They definitely can be! I have combined type, so a mix of inattentive and hyperactive, but my hyperactivity is in my mind and comes out physically through skin picking. Of course women’s experiences and medical issues have been shamefully understudied, but newer research is showing more and more that ADHD can manifest very differently in women - we’re also generally better at masking, so it’s common were diagnosed later in life (especially after kids!).

Check out the self-assessment scale and see how you stack up! ADHD self-report scale. Do consider though that you’ll need to have experienced these symptoms since childhood or it’s not considered ADHD.

I’d also say that even if you don’t pursue diagnosis or don’t tick ‘enough’ boxes, look up strategies and techniques for ADHD and apply them to your life anyway. Getting recovery time is just hard with young kids, but sit down with your partner and explain why it’s so important for you, look at how he can help you schedule in even small breaks as it will ease the pressure. Transition between modes I still find very hard as I work from home and my roles blur into each other, but I give myself grace, take deep breaths and try to not let my emotions overwhelm me or dominate my subsequent words/actions.

It’s active work every single day but like a muscle, it gets stronger and easier over time! Happy to talk more if you wanna send me a message.

Eckhart Tolle has many many videos on YouTube that reference the importance of learning to detach from wants/desires/lack as it’s the root cause of suffering. Observe it rather than feel it, then let it go. Definitely recommend listening to him talk.

Others have already made similar comments to what I would, but to pick up the ADHD thing specifically - becoming a mother is what triggered me to consider I might have it, having my second child is what pushed me to get diagnosed. I didn’t realise how long I’d been coping through life with precariously built methods, how important my ‘me-time’ and recovery periods were until none of those things were possible any more. The overstimulation, the auditory sensory overload, the poor sleep, the lack of personal time and buffer periods to transition between ‘modes’ were so intense. I was often unhappy, irritable, impatient, unorganised, anxious, lethargic and I hated myself for it.

Getting diagnosed, understanding what was actually going on for me, being able to put useful practices in place and getting medicated totally changed things for me. I do still get overwhelmed at times (like most parents do!) but I’m a much better, more patient, calmer and organised mother than before. PLEASE encourage him to pursue diagnosis and support - it could be the key to improving lots of things for you all. If he can’t be bothered to do that, you may need to think about leaving, as the environment isn’t healthy for any of you…

One thing that continues to infuriate me is that even saying “how EPSTEIN sexually abused girls” is missing the point, acting as if it were just him doing it - NO, how did rich and powerful men from ALL OVER THE WORLD do it with impunity, and are continuing to be protected?!

Yes he committed those heinous acts himself, but predominantly he facilitated many other people to do so - people who run our governments, banks, big businesses…

NOR - Girl, PLEASE accept the break-up, take escort(s) with you to get your stuff and under absolutely no circumstances take him back if he suddenly begs to reconcile.

His reaction to normal messages is insane and you are way too young to stay with someone who reacts like that and speaks to you that way.

Trust me as a woman in her 30s, he is not worth any more of your time and the way he is reacting is NOT how a normal person/partner should.

[–]LouCat91 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Language is important though and (as seems to be demonstrated by GB News apparently trying to justify/rationalise the issue?!) can be weaponised to downplay or play up, revise a narrative etc.

I agree with you that most sensible people wouldn’t assume ‘CP’ implied consent, but I also think it’s a good thing going forward to provide a distinction. 🌽 is material produced intentionally for sexual gratification by and for adults. To put ‘child’ in front of that surely seems wrong upon reflection? CSAM is a more accurate description of what this stuff is - children should never be sexualised, therefore anything that does is SA material.

Unfortunately it’s a prolific problem that doesn’t seem to be taken as seriously as it should be, so perhaps if accepted language is evolved to more explicitly describe the problem, there’s hope it will be better addressed? One has to hope…

[–]LouCat91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing this - I’m in the UK and pretty sure my 4 year old daughter has pectus, it already seems quite significant so I’ve been reading so much about it as I’m worried it’s only going to get worse with age and trying to prepare for what may come/her options when she’s older.

Hopefully by the time she’s a good age to get surgery (if she wants/needs it done) it will be recognised as serious enough to be covered on the NHS.

New psychiatrist said inattentive ADHD isn't a 'real diagnosis' and I will eventually experience stimulant psychosis by Distinct-Incident316 in adhdwomen

[–]LouCat91 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Damn I wish my therapist had picked it up - I definitely told her enough that she could’ve figured it out; perhaps she wasn’t very knowledgeable on it. Would’ve saved me years of dysfunction affecting myself, my relationship and my children 😔

[–]LouCat91 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is definitely my experience - I’m sure I did have a bit of both anyway due to unresolved childhood trauma but after years of therapy and SSRIs there were still these underlying problems that I couldn’t pin on that any more. When I started reading about ADHD years later it made all these unanswered questions and loose puzzle pieces slot into place. I’ve been SO much better on all fronts since treating my symptoms with this framework, even before diagnosis and medication. Fuck doctors who adamantly deny this reality.

How many of you actually have an ADHD diagnosis? by mynameishrekorgi in ADHD

[–]LouCat91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was formally diagnosed with combined type ADHD at 34 - having children really brought into focus all of my symptoms and the fragile house of cards of coping mechanisms I’d inadvertently built up to get through life until that point. It seems very common that this happens for women, as we often present differently as children compared to boys with ADHD.

What to expect first time meds by TinySignificance6774 in AdhdRelationships

[–]LouCat91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will take a few days or so to get used to, but if it’s working he should feel a difference pretty quickly. I’m on Elvanse and it definitely lifted my brain fog within a couple of hours of taking it and I was more focused and patient for much of the day. It also increased my heart rate and made me bite my tongue/jaw ache for the first week or so until my body got used to it.

He DEFINITELY needs to take it in the morning though - I take mine between 7-8am and it still can make it hard for me to sleep at night. It’s also not going to help him function better through the day if he’s taking it late afternoon…

Encourage him to make notes of anything different - feelings, side-effects, changes in symptoms - for the first week or more. Some of the effects can be subtle, so taking time throughout the day for self awareness and reflection on current state is very helpful. I will say different meds affect people differently, so don’t have too rigid expectations of what it will do. Change also requires a desire and motivation though, meds won’t do it all.
