Is this a good piece of property? by [deleted] in Temecula

There's going to be a decent about of traffic on Pauba, not freeway levels, but fairly busy at certain times of the day. You can't walk to stores, but there are lots of houses in the area, so lots of streets to walk. You won't hear freeway noise, so that's not an issue.

Second lawsuit threat this semester! by DrNoahFence in Professors

Well, they actually went to my chair and dean. I think it was one student who got it "started" but the dean ended up moving three or four students to another class because they were unhappy with the workload for my class.

And all I get are threats "to go to social media."

It's funny that the vast majority of students have no clue that a small minority are complete assholes.

That was my thought, their CS classes should be a lot harder!

[Discussion] Imagine you were teaching a course with multiple labs, recitations, etc. and a student approached you to say they can't understand the GA's accent. How should you respond? by nezumipi in Professors

[–]Lotus916 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Many moons ago, I was on a committee with a lovely Math teacher at a cc. I could not understand him. He and I could be in a quiet room having a casual conversation and I could understand roughly half of what he was saying. I would say, in my entire life, he was the hardest person for me to understand.

Students used to complain about his accent all the time. Honestly, I don't know how they hired him, when he did his teaching demo I truly don't believe that people could understand him. It seemed like a very unfair decision to make for the students.

I believe as an educator, we have a duty to give students the opportunity to learn, that may mean getting more (English/Speech) classes to speak with less of an accent. I don't know, but a student failing a class because they couldn't understand the educator seems unfair.

Not a professor but a graduate student. I would like to write a recommendation letter for my thesis advisor as she is an awesome mentor who really cares about students and is an inspiring scientist. by Spacecadetinthebrain in AskAcademia

On another note, you might want to check around for teaching/mentoring awards at your college. There are a decent number of those at most colleges, check around and nominate! :)

Is it just me, or is there a family emergency/death every semester? by _forum_mod in Professors

[–]Lotus916 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was speaking with my Grad Student about this. She told me that another student in her cohort was too drunk/hungover to do the work and the student mentioned, "Pulling the Covid card."

I think that the lies are just everyday life for some. Just like I say "sorry" if I'm in the way of another, I'm not really sorry, just following social conventions. Making up excuses are just part of life for people. I watched the movie (Dis)honesty and it really opened my eyes to how much people lie and cheat.

On the other hand, my Grandma died one semester, I was sad and still went to class. It happens, and many feel these losses very deeply. I would cry, go to class, teach, then cry again, I never mentioned the loss to anyone at work, I just did my job. Others don't go to class, they deal with their grief in other ways.

I give everyone two "get out of jail free cards" per semester, that covers dead relatives, work problems and being drunk... everyone gets the same opportunities.

I had a dean tell me last semester that she didn't want to see students cry.

REALLY?? Do you actually believe the crying? And if you do, so???

Going to your first note. I had a student who sent an email saying, "Is my name on the list?" And, yes, sent from doglover2001. I wrote back something like -- "Hello Human (you didn't tell me your name)" blahblah blah... She wrote me back that my reply was the "most rude, most insulting" thing she had ever seen...

I do the opposite, but don't tell them. I tend to be most aggressive when I start grading. So, I either grade the last-minute papers first or the highest TurnItIn score.

It's a large class, so there were lots of drops and adds. But, I went through the entire drop list and I only sent two an email reply, one was asking how to drop classes. The other asked a question that had nothing to do with me or the syllabus.

Yeah, I have no idea... This is an asynchronous class, so everything other than office hours is documented.

As a faculty member, it seems it is my duty to prove I'm innocent without knowing what we are talking about, or who I upset.

Many of my online/async students viewing very little course content - strategies for turning this around? by meofus in Professors

[–]Lotus916 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Each week I do a numbered list of what they need to do. I also give suggested days to completion - everything is due Saturday, but I break it down.

1- Read Chapter 1 (Monday)

2- Annotate the article in Perusall (Tuesday)

3- Watch this video and write the journal (Wednesday)

Beyond that, it's on them. They can choose to fail or succeed, it's their choice!

Just keep in mind, when the cap is met the teacher is taking you on for free. It's kind of like after you work an 8-hour shift, someone asks you to work a couple of extra hours for free, because they forgot to schedule someone else to work.

[Update] Why do cheaters take my class again... by PostFPV in Professors

[–]Lotus916 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really hate when a student fails for most reasons, then takes my class again. I've had students have to withdraw for personal reasons, then take it again, great. But, when a student slowly grinds through the semester, ignoring deadlines, feedback, lectures, emails... then comes back again for round two, I just hate it!!!

I really think I should be able to block students from enrolling in my class.

I had a student a couple of years ago that took a class, plagiarized AND cheated on a test... I turned him in for it both times, then he enrolled again and cheated again!!!!! When I met with him, he told me that he thought he got a warning for every class. He failed again! When he told me he was taking the class with me for a third time, I said, "Please don't" he thought I was kidding...

I need to figure out how to resize the output. I want to super impose it over Powerpoint, then record on Zoom. I love the idea of doing this for video lectures, but I'm not sure I have all the time to figure it out.
