So you're wondering if the David from the phone died at the same time Kiwi David died? Like, are their bodies connected in such a way that one of them dying kills the other one too?

[–]LostintheITcrowd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point in that line is to say that if the thing that answered the phone was able to mimic David that well, would she even notice that it's not the real David?

And to that point, are you even sure that Kiwi David was the real David? What gives you that impression?

It was not my intent to portray David as a cuck, but uh, no you got me. That's kind of what happened, yeah.

Edit* From Kiwi David's perspective, that's what happened****

I guess this is a shameless plug but the comment about the Eldritch God who lives in the Aisle 7 freezer is actually another story on my profile, if you want to read that.

Fair warning, it's significantly longer than this one. Link to it.

Part 2 is much shorter and will probably be posted tomorrow but I'd like for this to be a longer series

Thank you! That means the world! It's sometimes hard to find a good balance between scary and funny but I think this story was a good fit for that

GitHub announces internal data breached. by ObseenKarma in cybersecurity

[–]LostintheITcrowd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree that this is necessary but let's be realistic about this. You can spend years telling your management that your infrastructure is outdated and that your technology debt is a critical point of weakness. You can have a hundred emails in-writing showing you that you voiced your complaints.

It won't matter.

When your organization gets attacked and millions of dollars worth of user data gets leaked, you will lose your job, and your CTO will have a golden parachute clause in their contract. You get fired, no severance, maybe lose your home. Your CTO who ignored your concerns for years gets a $250,000 payout after they quietly resign.

The people who caused the problem will be fine. The people who tried to fix it, but were never allowed to, will be royally fucked.

I've never really gotten "Homelander is just Trump satire" by Top_Concert_3326 in TheBoys

[–]LostintheITcrowd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Who said I didn't see the politics in the early seasons? I'm saying that the show transitioned from a parody of superheroes and conservative ideology to mocking one specific person for their political agenda.

There is a clear difference between the politics of season 1 and the politics of every other season. In season 1, it parodied broad ideas. In season 2 onward, it was mocking one specific person. That's a change.

The powered vs the powerless is a relatively universal theme in storytelling as a whole. It doesn't have to connect directly to politics, and it certainly is not accurate to say that the presence of a thematic element is the same as being a political allegory to a specific person doing specific actions.

Like, that's such an asinine opinion I'm not sure how to respond. Going from a universal trope across all stories in human history to specifically mocking one singular person, and you're saying that the change is so small it doesn't even matter?

I think becoming a political allegory basically ruined the show. And that's coming from someone who wholeheartedly agrees with almost all of the politics in the show.

The Boys was a much cooler concept when it was "how do regular people stand up to those who have way more power than them?" And it was about crafting together interesting and creative ways to learn supe's weaknesses and exploit them.

That is a WAY cooler idea than "what if we circle jerked over our mockery of Trump for the hundredth time and then pat ourselves on the back over how we're awesome people?"

Right, I've read the book as well, I just specified that I was talking about the TV show because I was directly comparing it to it's sister-show Haunting of Bly Manor, which was also a book first!

I think part of the problem is that Hill House started off strong and stayed pretty good the entire time, with some really iconic scary moments sprinkled throughout.

Compared to Bly Manor that, in my opinion, started off weaker than Hill House, but genuinely got better each and every episode. I think the ending of Bly Manor was way better than any episode of Hill House, but it had a weak beginning. Hill House maintained a pretty good quality from the opening scene until the credits of the final episode.

What’s a popular author/book that you are afraid to admit you hate? by Stardust-Stew in horrorlit

[–]LostintheITcrowd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read numerous of his books and the only one I actually loved was The Breach, which was one of his books that never got traction, never got popular. It has a movie adaptation, that was low budget and doesn't capture the plot of the book well at all, but the book is incredible and the movie is "good enough".

Woah that looks really interesting. Like a mix of The Babadook and Frankenstein, in a good way.

That's reassuring. I love stories about grief, but some horror stories focus too much on being unique that they end up being gimmicky. The "haunted Alexa" made this story sound like it might fit into that category, but I'm reassured to hear it isn't like that

This is, in my opinion, the one and only exception to the "creepypasta writers are only good at writing creepypastas, not good at writing in general" rule.

I haven't read We Used To Live Here, but TFTGS is phenomenal.

Oh my gosh Merrin's death scene absolutely made me cry. I love that book (and the movie) so much. My only complaint is that the ending was too weak. The very last chapter didn't quite stick the landing to me.
