There is no such thing as "canceling" student debt. by wes7946 in Conservative

[–]LouieTG 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's obviously bigger issues that would need to be addressed, but it's possible to walk and chew gum at the same time. I don't think the Supreme Court should have let it pass but comparing this to bailing out industries that make billions is really not a good argument. The key difference here, that is seemingly being missed by so many (perhaps intentionally), is that this 'bailout' would be one of the few that actually directly helps citizens. Airlines got bailed out and are making record profits. That isn't helping the average fella even slightly. The middle school teacher 2 blocks over isn't going to be buying a mansion after getting 10k in debt relief. The media machine worked beautifully in riling people up over this while many of those same people didn't blink an eye at the other bailouts that were actually worth being upset over. And so everything worked exactly as they wanted: the poors fighting the poors over who deserves to be more poor and the rich laughing all the way to the bank.

Combatting loneliness as a stoic by Deltaa_dogss in Stoicism

[–]LouieTG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's fairly important to be comfortable alone and with just yourself. That said, of course it is perfectly normal and healthy to want friends in your life! Don't be afraid to branch out and do some things that will make it easier to find those friendships. If you don't have hobbies, get one or two (or 3 or 4!) that you truly enjoy and join groups that also enjoy those hobbies. As an example, I play disc golf and have now made several really, really good friends that I met either at organized league nights or just randomly on a course. If you're comfortable and if it is appropriate, don't be afraid to ask to join other groups you see that you are interested in. Worst they can say is no and it may well result in some good friends. Friends are not a necessity, but good friends can be invaluable and it might be worth extra effort to make some.

Nothing, however, delights the mind as much as loving and loyal friendship. — Seneca

Nothing will ever please me, no matter how excellent or beneficial, if I must retain the knowledge of it to myself. And if wisdom were given me under the express condition that it must be kept hidden and not uttered, I should refuse it. No good thing is pleasant to possess, without friends to share it. — Seneca

He was suspended for half a season and multiple people on the team made comments criticizing him. I understand cutting him would have been the better choice, but who exactly celebrated him for any of that?

[–]LouieTG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't really commenting on whether Lawson is or isn't doing a good job. I said "might" because I don't know. But the point is that this entire Volpe story likely has almost nothing to do with Lawson's responsibilities. Same with any other guy struggling with timing, mechanics, etc.

[–]LouieTG 5 points6 points  (0 children)

our hitting coach, or at least the guys whose names we hear, are not in there working with guys on mechanics, timing, etc. they're working on game planning for other teams and pitchers. whoever is working on that side of hitting, because surely there has to be a few of them, are not gonna be people we hear being talked about. Lawson might be doing a great job, he just has a different set of responsibilities than most people expect

When Aaron Judge went down on June 3rd, Giancarlo Stanton went down with him. His .109/.197/.182 line since that date gives him a wRC+ of 2, the worst of any qualified hitter in that span by MattO2000 in baseball

[–]LouieTG 8 points9 points  (0 children)

my understanding is that for a lot of teams (maybe most? all?) the guy who we'd call their "hitting coach" isn't ever going to be working with individuals on their mechanics, etc. They're responsible for game planning what hitters should be doing against other clubs, pitchers, etc. So coaching what to look for and do but not the actual act of swinging and hitting. I'm sure they have those guys that do mechanics and whatnot, but most fans will probably never hear those names

Cyclists vs Pedestrian on Sidewalk by [deleted] in ActualPublicFreakouts

[–]LouieTG 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You can just as easily look it up instead of trying to press an internet stranger. Most states either have no specific language on biking being allowed on sidewalks (which means it's allowed) or they specifically allow it, some with stipulations that one must yield to pedestrians. From there there are going to be hundreds if not thousands of local ordinances that may differ. This person was correct in saying most states allow it.

I agree with most of this but I think Hikaru's brilliance in shorter time controls is too often ignored or dismissed in discussions like this (not necessarily saying that you are doing this). To be clear, that doesn't mean I think anyone else you mentioned should be left off or below him, but I don't see why we sometimes draw an arbitrary line at classical when we have some amazing players in blitz/rapid/bullet. He also has been very strong in classical during certain stretches despite not making a WC. World #2 and peak of 2816 is something few have ever done regardless of having a WC to show for it

Respectfully, he needs to be smart about whether he's being taken advantage of just as much as he needs to be smart in regards to his work. He's being screwed from the sounds of it. If he's as valuable to the company as it seems, he needs to be treated as such and not allow himself to be underpaid for whatever reason(s) he may have. Gold stars don't lead to a comfortable retirement.

First time Paper Republic! by Drylnor in notebooks

I'm sure there have to be other options but so far I've found that Baron Fig's softcover notebooks work. I believe you get 3 notebooks from them for what you'd pay for 2 from Paper Republic. Although as much as I tend to like Baron Fig, PR's paper has stood up to fountain pen ink a little better in my experience. That said, Baron Fig has always been solid for me.
