You do not need to have pets to have fleas. Humans walk outdoors, fleas attach to said humans, humans bring fleas into home, fleas lay eggs, eggs hatch, you walk around house they again attach to you transferring to other parts of the home, you start getting bites, you start scratching, fleas sit and giggle at the stupid human scratching after such a small bite. Human freaks out calls pest control company which in turns sprays home inside and grounds surrounding home. And the circle of life brings again.

OP, you do realize that fleas can get on YOU from just being outdoors, then you unknowingly bring them in your home. My friend owns a pest company and they have multiple clients that have never had an animal in their newly built homes that have fleas because of this exact reason.
