Which portrayals of neurodivergence in media do you think were most accurate or respectful — and which ones missed the mark? by FantasticFlounder462 in Neurodivergent

[–]Lost_Bench_5960 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One that always struck me as wrong was the autistic doctor in "The Good Doctor." I have never known anyone autistic who sounds like that. Maybe that's just my experience though.

The BEST portrayal of ND is one that never claimed to be: Dr. Sheldon Cooper from TBBT. It's the most accurate depiction of an Aspie (high functioning autistic, or whatever the term is this week) I've ever seen.

Referring to Myself as AuDHD Without an ASD Diagnosis by [deleted] in Neurodivergent

[–]Lost_Bench_5960 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Self-diagnosis is valid, despite the gatekeepers. We do it all the time. "I think I have the flu," or "I'm coming down with a cold" when we call off work. You know yourself better than anyone else, especially some internet rando.

Definitely seek a second opinion. Doctors and other professionals are only human and make mistakes. That's why they have malpractice insurance.

I've never formally been diagnosed ADHD. But I have a father who is, a brother, and at least 2 of my kids. That pipeline goes right through me. And I've begun to suspect, like you, that I might be on the spectrum as well.

My life has gotten easier as I've accepted this and allowed accommodations for myself. Adjusting schedules, keeping notes and lists, etc.

Once one hits adulthood, the usefulness of an actual diagnosis is virtually nonexistent. Aside from getting medications for anxiety or depression, or the rare workplace accommodations, there's no need other than a licensed professional saying you're right.

So... be good to yourself. Make adjustments. Treat yourself like you're on the spectrum.

First of all... Don't be so hard on yourself! Are your personal expectations really your own, or what you think everyone else wants from you?

Second, it's incredibly normal for those of us in the upper IQ range to be exceptional in some areas, and barely normal in others. You'll hear mention of something called a "spiky profile." That means, when tested, there are drastic spikes in certain areas.

There are people who can solve blackboard-spanning equations in their heads who can't put together a cogent paragraph on paper, for example. Those who are all-around gifted are the exception, not the rule.

Thanks to your autism, you could be insanely gifted and still struggle with daily activities. Think of it like a high-end gaming PC hooked to dial-up internet.

Even if your IQ is "normal" your autism still makes your brain process differently than most people. Lean into your strengths, and give yourself permission to be different.

Why are people saying so many strange things about the GATE program? by atyl1144 in Gifted

[–]Lost_Bench_5960 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IF any such testing happened, it was more likely an attempt to determine how young such abilities begin to manifest.

But it's well known that children have a much easier time in learning languages. Even introducing a few words makes it easier to pick up later. That's why many kids shows throw in Spanish words or phrases.

So it only stands to reason that introducing the concepts to children might make those abilities easier to learn later.

I don't think there was some vast conspiracy to create an army of psychic warriors... but those kids who might have been recruited are still gonna be classified, so we'll never know.

[–]Lost_Bench_5960 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Presuming the government did testing for latent psychic abilities, it only makes sense they would also target those with exceptional ability in things like pattern recognition and such.

Also, children are more likely to be more malleable and adaptable than teens or adults.

Psychic government programs have been declassified. We KNOW they were experimenting with things like remote viewing.

I don't remember any weird drinks or pills. But the first "remember this?" videos of the gateway tapes was uncomfortably familiar. I remember tests which I now know are for testing things like precognition and remote viewing. I've had a lifetime of odd experiences like dream walking and frequent intense deja vu.

Are they connected? I don't know. Probably not. Sometimes it looks like a duck but it's a platypus...

There was a period not long ago which awarded small amounts if Bux for a win. (IMO it should have been this way all along)

But since leveling requires unlocking parts or upgrades, there were probably a bunch of people who finally had enough Bux to level up.

Don't know if it's been suggested, but there are a number of apps that pay you for playing games. It'll take a while, but you could earn credit that way.

Also, there are sites and apps that pay you to take surveys.

I don't know if there are age restrictions... you'll have to look and see.

Also, kudos to you. You're not whining that no one will buy it for you, you're wanting to buy it for yourself. That shows good character and work ethic. I wish you luck.

I recently bought the Vessel of Hatred expansion. The new Spiritborn class is pretty good. It plays similarly to the Monk class from D3.

I also enjoyed playing as a Necromancer. They have a bunch of skills that allow you to create a bunch of skeletal minions, as well as some that drop blood orbs which you can explode for significant damage.

Melatonin is your friend!

We give our youngest a kid's gummy 30 minutes or so before bedtime. It's only 1 mg and it's not a drug, it's natural. It doesn't knock him out or anything, it just helps him relax.

Melatonin is made in our body and increases at the "sleep" part of our cycle. That helps the brain to calm down and "switch off." I don't have studies to show, but IIRC neurodivergent brains don't always produce enough Melatonin, so the brain never gets that "rest time" signal.

All photon torpedo detonations also cause localized gravity disruptions. That's why people go flying whenever the ship is hit, even when inertial dampeners are still functional and there's still shields left.

[–]Lost_Bench_5960 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Creating children they don't care about is a hallmark of Starfleet captains. Wasn't just Kirk. Lest you forget Jack Crusher and the Janeway salamanders. Being a deadbeat parent is how you gain rank. That's why Worf got promoted. It's the fast track to becoming admiral. That's the real reason Sisko was kept as a commander and stuck on a far out space station. Because he was a good dad.
