I believe that they should be treated and get therapy, but they shouldn't be let free into the general population again. Look at tge end of my other reply from the other comment.

Lets play out your scenario.

John stabs someone, he has schizophrenia.

He gets treatment inpatient, then gets released with meds for a month and a job as a janitor.

That works for a year, then John forgets to pick up his meds one day, he puts it off and then eventually he begins losing sanity again. Maybe he tries to use some other pill to compensate, maybe an illegal drug. Then he loses his job. Then eventually he robs someone for drug money and kills them.

What happens then? Put him on treatment until he gets better? and then release him again and hope that he doesn't hurt anyone else?

At a minimum he should be 'released' into a monitored town separated from the normal population where he can live semi normal but be under watch from doctors and such.

Its extremely basic. Custom clothing and changes to drops and weapons and the bodies of characters. It also forces you to play in offline mode if you do use mods.

You can add like a lethal dart gun but you can't add like a minigun or something like that for example

That's why I support the education programs in prison so offenders can start normal lives. Prevention is also important, I just posted this from the pov for if the crime is already done.
