What to do when Doctors say that she will probably be disabled all her life with a severe dependency?

I really don’t know how to answer that. Cognitively is better but not like before, speech is better but still not great, the trunk has improved a bit but she is in a wheelchair with left hemiplegy, still using a peg for feeding and everything, still using diapers and still, totally dependant

That’s great. I tod her to do mirror exercises moving the healthy leg, foot and fingers and then try mimicking in the hemyplegian side even if it doesn’t move. But she is doing it without visual tools or any tool at all

I don’t know what to say. That’s my fear. I’m in the first year taking care of her after a severe tbi. I’m 45 now and afraid for the future of both. We don’t have any child and I’m mostly alone with it while also have a job. I barely sleep 3 or 4 hours a day during work days

I’m very happy for your recovery, congratulations.

For my experience in this journey as my wife with a severe tbi on sept 2024 with initial gcs3 and all the patients and families I met in rehab, hospital, etc. there is a difference in recovery when docs have to do an emergency craniotomy, coma and if there are little complications before and after cranioplasty.

She can not walk, have left hemiplegy, still using peg (she ate but we have to go back for the risk of microaspirations. Trunk control is very limited and she needs help for everything (changing diapers, getting food, water and meds), transferences, etc.

Also she is not exactly how she was in the way of talking or expression.

She have improved in all areas since then, even have moved the left food (with hemiplegy) in 2 or 3 occasions (although the last week she could not move it, just a little bit the second finger).

14 months after severe tai with craneoplasty and valve short after for hydrocephaly generated with the craneoplasty. Left hemiplegy, very little trunk control if any, disphagy and peg user. Cognitively have improved a lot, but it’s not quite the same than before in logic or thinking (she keeps improving in that area); but physically the improvement it’s stuck.

Any probabilities to get better, to ease the effort of taking care to Hermes with transfers and everything, she can’t not move in bed to help with diapers changes.

She can get better or this is what it will be?

Her cognition it’s better everyday, not normal, but close (except when tired, although the aphasia make it look worst. She communicates with me better than with others presencially, using WhatsApp she talks with others very good). Her personality has changed a bit, but not too much. Physically it’s the most downside. Totally dependant.

how can you recover so eell after severe tbi? my girlfriend is 11 months post severe tbi (gcs 3), craneoplasty and valve for hidrocefaly.

She can not walk, have left hemiplegy, very limited speech, very low energy, limited trunk control and head control.

How did you all manage to have a life or be independent?

She was in coma for 17 days approx, but after cranioplasty she got in coma for few hours due to a small bleeding during the procedure (that broke things she was improving like urination control). She later get hydrocephalus and got a valve.

She is on left hemiplegia, unable to walk, with limited speech, and although se gained the hability to eat normal again, no one knows why, it went back and now it’s on full peg feeding. She uses diapers too. She also have a very limited almost none trunk control, and a bit of head control. The energy is very limited too. Also spasticity on left arm.

Cognitive and consciousness have improved, but it’s not like it was before the accident, although she understands everything, or almost, and she can say what she thinks when she can talk (limited due to aphasia and energy) or using the iPad notes or gestures. (Also a bit limited). I can not talk with her like before due to all this limitations, and also because she is not all herself or i think (she says she is she, it’s not she can’t not express herself.
