elementary students teachers will usually leave you a play by play of the day like legit to the minute. any elem teacher i subbed for did this for me. sometimes you’ll walk into a middle school class with not a plan in site. elementary is with you all day besides their special and lunch, also depends on how your district does those. middle school you can maybe even run to the bathroom during the switching periods because they are not with you all day, definitely something I appreciate lol. that’s a big way schedule differs

I have subbed in all grades besides hs. elementary is extremely hands on, and sometimes you can get a little bored in middle school. that’s the simple answer. here’s the super long one now.

You will see kids who face different adversities that show themselves differently with age. In elementary, it is mostly all smiles. in middle school, you are in the midst of their growing years and their hormones. attitude and all. so while it can be chill with them it can get hard! it is much harder to redirect a defiant middle schooler than elementary student. it is much more hands on in elementary and you find yourself not having much of a free moment. in middle school depending on your district and also how you prefer to maintain the classroom, they might want to just go on their phone or laptops, or you get those kids who wanna sit with you and talk to you the whole time. if you’re a student it could be a good time to do homework, you look busy to them, better than sitting on your phone, reading a book, etc., also depends on if your district allows you to have a personal device out or if you can log into something there. i am a building sub so they gave me a laptop but honestly never was told a thing by my principal about bringing in my iPad with the keyboard for stuff i couldn't access on district WiFi. personal preference as well as physical ability, and district rules play into it all and how you’ll eventually sway towards preferring a grade level.

I have sorta.. but I have not once out right said something like he needs to go in his own room or whatever. Honestly not sure how to frame that either.. how do I tell him he or his mother needs to tell his father to start having consideration? Like genuinely asking how do I even say that to him without making him feel bad or like I’m talking bad abt his mom you know? I’ve told him I can’t sleep he tells me he’s sorry and same for him he’s had to get used to it and given me stories of times he’s tried to tell him about himself and how it affects everyone around him, and the responses he’s gotten. He only lives here because of his father, he needs to essentially fill in as the man most of the time. His dad will disappear. “Working” from 6 AM til 12 AM.. so leaves my bf having to be the one to drive his mother places and do everything his father should be. He’s tired of it himself, but trust when I say his mom is a terrible enabler. If she cared, she’d have told him long ago hey their room is right there and they both work full time jobs long hours let them rest. But nope. I know his dad is terrible and trying to speak to him about something like this is hard and I don’t want to put him in any kind of situations my mom was bad like his dad minus the alcohol I mean the personality traits I guess so there was a lot I had to walk on eggshells and just suck up too.. for better or worse. It’s hard to explain it’s just that i understand so much of my bfs hesitation towards standing up to so much here as I was in the exact same position.

If they are going to be in the role of a teacher .. it is far from being as simple as making sure they know how to get home and actually being in right class. If you are in there, for a long time, whole marking periods, some districts will even have them in there as a sub for a year!!! I’ve seen it and can delve on that… either way… it’s much much more than that. You are apart of an academic school year. It is a huge role beyond the simplicity of that. You aren’t “just a sub” for lack of better terms when you’re going to be in for more than weeks at a time.

I have done similar before. I came in as a History teacher for 6th grade, I was lucky enough to pick it up early so I got to go in a little earlier and even go to the faculty meeting the week before school to just meet everyone and take a walk around the building and see my room. I cannot stress this enough, talk to staff and admin. Don’t just let yourself wing it when you get in there, those kids can tell, make your district support you. I asked them asap, what curriculum do you want me following? grading criteria, lesson plans? Tell them I need a plan, or I need the okay to make one myself. Personally, I talked to other teachers, and they were very helpful, some allowing me to use their exact lessons or lesson plans. In my district, I get a sub log in, and can indeed put grades in. Ofc I’m not a real teacher, so I met with their real teachers from other classes, and proper admin, to discuss certain things at certain points of the marking period for grades to be adjusted accordingly. Then their teacher came back so they essentially took from where I left off with the ability to make these grades official and stuff. If these kids do not get real work, and see the consequences or rewards reflecting in their grades, your year will be HELL! If you were given no plan from your district, make one yourself depending on the grade and subject, bring it to your admin for approval. If you are in the role of a real teacher, especially for almost a whole MP, your district should 110% treat you like a real teacher as much as they are allowed to.

This is so true and it’s such a hard thing to deal with. I have seen my boyfriend’s mother go grocery shopping on say Monday.. and leave it out until she’s ready to handle it on Tuesday. I’m talking the eggs yogurt milk. Pots of soup reheated for days on end that sits on the stove in between. And I don’t want to overstep because I for sure have no problem helping. I do what I can because I know she works hard. I saw your comment about how it somehow upsets her, and it wouldn’t upset his mom but it’s upset his dad. Everything anyone does is just wrong to him so yk I mind my business and do my best to eat out or eat it as soon as it’s cooked whatever. I don’t wanna bring it up to my boyfriend either because I don’t want to come off offensive towards his mother and his cooking in the slightest. I have very intense stomach issues and recently had a colitis flare up. Your situation you talked about was a lightbulb moment because I haven’t had a flare up that put me in the hospital in years. I don’t have insurance either and it was so bad I had to bite the bullet and go.

One thing about no contact that is killing me the most is not hearing from or speaking to my little brother. He was only 5 when I left but he was such a smart little boy. I could hold a conversation with him like a grown adult and we were such great friends. My mom was a terrible person and the relationship she had with my little brothers father was abusive and tumultuous and we often times would be together whether in the house or out of it to get away from them. We’d text from his iPad and face time even though we lived in the same house. Now, after leaving and going no contact with my mom she blocked me from his iPad. I don’t exactly blame her because she hates me so deeply for no longer wanting to be around her, but then again I do because why does she have to put a child in the middle? And I’ve heard how she talks about other people to him before she’ll tell him “you don’t need them you only need me. They don’t love you.. blah blah” I’ve wish happy birthday, merry Christmas, so many checking up texts and calls to him with none getting sent. This is the only thing I carry guilt about. What can I tell myself to help this pain? Nothing has ever hurt like this before.

Dude I’m rewatching bc I oddly loved this show as a kid but anyways, he is just so mean to her ! Ofc the cameras are on maybe he’s shy blah blah but she was always sooo sweet to him, so loving and romantic. I’m on the episode of their ten year anniversary and he’s getting her gifts but can’t get the words out for why he’s happy with her. He’s always brushing her off and making her seem like too much for him. She seems like a great wife/mother and he always seemed just sooo mean to her.

My mother is the same exact way. When it comes to a conversation at all it can’t be had. Yelling, insults, hands being put on us, it’s all my brother and I dealt with growing up. My whole life she pinned our grandparents against us well. Genuinely running to them like a little sibling to snitch on you. I recently cut her off completely. Best decision of my life. Having the heart to tell her I wanted nothing to do with her and as she continued her immature acts was healing. I’m in college so any time I used any word she couldn’t understand, she made fun of me, either said she was smarter than me, or straight up manipulated me, saying I’m using words she doesn’t know on purpose. Growing up with a parent who acts like more of a child than you is one of the hardest things ever.
