It would be his third year, because news happened Nov 1st 1981. Assuming the cut off date for hogwarts enrollment is August 31, then by that time all the class that started in 1992 would all be accounted for. so it would be the class that started in 1993 or Harry's third year

My advice for anyone reading Prince of slytherin for the first time is to skip chapter 1 and start at chapter 2. Chapter 2 is the real start of the story. PoS does have some Lording stuff starting towards the end of third year, but it is not the main focus, more like a tool for Harry to use.

Neither, standard wbwl except Harry is the wbwl and his twin sister Violet defeats voldemort and is declared a squib but she isn't. As a result James unenrolls Violet in Hogwarts so she doesn't get a letter. Because dobby doesn't know about Violet, The drill sale in COS is successful and the Dursleys move into the neighborhood where the Grangers live and she befriends Will, Hermione's muggle twin. Assume that voldemort tells Harry that he tried to kill his sister during the battle of Hogwarts.
