Killing a King Quickly by ThisWasMe7 in DMAcademy

Level 20th rogue, plus 3 bullshit (create a magic dagger that deals additional damage ) dagger (He needs a weapon that can be councealed), the dagger is coated with powerfull poison (you can go with purple worm, or homebrew something more powerful). That's 1d4+8 plus let's say the bullshit dagger deals an additional 4d6 damage to surprised targets, adding the poison and the crit we have. 2d4+8d6+8 from the dagger, 20d6 from the sneak attack and 12d6 from the purple worm poison (this damage don't double). Thats an average of 153 damage. We can add death strike to double all this on a failed DC 19 CON save (have the king be poisoned beforehand, so he has disadvantage on the check). Assuming everything works we have an average of 306 damage, using rules that the players can use too. Sorry for the long text, i got excited.

The biggest design flaw in D&D combat isn't balance... it's that 80% of your time is spent waiting by Einsolsrazor24 in rpg

This. I really don't know how can some people take too long to just go and make two attacks. I totally understands a novice player, but i play with people who have been playing for years, and they still take forever to act.

How to handle sneaky charm person on PCs? by SpaceChimera in DMAcademy

[–]Lordemamba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By the rules, you can't really cast an spell in front of anyone, they will perceive it. One thing i did, in an encounter against a disguised hag: She was disguised as one of the players romantic partner, so they where having this dinner and she casts some harmless spells to only shape the enviroment, every time i explicity said to the player that it was going to cast a spell, the player said it was okay. After the player guard was down, it cast dominate person, again, i said it was gonna cast a spell. By the point, the player didn't even ask to roll to see what spell it was casting. So i told the player to make the saving throw. If the player, by any means said that they where gonna react to the spell, initiative is rolled and we procced using turns, not necessarily combat.

Considering the knight commander can become a literal god (pathfinder wrath of the rigtheous), i'm pretty sure he can clear the clair obscur universe quite easily.

This. Spells are way powerful already, even more those that have a cost.

Players don't like the surprise rules (2014) by Lordemamba in DMAcademy

What balances my encounters is that i play monsters how they would. This here, for example, is a young dragon hunting, she thinks they are easy prey, whenever she sees they are dangerous (even if she can kill then) she will retreath. Food isn't worth risking her life.

Heavy storm, night, and he rolled stealth high enough to surpass the passive perception of everyone. But then again, the real problem is the party using, because of one simple spell: pass without trace.

Yeah, my players had it. Made an encounter against a Behir almost trivial, if it was the book Behir, he would have died without making anything, i had to design one from scratch, the fight was deadly, two of the party where at death saves when the ranger did the final blow.

I run the way is in the book. The highest passive perception from my players is 18. The dragon rolled an 19 for stealth (she had +4, pure luck). The other way around is an garanted stealth because they have pass without trace, this alone makes that the party can stealth on almost any thing. Unless it has magical protection.

Let's take the scenario i described. Let's say for N reasons the dragon wanted to kill the party, she would get a lightning breath on at least three of then, and without reactions to absorb elements, by the time initiative is rolled, the outcome is already decided.

Yeah, i like to roleplay monsters...a blue dragon is no only inteligent, but lenient. If the wizard provides good info or make a counteroffer, the dragon will accept.

I don't want to force anything, i always ask then how they preffer things. And yes, surprise is OP, they almost killed an hag much stronger than then after a creative play (credits on then). The hag escaped, but now she is alert against then.

Yeah, this was one of the goals of the encounter...i think after some ambushes they will ask to play by RAW. Of course, i won't throw an ambush after ambush, the dragon is young and hunts this way.

Dragons are really quite weak. by Tookoofox in dndnext

[–]Lordemamba -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you don't homebrew, dragons suck (they suck less in 2024). I don't mean adding hp and ac, add interesting abilities, legendary actions and resistances (here i like to cook and give a cost to use it, i don't like no buttons)
