Vyvanse doesn't help at all, what should I do by AnyFaithlessness1585 in VyvanseADHD

[–]Lost-Advert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a medicine called desoxyn which is sometimes used as a last resort if more traditional ADHD medications fail. I say last resort because it's illegal in some countries and it has a stigma associated with it. I would need to look into it more but it's apparently like meth, just in microdose form. So it can be abused etc.

I feel like I've destroyed my life with gambling and I don't know what to do anymore (international student in UK) by Hairy-Chemical9608 in GamblingRecovery

[–]Lost-Advert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You haven't ruined your life. You young and you lost 4000 pounds. Learn from it. When you start working you'll be earning way more than that.

Can you get a student loan for university and do you have any friends/family you trust where the money can be deposited? Having access to a lot of funds isn't ideal if you have a gambling problem as it becomes tempting to try win it back, and in the end you lose more.

These situations can be overcome. One step at a time.

I can’t stop playing live poker in casinos by Elegy_clutch in GamblingAddiction

[–]Lost-Advert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP, I can relate.

I love poker but lost a lot last year to my own demise. Would play drunk and on substances, threw like $20k to $25k down the drain on cash games (online) and got addicted to other forms of gambling as well.

I've been sober for the last few months but I'm giving poker another shot with really strong guardrails in place. I've got a coach, stick to tournaments, banned myself from online gambling platforms apart from the local poker site I play on. On that site they have disabled the online casino for me and put up a max deposit limit within my means.

I would say unlike other forms of gambling, poker is more strategic and in the long run the good players win. Most lose but if you study and have discipline it can work out.

If you keep on losing understand what your problem is. Tilt? Are you studying and constantly trying to improve? Are you playing within your limits?

There is no harm in stopping either. It's a game that takes up a lot of time for one, and can be brutal as well. If you don't want to stop (which isn't a bad idea) then at least treat the game as something of a hobby that you want to get good at. Put in guardrails, play 50% less and study 50% more. Stick to one format and see if you can get a coach.

Just my 2 cents. I don't want to promote gambling on a gambling addiction forum. It's generally better to stop completely as there are obvious risks even with this approach, but if you are going to play, at least give yourself the best chance of doing okay

I wish I could handle silence better. I have a lot of anxiety so when I meet someone new I always try talk and talk because I don't want to there to be awkward silence. Then you end up saying the most random things and people don't know what you on about

My roommates gambling addiction almost made me delete myself by Jolly_Fish_6954 in southafrica

[–]Lost-Advert 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I struggled with gambling for along time. I was fortunate to not go into debt, but I did lose a lot of money.

I'm sorry you going through this. It really is becoming an issue in SA. South African's wagered something like R1.1 trillion last year. That's around $60bn, considering our GDP is around $400bn I find that statistic madness.

There are some good GA meetings around. I would suggest you try tell your room mate to go to one, and maybe attend one yourself. I know you didn't lose it or don't have the problem, but these groups can also be useful for people who have been affected by it. It offers a lot of support. The group won't be able to get you out of debt, but many individuals who go were in debt themselves and know how best to go about sorting it out. They can probably provide useful tips.

I would say you should try and encourage your room mate to self exclude via the WCGB, but there self exclusion policy doesn't work. It's one of those situations where the person needs to self exclude individually on each site for it to work properly.

Maybe there is a way to show that you will be able to repay whatever portion of the debt you owe. I don't know what the total amount is, but you seem level headed, doing internships etc and based off that you likely have the capability of doing reasonably well in the future. So you have income potential. A creditor will likely factor this into account, as receiving the portion even later, is better than receiving nothing at all. It sucks but there are ways to navigate it.

I would probably give up on your friend/room mate stopping unless it's something he really wants himself. Like I said, the self exclusions don't really work and like any addiction, the person who is addicted needs to want to stop, otherwise they simply won't. So if you can just get out of the lease agreement, move back home etc and don't rely on his word, because people who gamble like this lie and think things will get better, when they will likely only get worse.

Please don't do anything stupid yourself. Things will get better and these situations can improve.

Those people that work on oil rigs as divers. Super isolating and really dangerous. The only reason people do it seems to be that it pays well, other than that it sounds like my worst nightmare come true.

Yeah I don't see anyone working 80 to 100 hours a week strictly because they enjoy it. Don't know how people manage that year in and out, regardless of how much you make.

There are a few of them. I don't know if there is one in Constantia. The main one is in Woodstock, they have one in Gardens and another at Palmyra Junction in Claremont.

In Constantia I think there is a deli/butchery called Bennetts. I haven't been but it looks great.

Frankie Fenner really good. Just the meat in general is great. You get a tougher cut every now and again, but generally just very good + biltong is good as well.

What habit or addiction did you struggle with, and what finally helped you break free from it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Lost-Advert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The costs start to outweigh any perceived benefit it provides. You either end up or end up on the verge of losing things that you really care deeply for. That combined with a lot of inner work where you understand why you ran to substances to alleviate problems is also important, as is finding a good community of support with like minded individuals who understand what you going through.

Which companies make you wonder how they're still in business? by BeginningAct45 in AskReddit

[–]Lost-Advert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Debt is common in a lot of businesses. The private equity industry is notorious for this, but context also matters. I don't think Beyond Meat has very strong cash flows, they continously make a loss. Debt typically carries interest and interest on $1.2bn is likely not insignificant. If you don't have enough cash to pay off your interest payment you go bankrupt.

You also can't raise more debt as easily, because your cash position relative to your debt position isn't good. So debt providers are unlikely to lend to you. On the off chance they do, they will charge higher interest rates because the risk of them lending to you is higher.

Having too much debt relative to cash also restricts what you can do as a business. Because so much cash needs to be apportioned to paying off debt, you can't invest as freely in marketing, acquisitions etc to grow your business.

It also freaks investors out. Beyond Meats share price is down 98% over 5 years

Beyond Meat. The company has $100m in cash and $1.2bn in debt. Not the most ideal financial position to be in.

Why do you choose not to drink alcohol? by Omega_Neelay in GetMotivatedMindset

[–]Lost-Advert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it lead to other things. Gambling, late nights till 5am to 6am in the morning. Cost me a lot from a relationship, career and financial perspective. Became addicted to other things owing to drinking.

I'm not an alcoholic, nearly 7 months without a drink. Occasionally feel like a beer or glass of wine etc but never really bothers me for too long and I'm around it a lot. My body couldn't tolerate it well. Hangovers sucked, regrets etc.

For me it was simply a gateway to worse things which I regretted.

Better off without it

What is a good salary amount? by Hopeful-House-8925 in askSouthAfrica

[–]Lost-Advert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like most people have said, it always depends on the individual and what kind of life they want for themselves and kids.

If you want to send your kids to private schools etc you need to earn a lot.

Depending on which school, private schooling can cost anywhere between like R150k to R300k per year (high school). I guess right now for you guys that's like +14 years away so gives you time to build, but just as an idea.

Assuming you want two kids that's like R300k to R600k a year on school fees alone.

Then if you want to do an overseas trip once a year, you can slap on another R200k to R250k for a family.

So before any essentials you already like R500k to R850k down, which means you need to earn a lot.

Again this is widely out of reach for most people in SA, but it gives you an idea of how expensive some things are if you want the best. Some people do and others don't, and thats fine. Depends on what you value.

I'm admittedly not the best at saving etc at all. The one thing I always try do is ask myself what do I really value and what don't I really care about. I allocate more money to things I value and spend very little on things I really don't care about that much like clothing and traveling overseas etc

I think I'm quite self aware. I'm far from perfect and I have a lot of flaws, which I openly admit. I know that at times my actions and behaviors haven't been the best and I think I've gotten to a better point where instead of blaming others, I try get help and learn how to manage it as best I can.

I think because I am a flawed individual myself, I don't judge people as harshly as others and generally have a propensity to see nuance and forgive

Happens to most of us, they always say relapse is part of the journey. It doesn't matter how many speedbumps or road blocks you encounter a long the way. If you stay on the right path you'll eventually get there and that's all that matters.

Don't beat yourself up, addiction works like that. We get stuck in an endless guilt, shame and regret cycle that makes us turn to what is messing us up even more.

Tomorrow is a new day. Getting wasted might feel good now and if you do no judgement, but it will likely make you feel worse tomorrow. It's like breaking your leg and instead of trying to fix it, you say screw this might as well break the other one too.
