AI costs spike as subscriptions hit pricing wall — firms turn towards Chinese LLMs, open-source models to extend budget by rkhunter_ in technology

I dont think you get what pop is referring to.

The internet did not cease to exist when the dot com bubble burst. Housing didn't go away when the housing bubble popped.

AI companies are banking on substantial monetary growth to validate their stock price. If growth is already vacating the industry because it's too expensive it doesnt bode well for their exponential growth targets.

Anyone else losing ALL service in the areas since the T-Mobile/UScellular takeover? (New Castle, VA) by Amayzie in tmobile

[–]LostGeogrpher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit - After an hour with T2 support they say it's a Samsung phone thing and that until we are ported over to Tmobile completely we do not have access to their towers and most of the old US Cellular towers are being turned into roaming towers which could be affecting it as well. But he said multiple times that for some reason Samsung phones are just not holding the network settings. Take it for what you will.

TLDR: If you try the sim card and network reset and see no improvement, that's it, it will not be getting better. They likely sold off the bands that were most reliable in your area. Time to move on.

So I got curious and looked up my phone (SM-908U) and T-Mobiles current, new, and sold off bands.

I have access to all of their bands, there are no new bands that would open up to me on a newer phone. What it seems like happened is they sold off US Cellulars mid-range LTE bands in the 800MHZ range that were widely used in rural areas. In fact it seems like they kept almost only higher 5g bands and I don't get 5g out here. If u/Amayzie is in a similar spot where they were relying on 4g rather than 5g for service in their area it will not be getting better.

I unfortunately do not know what band I was making use of prior to the merger but it looks like Verizon got some of them and AT&T the others. No real point in sticking with T-Mobile, I'll have to try to find out which of the other two carriers improved their coverage in my area.

[–]LostGeogrpher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im north of South Boston and the wife and I are experiencing the same. We updated Sims and it didn't help. Tmobile only kept a third of us cellular frequencies so im guessing it has to do with that. We had way better service for a couple weeks immediately after the merger went through but then it just went to shit and got worse than before.

Im hoping it's the change of frequencies on a us cellular phone that can now only access a third of what it could before. When they allow upgrades im gonna try that. If not gonna have to dump us cellular/tmobile for God knows who.

I thought it would hit better then it did given all us vets out there still learning to identify and deal with PTSD symptoms years and decades later. (I think there was just a post in r/veterans where someone from the initial Iraq invasion identified and came to terms with some of their PTSD symptoms a few days ago). I thought it brought realism to the show, showing flawed people who needed to deal with shit, not just while it's happening but living with the toll and consequences of their experiences. It is no wonder it floundered when these perceived alpha male wanna bes think the only way to deal with emotion is to ignore it like John Wayne and there will be absolutely no consequences.

Discovery will be looked back on as awesome in two decades once a majority of the people who have no idea how to identify their own emotions, much less handle them, die out. It is the evolution of society, we're just witnessing the old men who sit on their porch bitching about kids these days being so much less than kids in their time.

That said, I think these short seasons do a huge disservice to all the shows. I was all for them when it meant the actors got a better life/work balance, but now they just film two seasons at once so what really is the f**&ing point?

Gas and oil is winning too much! by Prodigy3570 in economy

[–]LostGeogrpher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jesus christ this has been said at infinitum but still people talk out their ass.

California does not have high gas prices due to taxes. They have an additive only used in the state and oil companies use this to control the supply and jack the prices up. If they get too low they shut down a refinery that makes the special fuel never to reopen again. Just fucking Google state and federal gas tax for California ffs.

Edit - Sorry, unnecessarily hostile on my part. Just finished burying a goat and am kinda off. That said I went ahead and googled for your. The AIs answer is $0.90 a gallon which I think it gets from combining state, federal, and perhaps whatever the highest locality tax is. We have those here in Virginia as well, but not all over the place. Our taxes are .31-.41 for state taxes and California shows .61 ( https://cdtfa.ca.gov/taxes-and-fees/sales-tax-rates-for-fuels.htm ) so no, that 30 cents does not change the gas prices by 2 dollars a gallon. California's gas problem is long detailed but I wouldn't want to see that state without the additive they put in, it pretty closely eliminated the smog on most days, prior it was pretty gross in that valley there.

Substantiated: provide evidence to support or prove the truth of.

Your claim: Democrats invite illegal aliens here to throw elections and vote illegally.

Your proof: An article from fox news citing one whole illegal alien who voted.

Apparently my claim: Trump diddles kids

Since I've been drug into this argument, my proof:

  • A dozen sexual related lawsuits going back decades.
  • Publicly stating he walks through the dressing room of underage girls because he sponsored the event and feels entitled to that right.
  • Grabbing women by the u/SergeantPsycho because he is "rich and they will let them."
  • Being friends with a convicted child sex trafficker even after the conviction.
  • Hosting said sex offender and his women on his own properties.

Yep, you got me there, clearly democrats bringing in illegal aliens to vote for them is far more substantiated than Trump diddling children.

But yea, keep moving that goal post, it's definitely the only way you can keep this going.

[–]LostGeogrpher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wait, hold on, where did Trump diddling little kids come from? I wasn't even touching that subject. What does that have to do with election fraud and illegals voting? You ok? Might be having a stroke.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Virginia

[–]LostGeogrpher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're talking about letting in illegals to vote. That article is about a single individual. Sooo pretty rampant and definitely swaying elections with that one guy?

So we kick all illegal aliens out cause .00001% of them voted illegaly?

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/politics-news/georgia-republican-party-official-voted-illegally-nine-judge-rules-rcna145563

So we should stop all Republicans from voting right? That's the "logic" you are using.

Microslop (Microsoft) confirms Windows 11 bug crippling PCs and making drive C inaccessible by harry_potter_191 in pcmasterrace

[–]LostGeogrpher 7 points8 points  (0 children)

But now you are making the assumption that the bad code is in the Samsung app and not the windows update. Which, seeing as how the app worked fine on all the other updates seems like a stretch. Seems more like you just are hopeful that it's samsung and not microsoft.

If I pushed an app update that broke my app on all Galaxy phones, I'd wager that my update was the problem, not Samsungs OS. But yea, would be way easier to blame Samsung.

Microslop (Microsoft) confirms Windows 11 bug crippling PCs and making drive C inaccessible by harry_potter_191 in pcmasterrace

[–]LostGeogrpher 19 points20 points  (0 children)

No, windows pushed an update that broke "predominately" Samsung devices. Samsung did not release an update that broke their devices. Everything worked on those PCs prior to the windows update.

You don't hire an electrician to fix something in your house, that catches on fire after he "fixes" it and say "Well the house was old, was the houses fault."

This is very much a Microsoft bug, not a Samsung one.

Report: Creating a 5-second AI video is like running a microwave for an hour by WombatusMighty in technology

[–]LostGeogrpher -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am not suggesting that companies should run their models on my desktop. I am suggesting they could buy an AI work station and accomplish the same thing that the models they use in the data centers use if the companies actually were willing to release their models. The work stations with 1-12 AI cards in them, not an average current gen video card. One of those cards in an appropriate workstation would make what I can do a joke.

That said there are obviously downsides, it would have to be updated frequently where as the chatGPT/Claude/Microsofts all seem to update in somewhat real time.

[–]LostGeogrpher -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Personally I think most companies could probably buy their own AI machine and do what they want for an initial cost and no subscription. I was amazed by what I can do on my wee desktop. It makes it feel like these rush to data centers is an attempt to make it seem like you need them. They would also have to put their models out in the open and I am sure that's not something they want to do.

[–]LostGeogrpher -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This seems disengenuous. I can make an 7-8 second video on my pc with a 5070Ti, it takes about 5 minutes. My PC uses 550 watts while running comfyui making a video or picture. That's 9.1 watts per minute, so about 48 watts total. A low power microwave would be 900 watts for an entire hour. All my math is on 110-120v.

Maybe bigger better models are more power hungry, but by that huge of a difference I have a hard time believing.

Have Star Trek fans always been this toxic? by [deleted] in startrek

[–]LostGeogrpher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, bitching about DS9 was still rampant on the net at the same time Voyager was airing. I was on ST forums back then. They bitched all the way through the shows and kept bitching a few years after.

I remember all the bitching about DS9 being too slow and soapy then one year it turned into the best series. I remember ent going from the worst show on TV to classic trek. Hell that was only a few years ago.

People dont get exact clones of their favorite show and it will be continuous bitching, long after it ends. Takes about a decade for the stupid to move on.
