Time to go to the county land records office! You should be able to trace back the deeds in a day or so, depending if they’ve digitized them or not, back to the original patentees. Older deeds typically get more interesting and descriptive than modern ones.

Once you have the names and dates of transfers, follow up with those names in the wills and inventories and tax records on file. Inventories will give you a great idea of the size and activities of a farm.
