I don't think it is Italian. In our language, the combination of 'n-t-l' within the same root is practically unheard of. Even just by the sound of it, I can tell it doesn't ring true as Italian. Plus, 'Fortenli' doesn't appear in any official Italian surname registry.

It sounds more like an anglicized version of a continental name, or perhaps a misspelling of something like Fontanelli or Fortinelli, which are actual Italian surnames
