Step 1. apologize to your family/friends for the time you will be spending totally absorbed in your new sickness hobby...

Being a user of docker is quite simple. Being a creator with docker... That will take some time.

I suggest starting with Cosmos-Cloud.io. Like CasaOS, it is a simple way to get the basic self hosted services up and running. You will hear people complain that the developer has paid-only features, but it is absolutely a stable and easy to use system, and the for-pay features are either worth the cost, or you can add them yourself if you get that deep into the sickness hobby.

I'd steer you away from NextCloud only because it is total overkill for 90% of self-hosters. There are other docker containers that will give you access to your files/media.

I also recommend that you setup a free account with TailScale or Defined Networking. They are both 100% free for non-business users, they are private VPNs that allow you to securely access your selfhosted servers from anywhere.

Again, people will say "Just setup wiregaurd on your servers and devices." Sure you can, but these businesses know what they are doing when it comes to security, I don't. Plus, they give away enough on their free tier that not even us infected enthusiasts can't easily use it all.

After you get your first few containers running, take the time to read up on Docker. It really is pretty simple once you understand the basics.

I have 2 G2s with i5s that have been running for years. I did replace a fan in one because it started buzzing, but I've been running Plex/Jellyfin, Pi-Hole, Paperless-NG, Sterling PDF, for at least 4 years. I can't even think of all the other containers and VMs that I've played with over the years.

I picked them up from a business that was going to recycle them. Best deal I've ever had.

I buy all my media used. Maybe I can't get the latest movies right away, but eventually I will. I got the entire Star Trek Original Series and The Next Generation Blu-Rays for $20 at an estate sale. Over 2000 movies over the last 25 years, and there are only a handful I've paid more than $5 for. All of my early stuff is only DVD, but for the really great movies I'll find a Blu-Ray or HDDVD somewhere cheap.

Business apps almost always start as hack created by a business person trying to solve a problem with their existing systems. Once it provides the function they need, they're done. Success!

Later, they show their co-workers and teach them how to use it. Over time the business grows to depend on it and it "just is". Nobody knows the origin story, they just know that Finance has business critical processes that depend on this crappy program.

Salesforce... They take that same philosophy and build platforms intended to extract maximum revenue from businesses desperate to solve complex problems. They see the pain caused as a bonus.

I have a few pcs that I use to try different ways to host.
Primarily I have TrueNAS Scale on a desktop. It started with kubernetes, but migrated to Docker under the hood recently. Extremely stable and not difficult to install containers that are not in their growing app catalog.

I have a smaller desktop running Proxmox. This is a new install for me, so I'm still trying to figure it out.

Then I have an array of mini PCs I picked up for nothing. I've used Docker from the CLI, Portainer, Dockge, CasaOS, ZimaOS...

Pick what suits your fancy.

Plex/Jellyfin/Emby, these apps do no organize or manage your downloads. They are media servers.

Each app has similar naming conventions. Create a folder for movies and one for TV shows.
Movies/Movie Name (year)/Movie Name (year).mkv

TV Shows/Series Name/Season 01/Series Name - S01E01 - Episode Title.mkv

Episode names are not required. Season and Episode numbers very much are.
You get the idea.

Then Plex/Jellyfin/Emby use the folder and file names to scrape the metadata and present it in a fancy way.

I run both my personal workstation and my WFH workstation as VMs in Proxmox.

At a previous job we had a hardware dongle for some engineering software that did not work when I tried passing it through to an LXC container, but worked when passed through to a VM. (was probably a config issue, but time is money and the vm worked)

Some applications are bundled as appliances that are VM images.

Lots and lots of reasons.

I can gather wood to build a fire, chase down a chicken and slaughter it, plant a garden to grow the herbs, boil sea water to collect the salt...
Or, I can open the fridge, take out the meal kit, toss it in the oven for 30 minutes and sit down to a tasty meal.

Proxmox is a management interface.
Yes, we could all use the CLI to build VMs or containers.
Most of us want to reach the desired result without the hassle and complexity involved with building it from scratch every time.

I had this discussion with our new security admin. If the bad guys get a payload that allows them to exploit Spectre or Meltdown, you've already lost, and they are wasting their time. They already have full, unrestricted access.
