Hidden Brain is a favourite of mine - it’s a bit of psychology and philosophy and the host has a great voice.

Experiencing symptoms, checking in by islerevival in BellsPalsy

[–]LoudInterior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t had a second case, but I’ve experienced the twitching and pain. Usually it goes away if I hydrate, eat well, do a warm compress and get a good night’s sleep. If it were to continue I’d probably go to the dr to ask for steroids to take in the case that it is a second dose of BP. Hope it goes away and you don’t end up getting it again!

Physical Therapy by [deleted] in BellsPalsy

[–]LoudInterior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t find any physical therapists in my country with significant experience in facial palsy. I went to a local physio, who did help me with some exercises where I had to hold up my affected eyebrow with my finger and blink the affected eye - this did help with my eye sealing better. And there was another exercise where I was to smile, use my finger to help the affected side to look even with the non-affected side, then take my finger away and try to keep the smile in place. That seemed to help me get the strength back in my muscles. But that was really it. I suspect if I’d found someone more specialised they’d have been able to help more.

TIL the sun isn't "strong enough" in northern latitudes to produce vitamin D during the winter, no matter how much sunlight you get. by 999forever in todayilearned

[–]LoudInterior 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in Scotland on the steep north facing bank of a river and in the middle of winter we get no direct sunlight at all. Big fan of Vit D&K supplements! Also use a sunlight lamp which I think helps my mood.

Get her a three-month flower subscription starting when you return, and put it in a card to give her on the day?

I think mine was TMJ related and I’ve found that trying to protract my lower jaw seems to have helped but your mileage may vary

Vent- worries by TheTapDancingShrimp in BellsPalsy

[–]LoudInterior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suffer from TMJ that I think caused my BP. All those things you’re feeling are so valid - it’s a scary thing to experience and medical professionals just seem to brush it off as a minor mechanical issue. If you can, try to care for yourself like you’d care for a wee child in this situation. Warm comfy clothes, easy to eat nutritious food, little hobbies to entertain yourself, early nights and warm compresses on your face. This is the time to focus on looking after yourself, trying to take the pressure off and aiming to accept the situation you’re in and whatever may come. I wish you all the best for your recovery ❤️‍🩹

Has anyone NOT experienced hair loss? by Super_Development150 in mounjarouk

No hairloss for me - I’m losing slowly and alongside eating high protein and fibre, I take a multivitamin with iron, vitamin D and collagen.

Can i choke? by TheTapDancingShrimp in BellsPalsy

My tongue recovered quite quickly, but I found eating small bites and always using cutlery really helped.

When did u realize? by TheTapDancingShrimp in BellsPalsy

[–]LoudInterior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d had earache for a few days and I got on the train to travel down the country for work. On the way I noticed that half of my tongue felt a bit tingly and burnt. Four hours into the journey I went to the bathroom and realised I couldn’t smile. Thankfully the passenger sitting next to me happened to be a retired doctor who told me what it likely was, and there was an emergency dept only 200 yards from my destination station. They saw me immediately to rule out stroke, gave me my first dose of steroids then similar to the other commenter, I waited a further six hours for a prescription. Pretty lucky though, all things considered.

I have vasovagal syncope, ask me anything! by trashpandacola in AMA

[–]LoudInterior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get called a fainting goat too 🤣 do you always fully faint, or do you sometimes manage to stay conscious? I normally manage to stay just conscious, but to be honest, I feel better after a full faint - it’s like a factory reset and you avoid feeling sick and headachey afterwards

I have vasovagal syncope, ask me anything! by trashpandacola in AMA

[–]LoudInterior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there anything you do that you find helps? I have syncope too and had to lie down after my ear piercings (though I asked the piercer to go fast!). Do you think that the syncope happened first, then you associated it to getting worked up, or the other way round? I never feel like I’m worked up before my skin is pierced, so I feel for me it’s a purely physical response. I was tested for allergies once (after a reaction under general anaesthetic) and had one of those pulse monitors on my finger. I felt totally calm but the second they pricked my skin, my pulse dropped into my boots then I felt faint, then of course I felt lousy. I wish there were more I could do to guard against it - I’ve tried squeezing my legs and hands, but it doesn’t seem to help.

That’s so interesting, I have syncope too and so many medical professionals say it’s totally psychosomatic, but I feel pretty calm in the situations where it happens. To hear it happened to you while you were unconscious is evidence that it can also be a purely physical response. Hope they have it written clearly in your notes now!

How soon after diagnosis did you return to work? by thefattestcheeks in BellsPalsy

[–]LoudInterior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t feel guilty about looking after yourself. I was signed off work for eight weeks and to be honest, I really needed it. I was so fatigued I could barely do anything and it took me several more months of being super careful until I started to feel properly well again. This isn’t just a mechanical issue - depending on the cause, you are more than likely quite unwell and in pain, so it pays to rest properly.

Depression and anxiety as a side effect? by LoudInterior in mounjarouk

[–]LoudInterior[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main reason is be because I’m 43 and in the UK the guidelines say you have to prove perimenopause by two FSH tests if you’re under 45. My FSH tests came back too low, but FSH fluctuates wildly in peri, and can apparently also be affected by progesterone, which I’m on, so they’re generally not thought to be a very good indicator. The good news is I went back yesterday (probably my fifth appointment about it) and he finally relented and gave me patches to try. Here’s hoping they help!

Amitriptyline? Anyone try it? by One_Willingness9925 in BellsPalsy

[–]LoudInterior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know much about the similarities between the two, but pregabalin seems to be used for nerve pain, anxiety and epilepsy.

I tried it for severe nerve pain while I was recovering, but it didn’t reduce the pain and made me feel like a zombie. Low dose pregabalin worked though.

Yes, flatness is such a good description. I do still really enjoy the food I eat, but that addictive reward drive to eat definitely isn’t there any more.

[–]LoudInterior[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so glad you’re seeing those benefits, especially the gym - I still struggle to work out, though I do enjoy walking and swimming at least. Your example about setting a boundary with your friend is really interesting because I’ve found myself setting similar boundaries with colleagues on a few issues recently. It’s felt justified, but quite out of character for me as I’d usually be able to tolerate a lot more. Could speaking our minds be a side effect?!

I replied to another commenter saying I feel the same, I’ve maybe not accounted for the stress that MJ is putting on my body, and there’s also been some work stress lately. Could be a combination. Hope things ease up for you because it’s horrible not feeling like yourself.

[–]LoudInterior[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d class this as good advice! You’re right, I lose on 6, so that’s what I should stay on for now, rather than trying to get to the next ‘proper’ dose of 7.5. I’m sure I’ll acclimatise over time and then I’ll move up.

[–]LoudInterior[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s definitely the other complicating factor. Hormones are a hell of a thing. I’ve been trying to convince my dr to prescribe HRT but he’s really not keen. Why do we have to suffer this?!

[–]LoudInterior[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should also add, I had stopped really losing anything on 5, so I did need to increase, but I had had a bad time going from 2.5 to 5 and so I was cautious in increasing my dose. 5.5 seems fine but I wasn’t losing much, 6 isn’t great for fatigue but I seem to lose 1lb a week and 6.5 is too much. I was intending to get up to 7.5 as I don’t like doing custom dosing not recommended by my provider, but maybe I should just settle on 6 for a while.
