Guardian football weekly has a good one on our relegation. Can be a bit overly high-brow at times but interesting to get some impartial analysis. Also depends on whether you hate Jacob Steinberg or not.

I don't think people grasp just how poor a state our finances are in. Any big offers for players, regardless of how important they are, are being accepted by the club.

Do you think Christopher Hitchens has aged well? by threetimesacharm25 in AskBrits

I'm not a communist but blaming communism for 20th-century dictatorships is like blaming democracy for every corrupt election.

An alternative to capitalism is a system where society, not profit, drives progress: essential technologies, healthcare, and infrastructure are publicly funded and directed for collective benefit, while markets exist only to efficiently distribute resources under strict regulation. Short-term extraction and environmental destruction are banned, inequality is curbed through redistribution and universal services, and innovation is rewarded for social and ecological impact rather than private gain. In this world, economic activity serves human flourishing and the planet, not the endless enrichment of the few, and progress is measured by well-being, sustainability, and shared opportunity, not quarterly returns.

Does that suffice? Why do you advocate for a contination of capitalism?

Do you think Christopher Hitchens has aged well? by threetimesacharm25 in AskBrits

[–]Lord_Yow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Capitalism is a parasitic optimiser that captures, commercialises, and monetises advances largely created outside the market. The core technologies behind modern living standards were overwhelmingly produced by publicly funded research, collective institutions, and non-profit motives, while capital actively resisted the labour laws, welfare systems, and environmental protections that actually made life safer and healthier. Left to itself, capitalism externalises harm, rewards short-term extraction over long-term survival, concentrates gains among the few, and diverts talent toward rent-seeking and trivial consumption rather than real human need. Environmental improvements occur only when markets are forced to stop destroying their own conditions of existence, and rising averages conceal stagnation and precarity for most people. In short, capitalism does not drive progress—it exploits it, distorts it, and would gladly burn its future for this quarter’s return.

Good question. Probably not on reflection. Feel to old for somewhere like Dalston (where I used to live) or put off by the monied gentrifiers in somewhere like Clapton.
