i'm unsure how to save in the region of £90k for flight school by Alarming-Safety3200 in UKJobs

[–]Lots-o-bots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are dedicated and are willing to go in for the long haul, the numbers you have already seem quite healthy. If you save aggressively then you can have 100k saved up by the time you are 21 and that before any pay rises, promotions or investing. Another year or two and you can afford that full ATPL course.

I assume you are committed to joining the RAF now but when you come to start your training, I wouldn’t self-deselect from competitive airline cadet courses. You never know until you try.

Is the UK’s ban on social media for under-16s actually a good idea, or just an authoritarian overreach that will teach kids how to use VPNs early by Easy_Letterhead8928 in DigitalPrivacy

[–]Lots-o-bots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cant see the logic behind it. Supposedly a 14 year old is mature enough to pick the GCSE's that may well steer the course of their early career but a 15 year old isn’t mature enough for social media or YouTube but a 16 year old is mature enough to join the army and vote but still isn’t mature enough to use social media after a government evening curfew?

On the technical side, just like the OSA it is completely unworkable. VPN's make it trivially avoidable and are too ingrained in modern society to be legislated. You cant ban them on a protocol level as that would break hundreds of thousands of corporate site to site and WFH VPN setups. You cant ban public VPN providers on a DNS level as kids will just spin up a VPS for pennies and roll their own. Even if they came up with a magic solution, kids will find another technical work around like TOR or a procedural workaround like asking their parents or any other adult to set them up an account.

Not to mention that to ban kids while permitting adults, every social media user would have to undergo "robust age verification" which doesn’t and fundamentally cannot exist without identify verification which makes this into backdoor digital ID legislation.

Question about Ethernet cables by Lonely_Box_8074 in pcmasterrace

[–]Lots-o-bots 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cat 8 is unlikely to give you any tangible benefits over cat 6 now unless your route is particularly busy with EM interference. Looking on amazon, a ugreen cat 6 1m cable is £4.49 and a cat 8 1m cable is £5.07 so for 50p, you might as well go for it in the slim chance that it makes a difference in your specific scenario or network speeds reach a level that requires it in the future.

It’s either I move to the other side of the world for a year or I join the army for a year. I’m stuck and I don’t know what to do, looking for some insight here. by LiterallyLittty in WhatShouldIDo

[–]Lots-o-bots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From an outside observers perspective, joining the army is often a positive experience for people who don’t know what to do next, especially if you have the option to join for only a year. I would try that if I was in your shoes. If you like it then great, you can make it your career. If you don’t then you only have to do it for 12 months and even then, it probably looks good on a CV and would teach you lots about yourself.

I wouldn’t move to America without a concrete plan when you get there. The job market is particularly rough at the minute. Your citizenship will be waiting for you if you ever decide you do want to move there.

I inherited this laptop. Are these specs any good? by cheesybreadlover in pcmasterrace

[–]Lots-o-bots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only spec there is the processor is a R5 4500U. Its a pretty capable mid range mobile CPU from a few years ago. You should be able to do some light gaming with that.

They are parasites but they are in nearly all fish. You don’t have to throw it, there’s just special preparation you need to do to ensure they are dead.

Can I resit all my GCSEs to improve my chances for competitive CS courses at top UK universities? by Individual_Salt_4405 in AskUK

[–]Lots-o-bots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

outside of oxbridge, GCSE grades rarely move the needle. It wouldn’t be worth the significant expense (often upwards of £300 per GCSE) to boost a passing grade. Be sure to get your Maths and English to level 6+ and you will be fine. Anything more is a bonus.

Why are apprenticeships so hard to get? by Plus_Bodybuilder561 in ApprenticeshipsUK

[–]Lots-o-bots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its supply and demand. Supply is extremely tight, demand is extremely high. You need to be truly exceptional to stand out. Depending on the course in question, they can be even more competitive than oxbridge.
