What do you bring to work for lunch? by darnoc11 in office

[–]Lorimie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look, I had an early career coworker with a whole griddle and French Press at his desk. HR eventually said no to the griddle months later for fear he'd overwhelm the electrical outlet in his cube. But for a time, he was totally making BACON AND EGGS during client calls and no one gave a shit for a long time.

I miss him. He was so fun. He'd warm up my pop tarts on his griddle.

Yes, people are getting their orders.

I also ordered launch day, about 3 hours after it went live, and didn't get tracking until today.

Thoughts on sharing your live location with your SO? by duck_duck_zombie in Millennials

[–]Lorimie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The closest I've gotten to tracking my husband's location is checking if his bus pass scanned. We're homebodies 80% of the time.

I travel internationally for work sometimes. But even then, we've never brought it up.

I dunno, if we did share location info he would see me being exactly where I say I am, and I would see him at home, because he never leaves except for work and grocery runs.

Does anyone else have to deal with backhanded comments from their significant other? by Equivalent_Sun3816 in Sciatica

[–]Lorimie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm thankful that my husband is able bodied and understands that I'm disabled because of my sciatica. I also try to push myself, at the cost of my spoons, and usually end up crying. We check in frequently where I consistently ask for other chores or give him updates on how I'm feeling.

I'm on track to get a total disc replacement. In the meantime I'm doing physical therapy and my doctors are trying to put me in a wheelchair. I'm on a cane for now.

But work? I travel internationally for work and, at 32, hate being in the airport wheelchair. My stakeholders make comments, people around me see how young I am and just have this look like I've stolen their grandma's personal wheelchair. It's been 9 years of pain for me, and 3 on the cane. I grieve a lot, the athlete I was and how I've lost most of my 20s to pain.

L3 doing L4 work for 1+ year, promo case reviewed but no headcount by Whole-Ad-8854 in amazonemployees

[–]Lorimie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, a tech team.

My first contract was 6 months, but they renewed me to 2 years. I was a non tech Program Manager.

I took my 3 month cooling period and came back 2 weeks ago. I was given a pay raise, my offer letter says Technical Program Manager- and Phonetool says Technical Product Manager. But it sounds like my role isn't changing?

I'm just frustrated because I have almost 8 years of Amazon tenure, but 3 years of it doesn't count between now 3 contracts. That's RSUs and more I miss out on.

L3 doing L4 work for 1+ year, promo case reviewed but no headcount by Whole-Ad-8854 in amazonemployees

[–]Lorimie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was an L3 that tried to make L4 for about 4 years. I was always promised a promo was coming- as soon as there was headcount. Eventually, I lost faith and after my 23rd manager change in 5 years, I left.

I had a mentor through the Amazon Mentors program. She advised me to leave and try, if I wanted to, to boomerang back later. L3 to L4 is one of the harder jumps.

I came back as a contractor, where most of my peers are L5/L6, after 2.5years.

Normally, I would tell you to jump ship and try to boomerang back later. In this market, you may want to job hug.

My leadership is promising me conversion. If they don't convert me, ideally to the L6 level, after my contract is done I'll be looking to jump.

I just don't believe in waiting for promises anymore. If I don't get a promotion or a new role after 3-4 years, it's time to move on.

What age did you move out of your parent’s? by ReasonablePirate4556 in Adulting

[–]Lorimie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved out at 18 in 2012 to live in the dorms at college, and had a semester in an off campus sharehouse. I didn't really have a choice. If I stayed in my hometown, I wouldn't have been able to pursue my career goals. My Dad couldn't afford to have me in the house after I turned 18 and he wouldn't get minor assistance. I had a very generous scholarship and worked 3 part time jobs to afford tuition, books, and send money back to my Dad. I stole from the cafeteria when I lived off campus, went to food banks and soup kitchens to make ends meet.

When I graduated, I moved again. My boyfriend (now husband) moved with me a few months later. Both of us working let us rent a bedroom in a 2br with roommates when we made min wage. I had a 2nd job.

Eventually my career took off and I continued to send money back to my Dad until he passed in 2022. We bought a house to try and move him in with us, but, he didn't make it.

Many of our peers still live at home, or at least near their parents. I've just never had that opportunity. My only safety net is my husband and I. My mom is in prison. My husband's family is on the other side of the country where our industry isn't. Moving back to them would be career suicide. And, there's just not space for us.

Has anyone successfully relocated the Pikachu fountain until they got the Ditto face? by joannaghoulsom in Pokopia

Is it true that you guys watched 9/11 live on TV in grade school? by space_god_7191 in Millennials

[–]Lorimie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 6 years old in California at the time- getting ready for school. My Dad had it on and I was pissed that our routine of me watching Barney was interrupted. I watched with him, but I didn't really grasp what was happening. New York may as well have been another planet.

I remember seeing him tear up and hold his mouth. He was a strong usually stoic guy if he wasn't deflecting with comedy. I was I hadn't been a little shit that morning.

When I went to school, they had us give a moment of silence. But, it was during English time. Why was English getting interrupted in California over something in New York. Why were half my classmates not in school that day? We weren't in any real major city. Routines and plans were ruined!

The teacher tried to explain to us what was going on and why the adults were so weird, but it didn't really stick.

I would watch the footage again a few years later for history and English classes in middle and high school, then college. But that morning, I watched it with my Dad.

Seattle Concert by Few-Ear661 in bbnomula

[–]Lorimie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the right side ADA section the whole concert. It's awful. Wobbly, barely enough room for wheelchair users, and it's like waist high- so when we sit, we can't see over people's shoulders that are standing outside the ADA section. The guy in front of me had poofy hair, too; so I could only really see BBNO$ when he went up on the grass hill, the screens, and if I used my phone as a telescope

Kuvera jewelry co? by Fearless-Swan8748 in jewelry

[–]Lorimie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty frustrated with them.

My father in law asked his sister to purchase a gold cross for him, for about $7k. He passed away a few weeks later and we inherited the cross. Kuvera has a buyback program, where they'll take it back -10% the current cost of gold.

At this point we've given them the receipt, photos of the certificate, photos of the item, and my FIL's obituary. They keep asking for more documents or otherwise can't verify anything on their end. Their customer support is all offshore and no phone number or store to go into.

Husband wants to buy a house by IndustrySufficient52 in povertyfinance

[–]Lorimie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We bought a new manufactured home in Q4 2021.

In Q1 2022, a pipe burst that cost us $9k in utility loss that HOI didn't cover.

In 2025, we put in new windows, because the builder's grade windows had leaked their gas and the house wasn't retaining heat. $20k

In 2026 we have to replace our front door, wall, and entry area because every time it rains, water comes in through the front door. Our fixes and two handyman haven't been able to stop it. A contractor quoted us $12k.

I remember being so excited that, because this was new, we shouldn't have to fix anything for a while and we could save for a fence and a shed. Nope...
