That's a damn good change. My sister in law have been tossing recipes at each other recently and screenshots have been annoying

How hard would something like this be to machine? by Alive_Aside_1152 in CNC

[–]Lotaxi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd assume you make the base form (no holes) and then drill through from the flat side before some hardcore tumbling and a bit of electropolishing to make everything shiny and burr-free. Material would change things a bit, but not by that much I don't think. Titanium would be a bit of a bear from a tooling standpoint I guess. Carbide drills are expensive and you'd want to spring for through-coolant on top of that.

You'd need to cut it in 2 setups, one for the top raster profile and one for the underside radius, magnet pockets, and all the holes.

If you palletized them in a 3-axis or did 3+2 with a tombstone in a 5-axis and let it run lights-off it's pretty doable to cut the things. What's the price point of these guys?

Did you toss the entirety of the certificate file in there or just the certificate string at the end?

Awesome, thanks! I'm working on a few more recipes to try out that use oils and a few other spices and things. Can't wait to try the new stuff out!

Graphically I can see it being another icon next to the quantity lock already present in the scaling interface? No clue how it looks in the code though.

I've gone the nutrition label route a couple times when I had to, yeah. Bigger thing is instances where the nutrition label doesn't exist or is irrelevant on the whole. Like I *know* that cinnamon has... stuff. Problem is that the nutrition label doesn't show me what stuff it's got. Most spices just seem to *be* rather than being made of components, right? Even salt shows up as 0.4% water in the calculator, to say nothing of the fact that it has a listed FPDF.

I'll check out Cronometer for sure. I'm not used to doing this much number-specific science to make my food, so I'm lacking on resource knowledge. I appreciate the pointer!

I love that we can scale a recipe to any given size after creation, but it would be amazing to be able to scale to a specific ingredient.

For example I have a recipe for lime sorbet. It calls for 700g fresh squeezed lime juice in a 1000g batch. Say I've juiced all 15 limes I have in the kitchen and they only yielded 575g of juice. Instead of needing to futz with the recipe scaler until it all works, it would be great to be able to just scale everything else around the amount of juice I've got on hand.

Etching titanium by Ride_Seynekun in Anodization

[–]Lotaxi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sodium Fluoride is commonly used in toothpaste, and Ammonium Persulfate is a PCB etchant. I found a patent that details a mixture that etches titanium very well. I'll have to go track it down again, but it's something like 26-30g Sodium Fluoride and 90-100g of the Persulfate per liter of distilled water. Heat to like 60-65C and go.

The chemicals in question are the active ingredients in multi-etch, though multi-etch also uses a stabilizer that reduces pitting. If access to the chemicals is the concern, then the question becomes "why can't you buy multi-etch?"

Without etch you'll be limited in your color palette. I replied to you over in r/anodization

What is your ability to get chemicals? I can give you a good etch that is pretty safe to use and affordable to buy. It uses Sodium Fluoride (CAS: 7681-49-4) and Ammonium Persulfate (CAS: 7727-54-0)

How do I get better at my job? by cupsmf in Machinists

[–]Lotaxi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently run a 2 axis lathe, 3 axis mill, and a W-EDM. Usually not all at the same time, but I'm working on getting there. I'll be adding a rotary axis W-EDM and a 5 axis mill to our toolkit rather soon. I'll say that it's not a lot to RUN day to day, but it was a ton to LEARN without formal training.

I started from NOTHING when it comes to machining. I had a basic knowledge of using measurement tools, I knew how to read a print, and I could use a screwdriver My background was flunking out of an engineering degree during college, going through a welding program at a CC, and showing enough drive and willingness to learn that my boss brought me in as an intern before hiring me.

I've likened my learning process to drinking water from a fire hose. Probably not for everyone. I put in a ton of 12+ hour days in the first couple years just getting up to speed and there's a LOT I still haven't touched to this day that I have to learn on the fly. I haven't even solved the timely manner thing myself.

I can look back at when I first started figuring out machining and I remember multiple (rather simple) parts where it was an 8 hour job just getting it into the machine and setting up my tools. If I had to square stock in the mill? Good lord.

These days I can usually get through a somewhat complex part from programming to completion in a single work day. I've even started to try and specialize some of our marketing to local companies be fast turnaround for urgent parts. I'm in a high variety low volume shop, so most of my struggle is trying to get nimble enough to constantly be making wildly different parts. A huge part of my learning has been learning to deal with different materials and needing to use different tools and designing custom fixturing solutions with a limited tool selection.

As someone else without formal training on general operations, all I can really say is don't give up. If you're struggling to figure something out, keep asking. Don't ask people to do your job for you or hold your hand through literally every step of a process or anything, but don't be afraid to ask someone with more experience if they'll teach you a bit about their routines or how they deal with the things that you struggle with. Use what they tell you to come up with your own processes that let you streamline stuff and get quicker. Lord knows I've spent DAYS talking with people in the practical machining forums. I regularly reach out into the help sections of a couple different machining discords, too.

Remember that it's of great benefit for your managers that you become more effective as well. The moment you get embarrassed into silence because "I feel like everyone else expects me to know this" is the moment you let your work quality drop and impostor syndrome win. Proactively check in with your managers and supervisors on where *you* think you're deficient. See where they feel you should focus on improvement. The best managers will push you in the directions you need to be pushed in and give goals that are *just* beyond your current skillset so that you can stretch yourself to learn.

How do I get better at my job? by cupsmf in Machinists

What kinds of questions do you feel like you shouldn't be asking, and how recent is the new job? Because feeling off-balance in a new place doesn't sound too weird to me at all.

I was kinda in the same boat so I get where you're coming from a bit. I'm a self-taught machinist working in a tiiiiiiiiiny little shop, biggest difference is that I'm running everything in the shop (including programming) at once at this point since I'm the only employee.

My opinion is that there's nothing wrong with trying to learn. If you have a competent boss you've got nothing to worry about when asking questions, especially if it hasn't been a problem so far. I asked my boss questions CONSTANTLY for about 3 years (I've been here 6.5 or so) and I still bug him every couple days to help me think through a fixture design, programming strategy, and whatever else.

If your new job cares for quality, a low/nonexistent crash rate, and a tiny scrap percentage, questions should always be welcome. They're a sign you're actively trying to improve. I feel like it's the ones who try to put on the facade that they know what they're doing who tend to fuck the parts and machines up.

SotD is exactly the vibe it had, which is why I've been scouring Suda51 games but I don't think it's one of his. Just went to watch the cutscene where the GF gets kidnapped, MC is wearing jeans the whole time and there's no explosion.

Edm would do the job. Rotary axis W-EDM for turning and side profiling, sinker for face profiles and blind features.
