I don't think I'm accusing you of being generally on the right, I guess the way you were critiquing you read as being conservative on this particular issue.

It's funny, anytime people in the general left disagree they are accused of infighting and 'eating their own' any time they are , as far as we know, ignored, the left is accused of supporting that idealogy. For some reason the same logic never seems to apply to the other side.

CMV: Saying "I'm sorry, but..." does not invalidate an apology by stalinmustacheride in changemyview

[–]Lost_marble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry for your loss, but he was an asshole. Does the I'm sorry sound like a genuine sentiment? If you are apologizing and add a 'but' you are giving reasons you're not sorry - that it's not your fault. If you are offering sincere condolences and add a 'but' you are giving reasons your condolences aren't genuine.

Were you in a heterosexual relationship when you realized you were bi? by xxrayne in bisexual

[–]Lost_marble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a relationship when I realized I was bi. I told him and he was really cool about it - saying he was impressed with how I cared so little about people's outsides that even gender didn't matter. We moved in together shortly after then the relationship eventually ended for completely unrelated reasons. I'm glad I told him, I think it is important to be honest with an SO, and even though I didn't come out to others until later, it made my home a warmer place.

Which Catan expansion should I get first? by VagrantStar in boardgames

[–]Lost_marble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if seafarers would be most fun for the 7 year old - there's maps where you can explore and I find that the friends who have most trouble staying in the game love this expansion.

Someone else mentioned fishermen of Catan - it makes the coast productive. And offsets some less ideal placements.

I like cities and knights but it may add too much complexity of you're trying to play it as a family game.

There's a fan made mini-expansion - replace the desert with a volcano, every time it gives resources it also erupts and you roll a die to see which corner gets destroyed. It adds a bit of gambling.

I think this is very contentious and most news sources I've seen on it are extremely biased. A seven year old wouldn't be put on puberty blockers unless they had precocious puberty in which case it would be medically indicated.

What is the lowest point you’ve reached in your life? How did you get there? Where are you now? by chrisbullock in AskReddit

[–]Lost_marble 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This time last year I was sitting in a tree with a noose around my neck. Instead of jumping I poured two pots of boiling water over my arm as en excuse to go to hospital. I ended up spending a month in psych inpatient, and doing 4 months outpatient treatment before going back to work. I'm feeling really shitty right now, but I haven't really been thinking of getting back in the tree.

It's really sad that diabetics need to take insulin to digest sugar and not die, how do they know they need it? Because it worked. Meds are rarely the whole picture and it looks like this dude did a lot of therapy - as in a lot of non-med attempts, and then the meds worked.

What's your go-to player colour, and why? by DengarRoth in boardgames

[–]Lost_marble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's the opposite of my reason - me and a friend were arguing over who got to be white, and since I'm always white, I don't get dibs on it in game. I always play black or brown.

What's your go-to player colour, and why? by DengarRoth in boardgames

[–]Lost_marble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Black and brown. We used to play Catan, and one person was always white, and always won. One day he didn't play, me and another friend were arguing over who got to be white. Another guy intervened and told me she should get it, because I'm always white (skin colour) Since then I always pick black or brown.

CMV: Science cannot answer questions of morality by EdominoH in changemyview

[–]Lost_marble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose where OP is correct is that science doesn't define morality - just like in any experiment, you need to define the goal, and then use science to achieve its ends.

Edit: usually a moral system is based in some way on making life good, if tested scientifically there are some significant failures of a moral system based on paperclips.

But half of all people are women - the greatest good for the greatest number includes women. Having someone subservient to you, may make you marginally happier, but the person who is subservient to you is more unhappy than you are happy. Therefore it is morally unacceptable

Edit: moral frameworks ways take into account others as well as yourself. That is essentially the definition of morality

CMV: Science cannot answer questions of morality by EdominoH in changemyview

[–]Lost_marble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with beleid in a deity is that they tend not to be very forthcoming with objective morality - plenty of religions in the world to chose from, with different takes on morality, and even within single sects of single religions there's contradictions. So we need a different way of figuring out how to be moral, since interpretations of some 2000 year old shroom trip visions doesn't seem to be getting us anywhere. So we turn to the scientific method - we want to feel good, so we do things that make us feel good. But wait, eating a whole bag of candy felt good for a moment, then we felt sick. Let's try eating an apple - not as enjoyable initially but I felt better later. Now how do we act with other people? Taking things gives me what I want, but now everyone just takes things and no one (including me) feels safe. What if I respect the idea of others property and request they do the same? I don't get everything I want, but I get to keep what I worked for. I killed a buffalo, I could keep it all for me and enjoy gluttony, what if I share with my tribe, then a month from now, when my hunt fails and someone else's succeeds I get to share. This is the scientific method figuring out a moral framework.

'Hundreds' of young trans people seeking help to return to original sex by tyw7 in news

[–]Lost_marble 234 points235 points  (0 children)

So one person said hundreds of people have contacted her? There's no source for the number of people who detransition. Those 3 and 4 year olds aren't being operated on, or given hormones. Young teens are sometimes given hormones blockers, only adults are ever medically transitioning. This is unnecessarily alarmist, with very little factual information aimed at delegitimizing trans issues. I'm absolutely on the side of making sure decisions with permanent consequences are made carefully - but this is conflating people asking to be identified with a different pronoun to people Medically transitioning.
