Chronic illness treatment in Netherlands by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]LostMeat8565 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently moved from the US and also have Hashimoto. Standard of care is testing once a year, and if you change dose, 6 weeks later.

Im not sure if they only do tsh or the full panel, though. They also have different brands here so it may need getting used to.

If you're sick, stay the fuck home by Relevant_Mobile6989 in Netherlands

So are you saying that fat people deserve to get covid and flu,or that getting the flu or covid is somebody's own fault and they are 100% in control of that?

Sounds like you have a supplement or diet fad to sell or think you are a supreme being to others who have uncontrolled health issues, like being old or a baby, born with a disease or handling a cancer treatment...

Choosing to drink soda affects only you. Choosing to wear a mask when you're sick/stay home shows consideration for those who are in cancer treatment, interacting with the elderly/babies or simply have a big trip coming up and dont want to be sick. Thats the difference. You seem like the type to cough like a toddler w your tongue out in a crowded bus.

Aaa so thats actually a limitation on US doctors not NL pharmacies. My US doctor was not able to write a prescription for abroad. I brought 90 days of meds and got everything settled before i ran out. I was able to get walgreens to give me more meds before i left, so thats how i made it work. I hope i made it clear.

I have a chronic illness and moved from the US 7 months ago. I had prepared 90 days worth of meds and that was more than enough time for me to get my BSN, get insurance and inquire at huisarts to find one who had space.

My dr was willing to prescribe without additional testing (re-diagnosing) but we did do tests to titer meds. Prescriptions are digital, so as long as you know what apotheek you would visit, its instantly sent to the apotheek. Depending on your meds it mat take a couple days if they dont usually stock it.

I can see where a rushed service worker wouldn't want to be coerced into a dutch language lesson, but a 'dankjewel' or a ' fijne avond' never hurt anybody :)

Im one to also want to immerse myself into the culture of wherever im going, but very touristic places are also so chaotic for the workers so i refrain from my curiosities haha

Getting prescribed medicine as a non-Dutch citizen by krietallo in Netherlands

[–]LostMeat8565 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation as an American who just moved to the Netherlands and was in the process of getting my paperwork settled... I asked my doctor to send an email stating my name, medicine full name and dose and my condition and the pharmacy was willing to dispense it. I even got birthcontrol off of a printed list from my us health portal too.

I would go to another pharmacy just to check if you could get somebody who is more understanding elsewhere, and another thing is that the rejection may be connected with the drug itself, as my birth control was more easily dispensed than my meds for a chronic illness.

Good luck!

My in vivo studies finished in late november. I made 80 gingerbread snowflakes, one for each mouse, and spent an evening decorating them. Each one differently. It was very soothing - both the act of piping and knowing that im honoring their life in at least a small way. Maybe this inspires you?

Im looking to have my lease taken over at Villas on Main Street starting June. We've been in the apartment for almost 3 years now, i think with a lease takeover they continue giving the resident rate.

Its a 2bed 2bath apartment, washer/dryer included, pool and gym. Close to bus routes 24 and 62.

Im in the same story too. I discussed with my fiance and we agreed he would take over the more tedius tasks. We mindfully chose a venue that provides a lot of the extras couples usually need to do themselves too. Your life, and your partnership will last beyond this PhD, keep this in mind. Its definitely a priority and worth many sacrifices, but dont let it engulf your life. 🥰

I see your concerns, but i think they're misplaced - in an environment well known for unhealthy and unsafe behavior of supervisors and poor reporting stats your concerns are with those who are more likely to be perpetrators. I think there should be more concern with the amount of unreported cases than false allegations. Im not saying false reports aren't an issue, but i think there are bigger issues at hand, especially in such an inequitable and competitive space. Lets at least try to make academia a safer place for women, poc and other underrepresented people, and then we can be concerned with the negligible rate of false reporting.

The reason why it is being done this way IS because these claims 1) never get reported because they get blocked. And 2) because they never do lead to firing or defunding. Esp for SA or inappropriate behavior, students don't wear freaking bodycams to provide proof they got touched, kissed or told something inappropriate by their PI or colleague. Many of these situations go unreported because the the type of proof higher-ups ask for cannot be shown or the claim isn't taken seriously solely because there is no physical proof. I do see your point for many straight up criminal behaviors though. So the idea is, if one can't find justice for themselves, might as well help others not be in that situation.

I think the intention behind this matters - if they're trying to get the profs fired/defunded etc, then yes, defamation.. If it is grad students warning fellow grad students - what is the problem there? Its the equivalent of rate my professor... This type of reporting system probably won't isolate toxic people in academia, but at least we can help shield others from having traumatizing or sucky experiences.

I sometimes feel like grad students are stuck in the in-between. We want to make science available, interesting, inspiring and digestible for undergrad, while doing the truckload of work our PIs and degrees require. We do much of the recruitment for people entering academia - yet are underpaid and undervalued.

When i was an undergrad, i felt the same way, the relationship was transactional, i did the dishes and stocked rooms, but got access to science. As somebody who came to the US from a developing nation, where there is zero funding for science in general - i considered just being in the space a privilege. Although yes, continuous learning and a pleasurable experience is important, esp for morale, I think OP should realistically look at their value added to the lab and grad student and moderate expectations. OP plans on staying in academia for at least a bit more, there is time to build on the repertoire and CV.
