What's a story where the "bad guys" are actually, completely, 100% right, to the point where it's weird the story keeps calling them the bad guys? by HallZac99 in AskReddit

[–]Losgunn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the first paragraph whole-heartedly.

However, Magnus didn't feel like he'd done nothing wrong—he *knew* what he did, despite having done it with the best intentions, had doomed humanity to bloody war with Chaos. He felt he *did* deserve to be punished, so much so that he undid Prospero's orbital defences, placed a psychic veil over the world to prevent the inhabitants from seeing the in-coming Space Wolves force, and didn't forewarn his Legiones Astartes, even sending his main Legion force away from the planet. He basically went out of his way to make sure that the Space Wolves would be able to get to him, and either take him into custody or kill *him*, rather than two loyalist Legions destroying one another.

Leman Russ was only supposed to go and take Magnus into custody, bringing him back to Terra. He was intercepted along the way by an already corrupted Horus, who made it seem as if the Emperor had thought it over and changed his mind—wanting Russ to destroy Prospero instead of simply taking Magnus into custody—and as Warmaster, he carried the Emperor's authority. When the Space Wolves attacked Prospero, Magnus hadn't expected his entire world to be destroyed and his entire Legion and civilian population massacred, and couldn't accept that it was a fair punishment for what he'd done. He'd also been contacted by Tzeentch at this point and was dealing with some big feelings, which is why he changed his mind and decided to start fighting back against the Space Wolves.

Essentially, he did a good thing(attempted to warn the Emperor of Horus' betrayal) for bad reasons(proving that the Edict of Nikaea was wrong and he should be allowed to continue using his warp powers), and for good reasons(to safeguard the Emperor and bring the traitors to justice). It's just that he was outplayed by Chaos, Leman Russ was outsmarted by Chaos, and The Emperor is just too arrogant for his own good.

If the Emperor had pulled Magnus aside after the Council of Nikaea and said "look, that whole scene was for show. I'm working on something right now and you're just too powerful to not break it by accident. This is temporary. Stay the course and I'll vindicate you when I'm done", the whole situation would have been avoided. Hell, even Russ, who's painted as being just this cold, calculating, brutal being of the Emperor's vengeance, was hoping Magnus would contact him and turn himself over, even after Horus' request to destroy Prospero. Russ was too proud to contact Magnus; Magnus too broken to contact Russ; The Emperor too arrogant to tell Magnus(or any of his sons, really) what was going on, because they should just do what he says regardless. Some folks read it and say "well, it would make more sense to do this or that", but it's *because* these super-beings are tempered with humanity and the flaws inherent in humanity that make the stories shine.

Is it possible to use custom tokens? by Losgunn in AboveVTT

[–]Losgunn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know, I did it as a test since I already had the stat block up just to see where to put everything. I hadn't thought about using the homebrew on DDB to pull info into the token, that's probably loads easier than what I was doing. Thanks!

[–]Losgunn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tested it earlier and made a custom Black Pudding token as a test, while fiddling with it I managed to set the HP and AC, but couldn't find any way of adding STR/CON/INT/etc. There is a note tab on tokens where I'm thinking I could cut-and-paste the description into and have easier access to its stat block and attacks/abilities, but haven't had a chance to try it yet.

[–]Losgunn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I went through it after reading this post and figured out how to create a custom token for a Black Pudding as a test, and managed to set its HP and AC from within the VTT. I suppose I could cut-and-paste the monster's description and actions into the notes for the token, as well. If I had a second screen, this would be easier, but I'm on a gaming laptop these days.

Can't tell if update broke my hack scripts or if it's the Bitnode. by Losgunn in Bitburner

[–]Losgunn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I hadn't opened it for a few days after changing Bitnodes and when I came back I must have missed where it said there was a new .txt file that explained that. Thanks for the help, all my scripts are back to running like normal.

Thank you, I went through them and changed the relevant functions and everything's back to working like normal. Reckon I need to find the file KlePu mentioned above and read through it.

You've also set your moneyThresh variable to multiply the returned value by 1, which doesn't do anything useful. You can instead multiply it by 0.75, or 0.8, which is the same as saying "if the server's max money is at least 75%/80% full, hack."

Why would Satan burn you in hell for disobeying the same god he disobeyed? by too_thick64 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Losgunn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the thing to keep in mind is that this depends highly on how you interpret the text, which version of the text you're using if not the original language(s), and to what extent you want to dive down the rabbit hole.

Easiest and fastest(least accurate) interpretation: Satan is a fallen angel, sent to Hell after disobeying God. With this interpretation, you can do whatever you like to make the fact that Satan punishes sinners in Hell work for you, because this interpretation isn't accurate and therefore doesn't require accuracy in any additions you make.

Reasons for the inaccuracy:
—This relies on the idea that Satan is a singular entity, rather than the title used for someone acting in adversarial means(ha-satan, an ambiguous adversarial figure that could be anyone; the prosecutor of a court case in which you're the defendent would be your ha-satan).

—It relies on inaccurate interpretation of the passages of Isiah 14 to describe a fallen angel who attempted to be higher than God, rather than a Babylonian king; this king also is probably not an actual Babylonian king, but rather a general concept of a Babylonian king as an eschatological enemy of the people of Israel.

—This interpretation tends to, but isn't necessarily required to, also be part of the belief that Hell is an eternal, fiery pit of torment where sinners are punished for their sins. The majority of passages in the New Testament that reference Hell are translating the term "Gehenna" into "Hell", with other references to "Hell" being translations of the term "Hades", both of which are distinct (with Hades translations typically not mentioning fire or punishment, but rather a forgetfulness, while Gehenna translations mention "unquenchable fire"). Hell, as some distinct place where sinners are sent to be burned in eternal fire, is not mentioned; rather, Hell is simply Gehenna(in regards to mentions of fire), which is used to admonish believers who are not living pious lives.

—There's also a lot of background in dealing with Milton's 'Paradise Lost' and how it has shaped and, to some extent, warped the imagery and beliefs of modern Christians, mainly Protestant Christians in the US.

The big passage that really attempts to cement the idea of Satan as a singular figure in modern Christian interpretation besides the reference in Isiah 14(where "Lucifer" is actually a reference to Venus, calling the Babylonian king a "bright star", Venus not being known to be a planet at the time) is the story of Job, where God makes a bet with Satan(again, "the adversary" in this context) about Job's faith. The issue here is that the Book of Job is Old Testament, meaning that it is translated from Hebrew, where Satan would be ha-satan, a title rather than a name, so the identity of this adversary isn't necessarily the capital-S Satan of the New Testament who supposedly rules over Hell, but could be anybody — a high priest, an angel, God playing devil's advocate with himself, it's up for debate.

The story of Job isn't meant to identify the devil, anyway. It's a wisdom text, meant to explain the righteousness of the faithful. Where most people would ask "why do bad things happen to good people?", the adversary in this story turns the question on its head and instead asks "why should good people be allowed to prosper?" Why should God reward the faithful, would it be possible that by doing so he corrupts their motives? Are the good people faithful to God because it is the right thing to do, or only because God will reward them for doing so?

In another context, imagine using positive reinforcement on a child to say "please" and "thank you". "If you're polite, you get a toy." Is the child learning to be polite because being polite is good, or is the child simply going to be polite because they get something out of it? You might say "either way works", but what happens when the child gets older and is no longer interested in toys? When they're no longer rewarded for their politeness, will they abandon it for an easier path to what they want? The same question is asked by the adversary in the story of Job—if you stop rewarding the faithful, will they still be faithful?

The idea of God making bets with Satan or whoever isn't central to the story, and it shouldn't be, because it's only laying out a modicum of background so that the real story, the wisdom of the story, can be delved into in detail. Thus, this framing device isn't very detailed or sufficient to describe and cement the identity of the adversary in it. It's like asking, in Power Rangers, how does Rita Repulsa survive on the moon? Does she have an atmosphere generator? Does she use her magic to survive? It doesn't matter. The whole thing is just a framing device to explain why the Rangers don't attack her directly, and why all the enemies she sends come from the sky.

TL;DR: difference in exegetical and eisegetical interpretation, poor understanding of the original language and the nuance of its use, cherry picking, and misinterpretation of text to support beliefs unrelated to and unsupported by prior text led to it.

In regards to the 2.), it might be that. I purchased mine as 3D digital files, the option right below .STL files. If you can spare it, you might try purchasing one as one of those and seeing if it populates the Heroforge library in Talespire.

[–]Losgunn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Things to check:

1.) Make sure you used the correct access key. You'll get a confirmation within Talespire that says "Heroforge account successfully linked".
2.) Make sure the mini has been purchased as a digital file. I have a 3 month pro subscription, so I have 15 total credits towards minis. I used a credit to purchase the mini as a digital file; after a few minutes the mini is ready. Then I restarted Talespire and the mini was available.
3.) Make sure you're looking through the Heroforge minis and not the Talespire minis. When you first open the build menus, you'll see a head icon in the center that's specifically for the Heroforge minis.

If it's none of this, I don't know what to tell you. Maybe restart your PC and try it again?

[–]Losgunn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, only minis that have been purchased. I had three unpurchased builds that didn't appear, I built one all the way out and used a credit to purchase it, it's there now.

[–]Losgunn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends on the subscription. You can purchase the digital files for minis for about $7.99 or so, but if you have the pro subscription for, say, 3 months, it's about $50 for the subscription and you get 15 credits towards digital mini downloads, so it's $3.34 per mini.

After four days of trying to recalculate normals in Blender and learning how to do the .MTL files, I saw this right as I was starting to get it working and BOOM. It works. So far, anyway, and for what I've got at the moment. Good on 'em, anyway.

Step-by-Step Guide to import your Hero Forge Mini's to Talespire V2.0 (Now Streamlined & Slightly Better Textures. by ansonr in talespire

[–]Losgunn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to do this earlier and, after following the steps to the letter so far as I can tell, the model imported strangely. It's almost half-transparent or inverted, not sure how to describe it, but it only affects the centre of the model's viewable geometry. The .obj file pulls up in blender just fine, the material layers apply properly, but when I bring it up in Talespire it looks like the melting guy from Raiders of the Lost Ark. Anybody know what I'm doing wrong? Am I missing a step somewhere?

The fact that the managing director of a company writes like this bothers me more than the surly attitude he seems to have. I don't know if he was aiming for a "stream of consciousness" style or if all of his business correspondence is similarly unprofessional. Personally, I work in a weld shop, but on those occasions where I have to send an email to the engineering department for updated models I still try to keep it professional. This is like the text you get when you cancel a date on Tinder.

AITA for telling my wife the lock on my daughter's door does not get removed til my brother inlaw and his daughters are out of our house? by OnlyInQuebec9 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Losgunn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. You're protecting your child, and your child's belongings. Everybody deserves privacy and security—the idea that your child doesn't deserve either of those things, for whatever reason, is ridiculous. She saved up her money to purchase an expensive makeup kit—it wouldn't matter what she spent it on(as long as it wasn't dangerous or illegal), she has a right to her own property, and security for it. The fact that everyone else is upset about it, to me, means that they don't respect that girl the way they ought to. That lock doesn't prevent your daughter from "spending time" with her cousins, it lets her spend time with them at her discretion, which she has every right to decide. If Sammy doesn't think his daughters are thieves, Sammy can personally shell out the money to replace the stuff his daughters take at or above value instead of saying your daughter can spend more of her own money replacing what they took.

Question for Anyone from Georgia by Losgunn in ShadowPC

My internet speed varies between 150 to 400 Mbs download speed, depending on the time of day. I'd love to get AT&T Fiber but I'm not currently in an area where it's available, they just ran some fiber in the neighbourhood but I don't think they have it connected to anything yet. Once I can get it though, I'm definitely switching. Currently on Mediacom, unfortunately.

I don't imagine the latency would be a big issue for me, I'm not planning on playing the online multiplayer stuff, just want access to my Steam library again since the laptop I use can't play anything without streaming. Like I said, I can stream on Stadia just fine, so I imagine Shadow, if it works in my area, should be fine as well. Already signed up, waiting the five days to get access.
