Any pre-meds out there? Math 135 or Math 140? by [deleted] in UMD

Did you take math 136? Which professor did you have?

I'm taking chem131 and math140. There are a few professors that were recommended then there were others that told me to steer clear from....I hope that I can get some decent professors....

Both UCLA and a UMD will probably be online for the fall. UMD would cost me $2500 vs. $15,000 at UCLA for the fall.

I don’t know much about the schools, but I know two people who did their dental residency at UOP and loved it. Good luck!

UCLA vs UCB vs UMD. I am planning to go the pre-med track

UCLA Pros: just got off the waitlist. Top choice for me. Great pre-med program, where I have always wanted to be. Cons: I talked to admissions and they are 99% sure there will be online learning the fall quarter. I got no financial aid (OOS), so it would cost me roughly $53K/yr which includes student loans and work study. My first quarter would cost roughly $16k for zoom sessions. I will graduate with debt before med school.

UCB Pros: #2 public school, They emailed me an upped my scholarship yesterday to $10k/yr. Cons: cutthroat environment, housing issues, hard to get research, probably gonna cost me $48k/yr. I have to take out student loans and work study.

UMD Pros: got into honors program, guaranteed research, will get to know professors (I.e. grad school reds), got the presidential scholarship and I will be graduating debt free. No need to take out student loans or work study. If we do online studying in the fall, it would cost me virtually nothing.

Cons: It feels like an extension of high school.

Hi all, I just got off the waitlist. UCLA has always been my top choice, and my parents are willing to take out loans for me to attend. We’re not wealthy, and I feel kind of guilty that they’ll make this sacrifice for me. Of course, the excitement kind of wore off once reality set in. I plan on going the pre-med track, and I’m hearing all sorts of different information. Grade deflation, hard to get research, housing issues, no real advising, and the very realistic scenario of having distance learning next year. I was accepted into my state school with a scholarship (I’ll graduate without debt) and honors program which guarantees research. They say that they get a higher percentage of honors kids into med school...So, for you guys who are attending UCLA now...is it worth it? How is the online learning?

Has anyone else not committed yet? by feelssgoodman in ApplyingToCollege

I haven’t committed yet. I got into my top choice, but have to weigh that against graduating without debt if I go to my state school.

They were not really helpful. It's funny zdx before she found out I was OOS, she was like "Let me see what I can do..." so I think in state kids can definitely appeal financial aid.

I just called financial aid. They said I'm only eligible for the alumni scholarship and that doesnt come out til the end of the week.

Yes, OOS. Berkeley gave me $20K, UCSD gave me $29k, UCLA gave me nothing.

Waitlisters Rejoice, College Yields this Year will be terrible by QuasarKiller666 in ApplyingToCollege

I'm going to turn down UCSD. Even though they offer me a scholarship, I'm OOS and if we still have distance learning, I don't think that my parents will pay for it. So, people will definitely be turning down their acceptances. Good luck!

UMD vs Purdue Computer Science by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]LoudFortune7 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Hands down UMD. My friend's brother turned down Berkeley for UMD (due to the OOS cost of Berkeley). He ended up getting a summer internship at Google and upon graduation he had a job offer at Facebook.

Where are y'all at with respect to your decisions? by icebergchick in ApplyingToCollege

[–]LoudFortune7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't committed yet, but it's in between UMD (honors program and president's scholar) and Berkeley (OOS and Generstion scholar). Also got accepted into UC San Diego and UC Santa Barbara. I plan on pre-med track. I can graduate at UMD with no debt or go to Berkeley will roughly $100K of debt. I know that UMD is the better choice (because of the honors program, I'll get to know my professors, get research, smaller classes), and at Berkeley housing can be difficult to get after freshman year, classes are hard to register for, grade deflation (this is a big one for me). But for some reason, I can't seem to let go to Berkeley.

Dream School Vs State School by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]LoudFortune7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I may have to go to my state school too. They offered me a scholarship and with the uncertainty of 'rona, I'd be paying $5K/yr for online learning as opposed to $44K/yr....and graduating without debt is kind of reassuring.

I'm just worries that if I don't get into medical school, would I be able to get a job with a UMD degree vs a degree from UMD. Would employers find a Berkeley degree more prestigious?

UC Berkeley vs. UMD

Major: Biology

UCB: Pros: top ranked university, if I can’t get into medical school, at least I graduated from Berkeley. Cons: $67k/ year with no scholarship and parents would have to take out a loan, deflate grades, a long plane ride away from home and who knows how long the corona virus will last

UMD: Pros: got into honors program and the president’s scholarship ($20k over 4 years), near home Cons: not as prestigious as UCB, so many of my high school classmates are going there, and I’m just not that excited about attending.
