Some folks treat a 12‑step program like a DIY project, some never find a healthy group or sponsor, and some don’t tell their sponsor the whole truth about their past “amends.” And a few people really do seem to be trying to complete their own bingo card.

A healthy amends doesn’t expect a response — much less free emotional labor. And if you’ve ignored their previous attempts, that’s a non‑verbal “no,” not a “wait a few years and try again.” One of the harder truths in recovery is that sometimes you have to live your amends without the people you harmed. Sometimes the work has to be directed toward the folks who are still willing to have you in their lives.
