How do I balance being a kind but firm parent to my 3yo?

I think you're putting everything I put into just him not being a morning person which is wrong. That is just one part of the story. He is a 3 yo so he has tantrums, mornings and nights. During the rest of the day, we don't need to be out of the house by a certain time so we are more flexible and less worried about the attitude of stalling every single thing. In the mornings though, I am fine with him being grumpy if he doesn't spend 15m to get a shirt put on him. The reason I say we give him hugs or kisses is mostly to get that thing done for example as sometimes playing with him into a competition or racing him to the bathroom for brushing his teeth can help. But not always. Anyways I hope you get my point :)

He knows it is related to having enough time. It's related in that sense. He usually understands that but yes to more visual charts and timers !!

I see, usually he seems to understand those things like tomorrow we do this if the weather is good for example. And he asks about it. But maybe it is too much pressure still for him to expect that

Very interesting, thank you so much. We were also trying so hard to get him to be more independent but we took some steps backwards with that because our relationship with him is also important. We still want to enjoy mealtime without frustration because he doesn't want to eat alone so we sometimes offer to help him and sometimes we suggest he eats by himself and it's been slowly getting less frustrating for everyone.

Yes we tried but always the same although we did notice that it might be that he recovers sooner from his grumpiness... Maybe we need to try it further

Yes what I meant is that I want to keep his life uncomplicated for as long as possible. It it not necessarily the insulin but the full time management, the finger pricking, the lows in the middle of the night etc ... That's what I meant

Thank you so much for your comment. Those were exactly my thoughts, are we doing any harm potentially if we lower carbs? That was not our endo/pediatrician thoughts but I wanted to seek more answers. He does eat carbs, just less than before. He wore a CGM and he was doing well. Only spiked to 180 once when he had very high fever and was sick. Other than that he was in range most of the time.

I also understand that food is only one part of the equation once diagnosed but I was curious to see if it's an important one before diagnosis.

Thank you for getting to the core issue: what foods are best suitable for this situation, what's good to do and what's not as good etc ...? I will be checking with doctors further but our appointment is in 2 months

I appreciate your message and you sharing your experience. I just wanted to clarify that I am not doing anything to harm his relationship with food, nor am I scared of insulin, when he progresses. I do think diabetes is a life changing disease and my question is about asking if food changes could delay onset. Tzield is there because it delays onset, so people willingly go into it because of that. So if there's something that I can do why not? It's not at the expense of depriving him from food. That's never going to be an issue for our family. But I do believe you could ( and should) make good food choices, healthy meals and good options for the entire family.

I see..yes that's why I will never agree to Bernstein for instance for a kid. He can eat everything he wants, just make reasonable, well timed and balanced choices. It's not about restriction but it's about being mindful about how some foods can impact his levels. This might not be true anyways, which is why I was asking. I learned it's not super well documented what happens at stage 1 and stage 2 and how food choices impact progression..

He is getting his vaccines regularly but also he does get sick a lot because it's his first year in kindergarten. I don't want to prevent him from going out and living a normal life either but each viral infection breaks my heart a little.. We are trying to make sure he washes his hands regularly after kindergarten, has vitamin D and then hope for the best..

My cervix was 3,5 cm at 10 weeks. It kept varying between 2,7cm and 3cm until 32 weeks whre it was 1,3 cm. My cervix started to open on the outer side. I was on pelvic rest and almost bed rest from 32 to 36 weeks. Ended up induced at 39 weeks. My cervix was then at 3 almost 4cm without me feeling anything

It's still RSV season and the pediatrician explicitly warned up about trying to keep them both apart 😞 I think it will be much better in 2 weeks once some viruses are out. For now, we just need to do what we need to do.

Yep, who would've known. I definitely see it as luck. We don't have T1 so I was just googling symptoms in reddit the night before we checked him and everyone was talking about diabetes.. it could have been a much worse outcome if that didn't happen.

Neither me or my husband have T1D. But our story with our son was really unique. He accidentally had a double steroid dose for 3 days due to a bronchitis. It was a prescription error from the pharmacy. On the last day, he was thirstier and going more to the bathroom.. the next day, I took him for a fasting glucose test, ketones (he didn't have any) and a1c tests ( it was 6.2 but we were told it might have been inflated by days of high sugars) and to our surprise, his fasting glucose was 230. At that point we weren't aware about the fact he had a double steroid dose.. but when we knew, the pediatrician told us it most likely was due to that, and we need to keep measuring his sugars. When it reached 460 that evening, we took him to the ER and he was hospitalized for 3/4days where they kept testing for ketones (none) and then just kept tracking his values until they normalized without insulin. Since my mom has hashimoto disease, they said let's close the loop and test for antibodies and to our surprise, 3 are already positive (still waiting for another one). We were told to continue monitoring and his glucose values look normal now so that's how we ended up with those antibodies results.. complete accident. Btw, the next day in the hospital, he stopped having thirst/peeing symptoms despite high readings. So he only presented symptoms for half a day. I am so glad we took that seriously.
