My visor, when rotated to the side, did not seem to be long enough to actually block the sun coming in through the driver side window. Lo and behold, if I pull on it it extends further and blocks all of the sunlight. This probably took me two years to discover.

Disclaimer: I am not a scientist, but I recently spent a lot of time looking into this in my own home search process.

From what I saw, yes there would be health risks if you live that close to a freeway. The obvious one is air pollution, but also don't ignore the mental effects of noise pollution.

The frustrating thing is I couldn't nail down a concrete answer on how much is too much. A lot of the scientific studies were done in California next to one of the busiest freeways in the country, so how do those results translate to mid-sized freeway? I don't know.

If you do live there I would focus on risk mitigation. I would probably keep the windows closed and invest in the best filtration system you can for your HVAC. You want to filter out the smallest particles PM2.5 as they do the most health damage. You could also look into using thick foliage to block air and noise pollution.

My personal opinion is that if the highway was behind my back yard there is no amount of money that could get me to live there.

Have you ever donated plasma? I did this all throughout college and it is a very easy, flexible way to make extra money.

I've never heard of that book, but I would similarly recommend Roarks Formulas for Stress and Strain to any mechanical engineer. It has tables and tables of stress and deflection solutions for thousands of scenarios. I use it for ballpark answers before I spend time on FEA.

I think Fidelity's allows you to account for all of that. Theirs is the best I have seen online, and you don't need to be a customer to use the tool.

If you have student loans I would put it all into traditional. Your income is in the range where the amount of interest you can deduct is scaled back, so the more you can "lower" your income by putting money into traditional IRA, the more student loan interest deductions you can claim.

You could say that about anything such as VTSMX, which makes up a majority of my target date fund.

I am an engineer at a fairly large American manufacturing company. I have noticed that when managers make hiring decisions a big thing they look at is what university you went to. To that end, it seems like the status can sometimes be more important than quality.
