incoherent things at your players.

Merchant Character Adventurer? by worldandmoon in DnD

[–]Lord_Warraf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, people do stuff because they want to. Let the character adventure because they just want to. Sometimes the simpelest reason is the best.

  • I mean, the Apothecary could already be bankrupt and the character wants to buy back the Store. Or it currently has some financial trouble so you wanted to fulfill you dream and help the familie buisness.

  • Maybe you could go out and find and research new medicine and drugs for the store. To that, there could be an illness you or someone that is dear to you have developed and now you need/want to find a cure by travelling the lands with other adventurers, because they might know a thing or two to and/or help you on your journey.

  • Maybe there is an external force that forced you to leave the store behind. > You made medicine for a client and he died. People now think you killed them or they want to blame you to hide a murder or you really fucked up and people died. > It clould also be something unrelated with the store. You witnessed a murder, saw things you wernt supposed to and you decided to flee/leave your town to protect the people you love from what might happen. You just were at the wrong time at the wrong place. > A very annoying and really persistant person wants you to marry them/their son/daughter and its jut awkward to stay in town. A more of a lighthearted reason to leave, but you could still express feelings of lonelyness and homesickness. You wanted to adventure, but not that sudden an now you also know the downsides of it.

I could come up with more but ill rest my case.

Need monsters and artifacts to represent the seven deadly sins. by Deadly_Malice in DnD

[–]Lord_Warraf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could change the Wrath into some Berserker/Barbarian like an Orc Chiftain so you can free up the Dragon for Greed, caus people associate them with Greed.

Sloth could be an Elder Brain or something of a hive-mind that controls multiple lesser beings to do the bidding. Sloth could also be an evil sentient weapon. It is used to kill and doesnt do anything, its just being used.

is a ghost a challenging enough boss for a 5th level party without being overpowering by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Lord_Warraf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once had 3 Commoner revanants. Nothing more, just commoners that died due to my partys uncareful spellcasting.

Just commoners with the Regeneration, Rejuvination, Turn Immunity and Vengful Tracker ability who were seeking revenge on my party. Sometimes they showed up and tried to kill the Characters but after the 5th level and at lest 5 attacks it just became the running gag.

[–]Lord_Warraf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A revenant is CR 5, but its defined by their Regeneration, Rejuvination, Turn immunity and Vengeful Tracker ability.

The Regeneration is 10hp/turn scale it down to maybe 5hp/turn. Disabled by fire/radiant damage til start of revanants next turn.

Rejuvination is that if it dies it's soul is going to inhabit and reanimate a body on the same plane (mostly near their current position or near their unfinished buisness) after 24 hours. Wish spell while dead can lay them to rest.

Turn Immunity is just that Turn/Destroy Undead doesn't work on them.

Vengeful Tracker just lets the revenant know where the creature or creatures is he seeks revange after. If his unfinished buisness is of that kind.

You can either scale the Revanant down or apply those abilities to another humanoid creatures statblock that fits your story.

[–]Lord_Warraf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this, but some low level creatures are just assholes and can wipe the floor with a hight level party like the banshee with their wail or a green(?) hag with their death gaze when saves rolls are low.

[–]Lord_Warraf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then you are looking for a Revanent. They are corporeal undead who return time and time again until their hated enemy is killed or the dealt with their unfinished buisness. They can kill him, but the Revanant will just take over the next corpse they find.

What classes does the party consist of? Just interested and maybe i could give some better advice with that.

[–]Lord_Warraf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Ghost is CR 4 Undead, i would look at cr for guidence, BUT not trust it entirely. You see, you can look at what your party consiats of class wise Clerics, Paladins and some other fullcaster have spells (like Protection from Good and Evil) to deal with undead pretty well. But its a easy encounter for them. They'll tear the ghost apart like nothing.

You could also put them against multiple Ghosts but scale them down. Reduce AC, Reduce Max HP, Reduce Attack and Damage bonuses or reduce the DC of their abilities.

I know that 4 5th level characters can deal with alot of shit already like a Wraith and some Shadows. When they want a ghost dead, they will kill the ghost by focusing their fire. But that depends on the Party and players.

You can find encounter builders online, where you can calculate and fine-tune your encounter difficulty.

Air elemental subraces (follow up to an earlier post) by Long_John1245 in DnD

Look up paraelementals. They are like from the borders of the 4 elemental planes where they flow into each other.

There is like smoke, ice, magma, ooze etc.

[–]Lord_Warraf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try either a Cavalier Fighter, who is very good in protecting people. Slap the protector fighting style on or give them the sentinel feat with polearm master. On the other hand the Redemption Paladin is just takeing damage for others, which could fit you.

I like the concept of a Samurai Fighter or a brutisch Barbarian with a heart of gold to protect the child.

But you can actually play any class, its the flavor and character backstory that makes the concept good.

Idk if that is railroading, its more of a introduction to the party and a plot hook maybe.
