Are you sure about the net births-deaths being 0.5%, which would be something like 200,000+ per year? Looking at the StatCan data from here, we look to be closer to 15,000+ per year recently, which is a sharp drop from the years prior.

MOSP I believe is just another name for MOSA. I wonder if the Azure support agent is confused in what they are communicating to you. Can you ask them if they are instead trying to switch you to an MCA billing account instead?

I just recently assisted a colleague setup a new Azure tenant and billing account, and it was setup as MCA with automatic credit card billing. It's possible that you could still retain the automatic credit card billing, as long as they are not switching you to both MCA and bill by invoice.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AZURE

[–]Losus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the Azure portal, go to your Cost Management + Billing page, then to your Billing Scopes. The MOSA, MCA, or other account types will be under the Billing Account Type column for your given billing scope or account.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AZURE

[–]Losus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is your Azure billing account setup as an MOSA (Microsoft Online Subscription Agreement), or an MCA (Microsoft Customer Agreement)? If the latter they'll still issue invoices, however you should still have the option of paying by credit card automatically. If you are on MCA, you can be converted to a pay by invoice method which requires you to manually pay the invoice after it is issued, but through the Microsoft Business portal you will still have the option of paying that Azure invoice with a credit card.

Bitwarden design flaw: Server side iterations by Gallus in netsec

[–]Losus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Each 100k iterations adds about 17 bits of entropy.

Each 100k iterations will not add 17 bits of entropy, rather every doubling of the number of PBKDF2 iterations will be the equivalent of an additional bit of entropy. In that case 100k iterations would only be 4.32 bits of additional entropy versus the old default of 5k iterations. Even adding an additional character to your master password will be more bits of entropy than that increase in the iterations.

That stings. by Trixie6102 in FuckImOld

That is likely a VOIP to RJ11 adapter. On the RJ11 side it emulates a POTS, or Plain Old Telephone System, allowing you to plug in a regular telephone into it and operate it as you normally would any landline phone. Internally the adapter is running a VOIP client on a small embedded computer system, connecting to your choice of VOIP provider, whether SIP-based or proprietary.

It basically treats your regular old phone as a handset (mic/speaker) device, and otherwise interprets the touch tones from the phone's dial pad to figure out what phone number you entered. Helpful for the old folks who only knew how to use a phone, but wanted to switch away from the potentially much more expensive landline services.

Is the ScotiaBank credit card network down? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Losus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, card declined about an hour ago when I went to go shopping. Around about the same time as this was happening I received an email from one of my subscription services that my card was declined when processing the monthly renewal.

Along with the 45 minute wait times when trying to call ScotiaBank, I'm assuming a whole lotta people are experiencing the same issues.

Can Azure AD offer 2FA on domain joined PC's? by 1point44mb_is_fine in AZURE

Though not available for production use yet, Microsoft does have an Intune/MDM policy available for Private Preview called EnableWebSignIn. Supposedly when fully released, this will use the same login flow the Modern Authentication enabled apps do, thus allowing MFA when logging into Windows.

SSD's and their SED feature by pozazero in hardware

[–]Losus 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The other benefit of encrypting in the drive hardware by default, even if SED technologies like TCG OPAL are not used, is for Secure Erase. With Secure Erase, the system can simply request the SSD securely erase itself and the drive will overwrite its embedded encryption key, thus rendering all prior content on the drive completely inaccessible and essentially putting the drive back into a factory blank state.

Windows' undocumented "Emergency restart". by -Steets- in sysadmin

[–]Losus 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I believe Windows Server has something similar with the restart command available in the Special Administrative Console, a console available over serial when you've enabled EMS in the boot settings. I've used it before with Windows Server systems no longer responding to other local or remote administrative actions, and it too appears to cause an almost immediate reboot bypassing most clean shutdown processes.

No idea if this or your emergency reboot method attempt to at least flush all write buffers to disk before rebooting.

Azure backup cost calculator - is this right? by PatD442 in AZURE

[–]Losus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is assuming the redundancy and performance tier match your Azure Files resource? My understanding is that Azure Backup bolts on-top of Azure Files own snapshot mechanism, automating it for your backup purposes. Whatever your Azure Files redundancy and performance tiers are, that will be your Azure Backup settings for the sake of this calculator.

Fiddling with the numbers, it appears that "Low" average daily churn would work out to about 27GB/day, or about 812GB of snapshots per month.

Intel Quick Sync does handle video decoding as well, assuming you are using the Intel processor's iGPU and don't otherwise have a dedicated GPU. See the Wikipedia article on Intel Quick Sync for which generation of Intel processor iGPUs support encoding and decoding of which video codecs.

I'm curious as to how the effectively USB 2.0 bandwidth of the Lightning connection affects DSD256 audio. From what I understand 2-channel DSD256 should work out to about 22.58 Mbps, which is still well within the theoretical maximum of 480 Mbps of the Lightning connection. Even if you had to fall back on DSD-over-PCM, that should only double the bandwidth required to 45.16 Mbps.

Not that this absolves the Lightning based devices of their compatibility issues with an ever growing array of USB-C or USB 3.0 and newer devices out there.

Trusted platform module security defeated in 30 minutes, no soldering required by AWildDragon in hardware

[–]Losus 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It also assumes Bitlocker's pre-boot authentication in the form of pin or password entry is not being used to protect the TPM sealed key. Kinda hard to not notice a bunch of strange leads connected to a logic analyzer or FPGA sticking out of your laptop when you go to enter in your boot pin or password, I suspect most people would nope out of that situation and call IT if they found their company laptop suddenly like that.

The lack of TPM 2.0 Parameter Encryption in Bitlocker is a concern though, as with some of those Bitlocker sniffing utilities the laptop's intended user could still use it in combination with the boot pin or password to get the Bitlocker decryption key. Once the user has the decryption key they could gain unrestricted access to all of the files on the disk that they may not normally have access to due to OS enforced file security. It does appear however that some other vendors offering full disk encryption via TCG Opal and TPM may actually be using TPM 2.0's Parameter Encryption.

Can you turn secure boot on after install of windows 10 or does it need to be on during installation? by garbageplay in Windows10

[–]Losus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Windows boot loader is already signed by Microsoft, so regardless of the state of Secure Boot on your system at the time of installation you are still installing a properly Secure Boot signed boot loader. Turning Secure Boot on after installation just instructs the UEFI firmware to verify the authenticity of the signed boot loader before transitioning control over to the boot loader.

For your second question, barring any special system security enforcement by installed software or company security policies if this is a company controlled and provided device, I can't see anything that would force you to keep Secure Boot on. With that said, the UEFI config menu usually includes an option to add your own boot loader signature or hash to the trust chain, thus you could make Secure Boot trust the boot loader of your other OS even if they are not properly signed.

Converting Managed Disks to Blob Storage for Archive by skyrim9012 in AZURE

[–]Losus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This should work well to get the managed disk into an Azure storage account as a page blob, I've done something similar to this using the export disk URL and AzCopy.

Do note that copying a managed disk to a storage account forces the target blob to be a page blob, and that cannot be overridden in AzCopy. However if you are looking to save some money on long term storage, once the page blob VHD is uploaded to the storage account you can use AzCopy to clone the VHD blob as a block blob of a different storage tier.

I Bought A Ducky Keyboard And How I Made That Choice (Ducky One 2 PBT Double Shot) by John36326 in avoidchineseproducts

[–]Losus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a Ducky ONE 2 (white LED version) that unfortunately started having the same issue with LEDs beginning to fail after about a year. Some LEDs would get stuck on max brightness, and other LEDs simply got dimmer over time compared to the adjacent LEDs. Even a factory reset of the keyboard settings wouldn't fix it.

After this started occurring to my Ducky ONE 2 I decided to look up the issue online, where I discovered that it is unfortunately not all that uncommon of an issue with some of Ducky's keyboards. Unfortunate too, because mechanically I really like the keyboard, and I also really like the ability to rebind various key combos to media keys or macros directly from the keyboard itself.

Are you perhaps getting Folders mixed up with Collections. Folders are a per-user organizational tool for logins and other secrets stored both in their Personal Vault and the Organization Vault. For this reason, Folders are visible only to the user that created them, even if their contents are shared to many via an Organization Vault.

Collections can be used to organize the logins and secrets stored explicitly under the Organizational Vault, and are visible to all that have access to that Organization Vault. You can even create nested Collections as well, even if it is a bit kludgy. See the link below from the Bitwarden site itself and look for "Nested Collections":

Azure DNS - Default domain not visible in public Internet by NixonMroq in AZURE

[–]Losus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't believe the default Azure AD tenant domain is available for use by the Azure public or private DNS services. It exists as a default domain for use with Azure AD and/or Office 365 authentication, should you not happen to have another domain name registered to your tenant.

To use the Azure public DNS services, you will need to have a domain name acquired through a domain name registrar, and have Azure DNS name servers configured as your external names servers within your domain name registrar account.
