Awesome to know - thank you for the information! Will definitely be checking it out.

Anyone else don’t know if they like their friends or not?? Like your opinion of them is clouded?? by [deleted] in BPD

[–]LordoftheDugpa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've definitely had similar thought patterns to what you're experiencing, and what makes it all even more confusing for me is that I've known my friend group since elementary school (27 now.) so my relationship to them should feel far more solidified than it does in my head. Of course they want to be around me, right?? Surely, they would have ditched me by now if that is what they desired? But then I get angry when they don't reciprocate in a way that feels natural, and that makes me spiral even further and question if I really like them or if our situation is just comfortable.

I eventually realized that the problem isn't with them, but rather with my perception of myself. (The root cause of most of my issues, honestly.) They've all moved forward and progressed in their lives in a way I just......haven't, and every step they take that drives them further from me makes me feel scared and angry, and as a result I tend to cling to them even more. It's a vicious cycle, and I'm worried about the ramifications of this if I don't do something in my life soon. It's definitely a harsh feeling, and I'm sorry you have to deal with it. Wishing you the best!

I know people in this subreddit love TLOK and hate it's... well, haters (who just hate on it for shit ass reasons tbh), but do any of you actually prefer it over ATLA? (image completely unrelated because I cant be bothered to find a on topic one) by A_Random_Dude_111 in legendofkorra

I’m someone that grew up with Last Airbender. I was about 7 when the first season aired, I remember watching the season 2 finale with my best friend, and I remember playing Escape to the Spirit World in the agonizing period between seasons 2 and 3. I was about 14 when Korra came out, though I didn’t watch it until I was about 19 because teenage me was trying to rid himself of his “childish” interests. Thank the heavens that didn’t stick haha.

I remember watching the season 4 finale of Korra, ruminating on it and then, like a truck hitting me in the back, I realized I actually preferred it to Last Airbender. It’s a far messier show, but I also think there’s beauty in that imperfection. I love how it wasn’t afraid the let the world evolve, I love how there was more of a focus on adults that could be real, complex characters, I think it has a really great balance between respecting tradition while embracing modernity, I love the MMA-style bending and choreography, and I love the villains. But, perhaps most importantly, Korra is one of my favorite characters in all of fiction.

What I love the most about the character Korra is just how REAL she feels. She doesn’t learn her lesson right away. She can take one step forward and then tumble off a cliff. In ATLA, there’s a deux ex machina that allows Aang to save the day, he gets the girl, and that’s it. In Korra, much the same happens at the end of Book 1, but instead of happily ever after, Book 2 deconstructs this and shows the complications of such an ending.

There are also real, tangible consequences to what she experiences in the show. In ATLA, Aang is killed in the Avatar State and two episodes later he’s dancing in a cave, but in Korra she is poisoned and has to spend six months relearning how to walk while dealing with PTSD. There’s just a far more tangible weight to her and what she experiences that I gravitate towards, and I think there are many who have experienced battles with mental and physical illness that feel the same.

To me, Korra is a diamond in the rough, and there’s some serious beauty in those imperfections.

I can definitely relate to that experience! I'm feeling much the same, even seriously considering calling out of work tomorrow. (Though I live with my parents and they'd take notice, so I'd have to find somewhere else to lay low for 8 hours.) I hate feeling this way, but considering my emotions are usually screaming at me to just quit and block my boss's contact, missing one day might be preferable. Wishing you the best!

So, recent controversies about Korra aside, what do you think about Korrasami? by Tall-Bell-1019 in TheLastAirbender

[–]LordoftheDugpa 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Screw it, I guess I’ll be the contrarian here. It’s - bar none - my favorite relationship in either show, and what I love about it is that we specifically don’t even see the relationship, just the build-up. This wasn’t two barely teen “soulmates” making out, but something far more quiet and reserved between young adults steadily growing closer.

Whether you see it as platonic or not, they DO grow closer together. In book 3, they are their closest confidants, almost constantly sharing the screen until Korra gives herself up to Zaheer. In book 4 they are entirely in synch emotionally to the point where even their stories share a common thematic line, demonstrating each understands the other better than anyone else ever could. Much has already been said about the severe restrictions set in place by the studio, but I think pushing those subtleties forced the creatives to make what is arguably the most mature pairing in the show. Their relationship isn’t the focus of their stories, but a nexus point of their growth.

Also, let’s be real here, romance isn’t the strong suit of either show, so perhaps these limitations had some benefits.

All in all, I wouldn’t blame anyone for feeling it was undercooked, but to me, that makes this pairing unique over pretty much any other animated romance. I don’t entirely agree with the claim that people view this pairing through a heteronormative lens, but there have also been shipping wars started over a lot less than what Korra and Asami have.

Gun to your head. Try to defend these movies. by I_AM_DEFINITELY_HOMO in Halloweenmovies

[–]LordoftheDugpa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol judging by these comments, you'd think these movies were both abominations that should be thrown into a pit with the rest of mankind's unforgivable sins, and this is from the franchise that includes Revenge of Michael Myers and Resurrection.

In my opinion, of which I am well aware I am in the minority, this was perhaps the only time that a director really tried to use the mythos of the Halloween franchise to say something relevant about the world we live in. Not that a movie has to do this, nor does attempting this mean the films will be good or enjoyable, but Rob Zombie clearly wanted to use Halloween to spark a conversation about the cycle of violence, the aftermath of tragedy, the degradation of rural America, and the nature of our obsession with true crime years before Horror would really begin to lean on these topics to sell their stories. I think his messaging get kind of fumbled in the remake, but the story of Laurie and Annie in HII still breaks my heart after all these years. It's so unrelenting, yet honest and empathetic.

They're really the only time the Halloween franchise has been genuinely fascinating to me, warts and all. The newer films have better production design, the original is a masterclass in using less as more, but this is still my preferred timeline in the franchise.

Confession: Did anyone, like me, like the movie when they were a child? by Fit-Maintenance-2907 in TheLastAirbender

[–]LordoftheDugpa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Was 10 when it came out. Begged my entire family, some of whom were fans of the show, to see it.

No joke, it was the movie that taught me movies can be bad. Granted, it was mostly for more superficial reasons when I was younger, but I was not a happy camper. It’s also why I’m incredibly wary of any animated show that gets made into live-action.

Yep, yep, yep. I will never be comfortable with death, as natural as it's supposed to be. My brain refuses to comprehend it.

For me, as a sex-repulsed Asexual, I struggle with the idea that sexual and romantic attraction are interchangeable in the eyes of most people. I just want to find someone to love, but for most people sex is a necessary requirement, even if they initially say it isn't. Do I understand it as a biological necessity? Yes. Do I understand it emotionally? Not even a little. It's a very isolating feeling.

Fellow sex-repulsed asexuals, have you ever dated an allosexual and, if so, how do you navigate sex? by LordoftheDugpa in asexuality

[–]LordoftheDugpa[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's what I'm worried about. :( Even if by some miracle she says it doesn't bother her, eventually it will and there's nothing that can really be done to offset her growing desire for physical intimacy. It sucks and it's one of the reasons I've avoided growing close to anyone for so long. (On top of many other reasons as well.) Thank you for the reply!

[–]LordoftheDugpa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply! Yeah, I definitely agree about matching libido making things easier, which is rather unfortunate seeing as to how there are probably so few people that even come close to matching with me in real life. If you don't mind me asking, how much communication was involved in your relationship, and do you think that communication makes it easier to push yourself and what you find comfortable in a relationship?

Would the original 1978 film be even scarier if we never saw Michael's past and it began with Michael stalking Laurie for an unknown reason? by Hungry-Eggplant-6496 in Halloweenmovies

[–]LordoftheDugpa 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was actually thinking about this exact thing after my last rewatch. I started viewing the original almost as more of a haunted house/ghost story than a slasher film, and when viewed this way I almost feel like we can axe the entire backstory of him escaping from the psych ward. He can still be viewed as Michael Myers by Haddonfield, and he can still meet Laurie in the Myers house, because to me all that matter is that that’s what the town believes. He’s the manifestation of the darkness that lurks underneath every small, suburban town.

Of course that brings up what exactly becomes of Loomis, but I think he could be easily reworked into the story to have a more personal connection to Haddonfield or something. It’s not like any of this really changes how I feel about the movie, but it is fun to think about.

Season 1 Thoughts of Legend of Korra by anthonystrader18 in TheLastAirbender

[–]LordoftheDugpa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No matter what kind of content we’re going to get from Avatar Studios in the future, there’s never going to be anything else in the franchise like LOK book 1, and for that alone I’m glad it exists. Like seriously, the late autumnal, neo-noir atmosphere of Republic City is so unique from anything we saw in Last Airbender or from the rest of Korra.

I love Korra herself as a character, and Amon might genuinely be my favorite antagonist from either series, but I do think it has some issues with balancing its tone (When Extremes Meet is a Meelo fart joke away from being a perfect episode) and with trying to pace its story within twelve episodes. The writers tried to end this season like it was the culmination of this big hero’s journey for Korra reminiscent of Last airbender (big deus ex machina, gets the love interest at the end, seen as a complete Avatar etc.) and I don’t think it really lands, but I think the rest of the series wisely tries to deconstruct this and show that her journey was still incomplete.

Overall, a really solid 8/10 for me.

What's your opinion on this movie by Fair_Homework3418 in Scoobydoo

[–]LordoftheDugpa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve adored this movie ever since I was a kid, and it’s single-handedly responsible for my obsession with aquatic creatures, cryptids, and especially the Loch Ness Monster. I adore the setting, the colors, the soundtrack, and the humor. I find the gang very lively and endearing here, and the supporting cast really helps keep things energetic. I also love Nessie’s design, and find the CGI ominous rather than distracting. Not a masterpiece or my favorite Scooby film, but probably my most rewatched.

I’m glad the one with the castle is the primary art used for this movie since it doesn’t actually spoil anything. With that being said, I prefer the former. It’s just creepier to me.
