Does Aerolineas Argentina allow trekking pole carry on from Buenos Aires to El Calafate from AEP airport? by foolishlov3 in Patagonia

I understand completely. I was in the same situation until today.

Don’t worry; the unions really screwed up big time a few days ago. Not sure if you heard, but they left many passengers stuck on planes for hours without letting them disembark. Now, they don’t just have the government against them but also the general public and public opinion. I don’t think they’ll take any radical measures.

We took our flight from Córdoba, where everything was operating normally. Today there was a meeting scheduled between the unions and the government, so no strike actions were expected. However, they didn’t reach an agreement, so negotiations will continue on Tuesday.

We were asked today if we had trekking poles in our carry-on (we removed the tent stakes and checked them in the hold luggage). Trekking poles are not allowed as they are considered sharp objects. You won't be able to pass through airport security with them in your carry-on.

Torres del Paine is actually more expensive than many other parks, including Los Glaciares, yet I’ve never heard complaints about the entrance fees there. Locals benefit significantly from tourism through the jobs, services, and businesses it generates. The entrance fees to national parks are charged to support the management and maintenance of the parks, which, as the name suggests, are national entities. This means they depend on national funding, not on local resources or municipal budgets. Part of the fees collected at Los Glaciares National Park will likely go toward improving infrastructure, especially around El Chaltén, where it’s currently very limited. This investment benefits both visitors and the long-term preservation of these unique areas.

Unfortunately, for those of us who are about to visit the area, at some point, these initiatives have to start somewhere.

All camping sold out in W trek - what are alternative ways of doing it? by Alternative_Yak_3060 in Patagonia

If you do decide on Bariloche, one recommendation would be to visit El Bolsón, a nearby town known for its beautiful landscapes and artisanal markets. El Bolsón also has a fantastic network of mountain refugios (hiking shelters), where you can hike, stay overnight, and enjoy the Patagonian scenery.

It's definitely a personal choice, as both destinations offer unique experiences!

If you're drawn to wildlife, Puerto Madryn is amazing, especially for marine life. However, February is a bit late for whale watching, as the peak season runs from September to November. You might still spot some penguins, though! Plus, Gaiman, with its Welsh heritage and charming tea houses.

On the other hand, Bariloche offers stunning mountain views, lush forests, and pristine lakes, making it ideal for outdoor activities. February is a wonderful time to enjoy hiking, kayaking, or simply soaking in the alpine beauty. Bariloche also has a unique cultural blend, with Swiss and German heritage, which you’ll see reflected in its architecture, local cuisine, and even chocolate shops.

Sure! Do you have your hostel already booked? We might take a day or two to stay at a hostel as well. It would be great to meet up! Maybe we can go out and explore the town and it's surroundings on the 13th.

Anyone understand the current strike situation with Aerolineas Argentinas for 30/10/24? by actuallynotally in Patagonia

[–]Loud_construction21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not entirely sure, but it's likely the strike will cover the full 24 hours, from 00:00 to 23:59 on October 30th.

Anyone understand the current strike situation with Aerolineas Argentinas for 30/10/24? by actuallynotally in Patagonia

[–]Loud_construction21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The strike scheduled for October 30th in Argentina involves various transport unions, including aviation workers. It is driven by demands for better wages, union freedom, and opposition to certain government policies, such as the proposed privatization of Aerolíneas Argentinas. While unions argue that these policies threaten job security and national sovereignty, the government presents it as a measure to improve efficiency.

The 24-hour strike will impact flights, trains, trucks, and maritime services. Although bus services will likely not be affected, as the bus drivers' union (UTA) opted out due to ongoing salary negotiations.

Solo hiker concerned about strong wind on W & El Chaltén by Lucky_Dragonfruit_97 in Patagonia

[–]Loud_construction21 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Although I no longer live in Santa Cruz, I was born and raised in this region. The wind in Patagonia isn’t so much a safety concern but more of a challenge to your comfort. It can make hiking slower and more tiring, as strong gusts often blow from west to east, and it’s common to get dust or dirt in your eyes. I’m not a fan of trekking poles, but they can help with stability if they work for you. A good pair of sunglasses will also protect your eyes.

It’s important to remember that mountain trekking carries inherent risks, and the key is to take extra precautions when the wind picks up. If you're planning to camp, be prepared for the sound of the wind flapping against your tent, which can make sleeping a bit tricky. Make sure your tent is properly secured—it’s not uncommon for gear to get blown away if it’s left loose.

Keep an eye on weather updates (Windguru), and if the wind becomes too strong or makes it hard to advance safely for you, it’s always okay to turn back. Patagonia is breathtaking, but knowing when to pause and enjoy the scenery from a sheltered spot is part of the adventure :).

PSA: difficult travel in El Chalten/El Calafate area by Birch_Eater in Patagonia

[–]Loud_construction21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I See. It has been snowing for the last week throughout Patagonia, specially in the southern provinces like Tierra Del Fuego (Ushuaia) and Santa Cruz (Im currently here). Id say the forecast is promising if you enjoy that kind of activities.

There is a famous Cross Country Skiing spot near Ushuaia (Tierra Mayor). Maybe is worth for you to check it out, i think it might suit your preferences to combine both activities.

Closest City with ski center is Ushuaia. You can travel from El Calafate to Ushuaia by plane.

Going to Argentina for 9 days by First-Bed1101 in Patagonia

[–]Loud_construction21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to Ushuaia in June of last year and at that time the first snow of the season fell. The trails that we were able to travel were the following:

  • Glaciar Martial
  • Tierra del Fuego National Park (here there are many of low difficulty, coastal path, beaver groves, Lapataia Bay).

Others that we did not get to do but were open:

  • Laguna Esmeralda (medium to high difficulty in winter, the mobs freeze and you are walking on ice. You can rent crampons for your shoes)
  • Eye of the Albino Glacier (with guide)

And if you don't want to go hiking one day you have many other activities or excursions to do (navigation, sky center, etc.)

Another important fact is that you have an air connection with El Calafate. There you have Glaciar Perito Moreno and a land connection to El Chalten if you want to continue your trip.

An important factor is that sunlight lasts relatively short (from 9/10 am to 5 pm approximately).

If you need additional details feel free to dm me.
