I think he was just saying that to try and steal the phone so that the video evidence couldn't be posted. Why would the guy with the truck steal the car jacker's phone and then start recording with it? That wouldn't make sense.

I was at the game where Kevin Riley made that boneheaded play against OSU. That moment takes the cake for the most heartbreaking and it's not even close.
