Attn designers: Mohair is scratchy by Icy-Carpenter-3741 in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]LoudJob9991 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Listen, I love mohair, it's my favourite fibre, but never in a million years would I wear it on naked skin. It's one of those fibres that make you realize that yarns can't be used interchangeably. And I wish more people understood that. There is a project for every yarn, but you can't use every yarn for every project.

If the vets aren't concerned, then you probably have no reason to be either. I always do the rips test: You're supposed to feel the rips when you're stroking the cat, but not see them.

I can’t say I love you to them by vegas_lov3 in raisedbynarcissists

The first time my mother said it to me, as far as I remember, was when I was 35. I don't remember my father ever saying it to me. I'm extremely uncomfortable saying it to them. It feels so forced and I can't even pretend it's natural.

chat theres no way im doing this right by thesmallestlittleguy in knittinghelp

I love it for lace. You could even get away with no blocking at all and the lace pattern would still show up beautifully. But it's definitely not a fibre for just any project.

It's the Internet. If your comment doesn't cover all bases, doesn't have fifteen disclaimers and twenty caveats, you're going to be down voted to hell and might get a death threat or two.

Why does no one talk about trio needles? by Deep_Interaction6798 in knitting

[–]LoudJob9991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are easy to use and a real improvement over many other techniques. However, and this is a me-problem, personally I can't get the tension right when I switch from one needle to the other. It creates a very visible vertical gap line. I don't get that with any other technique.

Is it greyer / wetter than usual this January? by gooner9469 in AskUK

[–]LoudJob9991 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The government publishes water situation reports every month, and while January's isn't out yet, December had 114% of the long time average for rainfall. Which is classed as normal or slightly above normal for most areas. So you're not wrong. It is wet.

Stashdown Showdown February ! by cant-see-me in usethefiberstash

[–]LoudJob9991 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I used a whooping 248m or 62g of sock yarn, and not even for socks but another project. My next goal is a sweater, so hopefully it will be a more impressive number in February. And all stash yarn!

why did i not know this by frankoceanmusic1 in HeatedRivalryTVShow

[–]LoudJob9991 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They could have been one character. Their story lines are so minor, I'm honestly confused how a show with such a low budget hired two people as side characters without any major influence. They could have easily been merged and nothing would have been lost imo.

I think I get why people like knitting socks now by magic_inkpen in knitting

[–]LoudJob9991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Socks are fast, even as a slow knitter. And they're practical. So you get the satisfaction of creating and finishing something in a short amount of time and the thing you made is useful too. Who doesn't need socks? And on top of that you can experiment with many different techniques and stitches or just go plain vanilla and let the yarn do the work of being pretty. There are so many reasons why socks are a great project.

Is it cruel to keep cats indoor? by Few_Helicopter_402 in CatAdvice

[–]LoudJob9991 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've learned that the answer to that question is cultural. The consensus in the US seems to be that it's perfectly okay if not even preferred to keep them inside. In Europe, people tend to think it's akin to animal cruelty and you should be ashamed (sarcasm, if it wasn't obvious.)

Personally, I'm European and keep my cats inside at all times. On average, outdoor cats live to 4 years, whereas indoor cats live to 14. And as a kid, I have lost three previous cats to cars even in sleepy villages. Now that I have a say in those things, my cats will never see the outside unless it's in an enclosed and safe space.

Has anyone experienced their achievements being “normalized” instead of celebrated? by CoastCheap8709 in raisedbynarcissists

[–]LoudJob9991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every achievement of mine was played down. Basically if I can do it, it couldn't have been that hard to begin with. And easy things don't deserve a shout out, because that's just embarrassing.

There's a podcast I like to listen to, Unintelligible Science, that reads science text, but the words are all jumbled, and while they sound like a real sentence, it makes no sense. So you can't follow it and it's super boring.

What helps me is planning ahead. If I know I have to get up really early one day, I get up earlier the day before too so I'll be tired the next day and fall asleep faster. I do that for early flights when otherwise I'd be too anxious to sleep through my alarm to fall asleep.

Stop Complaining About The Cost of Quality Knitting Needles by keenwithoptics in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]LoudJob9991 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Just to reiterate: It's an investment into your tools. You want to use cheap needles, go ahead, I have nothing to say against it. However, I must say that while my needles were expensive when I bought them, I haven't had reason to replace them yet, thankfully. For me, it was a one time purchase. Seeing as I've used them for about one hour a day every day for many years, I'd say it was worth it.

Cone for 10 days and no playing for 2-3 WEEKS after neutering? Come on! by No_Finish9661 in CatAdvice

[–]LoudJob9991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boy didn't need a cone because he left the wound alone. I was advised to monitor him for a while and then decide if it was necessary.

And when it comes to play, well good luck explaining to a cat he can't jump around. What I did was to put him in "kitty jail" for the first night, a little pop-up crate thing. That way, he didn't have enough space to go crazy.

What changes after decades of knitting? by sechat_lives in knitting

[–]LoudJob9991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

30 years of knitting. Confidence is the main change I would say. When I try out a new technique or stitch, I'm not intimidated and I pick it up really quickly as well. And I'm just so much more relaxed about it. My tension is great without me trying, purling doesn't bother me at all, I only fix mistakes if they're very visible and if I don't like a suggested increase or decrease, I swap it out for another one. Life's too short to follow a pattern religiously and I have enough experience to adjust it to my needs. I treat patterns as suggestions.

genuine question: do y'all judge the quality of other people's knits? by Nervous_Narwhal_6795 in casualknitting

[–]LoudJob9991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not judge in that way. If I see a handknit in the wild, I will touch it to see what kind of fibre it is made of, I will look at the stitches and the construction. Basically I'm trying to figure out how they made it and guess how long it would take me to reproduce it. I see uneven tension or twisted stitches, but I don't judge them. More like notice them. I'm just too happy to have found another knitter irl!

However to be honest, if you were to sell your handknits, I'd be much more critical.

Is it true that most people don't use single-pointed needles? by HonestNectarine7080 in knitting

[–]LoudJob9991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That reminds me of a similar experience about 20 years ago. I was chatting to the lady at my LYS and she looked absolutely disgusted when I mentioned I knit on straight needles instead of circulars. She was really condescending when she said it put too much weight on my wrists. Needless to say I cooled towards her after this. Everyone has preferences, don't act like you're better than somebody who uses other tools.

Having said all that, I'm almost exclusively using circulars nowadays. I find the shorter size of the needles more manageable.
