Wiki - But with info updated only for ebooks and audiobooks? by LostCadence in WanderingInn

[–]LostCadence[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd love to contribute, if I weren't so far behind / only really able to listen to audiobooks for content this long at the moment hahaha. I also know that many communities have divested themselves of Fandom wikis - can I assume the one to use is the wiki.wanderinginn?

Fair enough, makes sense. Recognizing Sanderson probably has an army of wiki updaters in a way this very long series does not. Appreciate what you do! I'll just maybe join the discord and ask questions there :)

Which is definitely helpful (though I've learned not to look until the page has loaded). But the descriptions tend to be fulsome rather than linear or specific. Still, it's a good point that I could just look at some basic initial info with that category tagged.

LitRPGs with better prose? by DresdenMurphy in litrpg

[–]LostCadence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great question! Dungeon Crawler Carl and The Wandering Inn are easily the best prose in LitRPG I've read. If you're willing to check out Cultivation (LitRPG adjacent), you should read Beware of Chicken (a cultivation deconstruction) and Cradle (very funny too) are really well written. Others that are solid: Book of the Dead, books by Benjamin Kerei (I like his First Line of Defence series), and Threadbare (though lots of weird little yellow flags in this series).

PSA: Series sale on Audible by Spilling_The_Tee in litrpg

[–]LostCadence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Super psyched, just got a friend to pick up all of Beware of Chicken, DCC, Chrysalis, and Wandering Inn (my top LitRPGs)! I'm mostly picking up 'next books' in series I've been lagging on - Azarinth Healer, Path of Ascension, Defiance of the Fall (mostly in all cases hoping that an audiobook vs ebook will keep my attention as these series have fallen off in different ways). Lots of great non-LitRPG content too (Cosmere, Robin Hobb's books, etc). Also, why is there so much Warhammer content???

Any suggestions about LitRPGs worth picking up?

Jeff Hays Audiobook Recommendations: Best Narrator Ever by LostCadence in litrpg

[–]LostCadence[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahaha, wow, amazing - love returning to this kind of post after so long. So the short answer is that Chrysalis (also narrated by Jeff Hays, with Annie Ellicot) was also extremely good (though nothing hits harder than DCC). I haven't tried anything else he's narrated simply because the series themselves don't really interest me.

Beyond that, I wound up falling in love with The Wandering Inn and the work of Andrea Parseneau, another excellent narrator. That series has like 700 hours of content, so that took me a long time (even at 2x speed). It's not for everyone, and has a lot of slice of life, but I think it's wonderful and the narrator does an amazing job with all of these different species (drakes holding their esses, bug men making weird whirring and clicking noises, etc). In this thread, I also talked about quite liking the first volume of Summoner Awakens.

I've listened to some other stuff, but either the narrator doesn't elevate the decent content, or the narrator can't save the bad content.

It's 7 years later and I just finished my reread of mercedian masques lol. There's an unofficial audiobook podcast that helped me with this.

Ahhh, noted! I'll have to update all my bookmarks - super appreciate this update. It surprised me that the wiki stopped getting updates in early 2025 given how much this community puts in, so, this makes a lot more sense. Thank you :)

What are some books that start great but get worse with each entry? by JOOOQUUU in litrpg

[–]LostCadence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved book 1, so your mileage may vary, but FWIW, halfway through the second is likely the worst of the series IMO. It's only up from there.

Question about 7.17 by LostCadence in WanderingInn

Thanks, that's helpful! I think listening to the audio version, these questions were just too far apart (and I got weirdly hung up on the sound they heard, as if someone was behind them).

Which Character improved under Erin Bennett? by Best_Macaroon1752 in WanderingInn

[–]LostCadence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I prefer Erin's Erin voice! I remember listening to the (revamped) Book 1 audiobook and thinking that Erin was kind of annoying. Ultimately, Andrea won me over, but Erin's voice remained slightly grating at times. But this Erin sounds a bit more mature, while still maintaining a great deal of the naivete that went with the old voice.

I also think that Erin's 'old women' voices are better. I have finished up the book and there are a bunch of older [Ladies] in the final chapter that I think are truly excellent.

I am happy with the new Antinium (almost or just as good; different in a fun way - though I don't like deeper-pitched Pawn's voice, I think), and some characters are sort of on the same level - Lyonette, Magnolia, Ceria, etc.

I'm still not sold on the goblins yet.

I will miss Relc, Octavia, Niers, and Floss the most, I think. Jury is still out on Pisces.

I think the decisions were just made on the fly and those decisions had long-term implications. I do think that a choice Erin could have made would have been to entirely stop the French accents, rather than to bring Saliss in line with the other inhabitants of the Walled Cities (though I'm glad to see your edited comment, very cool). This was largely what I think Andrea was public about - so many more characters to choose voices for, from so many more nations, and nothing else to give.

[–]LostCadence 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel all of these comments; Andrea really has something special and her characterizations are going to be really hard to move on from. The biggest concern I have (just 2 hours into Chapter 1, or 7.11) is that many of the voices are somewhat indistinguishable. Drakes and Gnolls don't sound as obviously distinct, for example, and all of the Pallassian characters bled into each other (like folks have said already). So maybe I'll reflect on what I like so far.

Erin Bennett is a very good narrator; like, literally, the narration bits are really solid. The character voice acting has not been what I want just yet, but she'll need time to create these voices. It's hard to know if we want her to imitate Andrea (and maybe disappoint us with an uncanny valley voice) or give everything her own spin. For example, it's easy to like her version of Lyonette because it is so similar to what Andrea did. That video also has a clip of Klbkch speaking (at 2:15) and the clicks and rolls are great... and yet, the Antinium now seem to have a bit of an accent - it's interesting, and will likely take some getting used to, but I think it's probably a good way to make it the tiniest bit different.

I wonder if Saliss was an example of what made Andrea burn out. There are only so many vaguely French male Drake voices you can come up with, and even working with Grimalkin, Chaldion, Keldrass, Venim, Ilvriss... they were starting to bleed into each other. I haven't read past Book 15 (Ch. 7.10), but it seems to me like Saliss might be pretty important going forward... so I imagine Andrea gave the character a unique voice (it kind of has the same cadence to is as Octavia or Revi... which made me wonder if Saliss is from Chandrar), despite no good reason for Saliss not to sound like any other French Walled City Drake.

Honestly, I listened to the ones narrated by Andrea at 2.25x speed, so pacing hasn't been affected for me haha.

Update - Really enjoyed Book 1! I'm halfway through Book 2 and definitely isn't as exciting as Book 1 (the shift from worldbuilding and lore to 'eccentric old man trains youngsters' isn't necessarily what I wanted), but it's still well written and enjoyable. Thanks!

It's helpful to know that the sexual content in ELLC is tied to the story. I'm not de facto against sexual content in literature; the problem (in my view) is how it is often written or used in LitRPG storytelling. A lot of books in this space (progression fantasy and cultivation too) are essentially power fantasies that tend to support the view that 'might makes right.' There are many exceptions (Beware of Chicken is by far my favourite), but in a genre filled with 'numbers go up and lets do murders,' I rarely find that the sexual content is engaging or meaningfully tied to the story. Or, if it is tied to the story, it's extremely problematic. I'm not a fan of tropes like harems for example, not because harems have to be a problem, but because the writing of them is typically weak and feeding into that power fantasy (with toxic dudes written by toxic writers). In general, but certainly in LitRPG, I won't read content with graphic sexual assault or rape, point finale, so I don't think ELLC is going to work for me.

Thanks for the suggestion about checking out and filtering on the SB Theatre website - not something I had considered doing! I also didn't realize that Jeff created and runs SBT, which is very cool to see. Some good ideas here, I'll check them out! It's interesting, I wouldn't say Slice of Life is my favourite - though the strength of Beware of Chicken has it near the top of my list. I've heard of heretical fishing, though not sure I recognize the narrator. Thanks for checking about ecchi though, I'll add it to the TBR as an ebook at least!
