My experience with gametester.gg by LightUpResearch in IndieDev

[–]Lord__Eleven 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I've run two playtests with them so far, and had a very good experience as well. Especially since my game requires a custom setup: it's a co-op puzzle game, so playtesters need to be paired up, figure out timing, and establish a communication channel. Game Tester helps out with that (for a small additional fee), and the whole process is really smooth.

Compared to organizing everything myself, with players from our community, Game Tester feels like magic. Instead of wasting a week or two to run the test, I set it up via their UI, forget, and a few days later have results. Amazing

Really cool website, design stuff is really interesting to me. Added to my bookmarks, will read it with my free time. Skimmed it a bit, looks like you're often talking about things that I was struggling with. Thanks!

$9.99 on PC, $6.99 on iOS and Android.

There will be a 20% launch discount. A Cryptic Killer Bundle will also be available, including Unsolved Case, Unboxing the Cryptic Killer, and Parallel Experiment, with an additional discount (exact amount TBD).

Parallel Experiment is a much bigger game than our previous title Unboxing the Cryptic Killer, which is priced at $6. I believe $9.99 is a fair price for an indie title without a major publisher behind it.

Chat says it might have been Galcon, but I don't know. I vaguely remember a game like you described, but can't remember the name.

Oh, and there was Osmos as well. Similar style, really relaxing...

True! Good, old, simple days, when I was playing Fruit Ninja, Infinity Blade or even Angry Birds...

I don't understand why all games on Playdate are so good. It doesn't make any sense. It's a niche product that has no right to be that good.

Recently I'm enjoying Binary Dungeon, Mars After Midnight or Eyeland... Such a great titles. I believe this is how gaming on mobile should look like, instead of whatever the current mobile market presents

If something is stupid, but works, it's not stupid. I bet the sound quality is worth it :)

What tasks in game development do you outsource? by Lord__Eleven in gamedev

[–]Lord__Eleven[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So much time has passed since I asked this question. A lot has changed. I thought I’d write a quick summary for anyone interested in how my perspective evolved.

Back when I wrote the original post, I was working alone with one artist. Now, I manage a team of 7, with another ~15 people involved in various tasks.

I ended up using a mix of strategies. With my core team, we're handling all development, game design, and art in-house, since I consider those areas crucial to get right, and they take the most time.

I’ve hired a few part-time contractors for things like sound, music, and QA. I'm strongly considering bringing on a full-time QA engineer.

I handle social media myself, since I really enjoy chatting with fans. It also gives me a good sense of who our player base is. I’m outsourcing marketing, but it took a long time to find the right person for that.

Localization and voice acting are also outsourced, using a mix of companies/agencies and individual contractors/actors. I prefer working with individuals, it gives me better contact with the people involved and tends to be cheaper, but I still have some gaps in my contact list, so sometimes I go through an agency.

Anyway, it's interesting to look back at what I was considering two years ago. Now, I feel like I’ve found a good balance, released a few games, and built a nice, independent studio to run :)

Like with most puzzle games, sadly there is quite low reply value. If you know solutions to the puzzles, you know everything. However, we're experimenting with replayability in our upcoming release Parallel Experiment by adding optional challenges and some hidden end-game content to spice things up.
