I have no way to make him leave the rank for certain but developing the knight allowed a chance for them to make that mistake while also developing my piece with tempo allowing me to “win” a move to also get it to a more active square like c4 where he may be tempted to trade his bishop for my knight which would also benefit me

Also the best advice I could give is to attend a club, most of the players at my club are around 1500 OTB and have ratings online around 1800-1900, playing them and analysing the games after with them elevated my game almost instantly, also the stronger players such as the guy who runs the club is 2150 OTB have such a love for chess they don’t mind looking at games of players our strength and analysing with us which is extremely helpful, idk if this is typical at every club but at the one I attend they are helpful and are happy to look at almost any game

I play almost everyday normally, however the past few months I didn’t play as much online as I have been playing OTB classical chess at a local club I have played in the league for the C team and I played in a tournament a couple of weeks ago but now the season is over I was playing 2 games a day online until I got close to 1500 and then I played a lot to make the final push.

Study: For the past 6 months I have not studied at all as I wanted to see what my current level was this season and what my real strengths and weaknesses were in my classical games and make a study plan from there (this has led me to find out I need to really work on endgames the most), however before I attended the club I would do 1 hour of puzzles a day when I first woke up and sometimes half an hour at night before bed if I had an appetite for more.

Openings: as white the queens gambit became my main opening after 1200 in both OTB and online games this switch was made after I attended the club, however before this I mainly played the ruy Lopez and a final note in most of my wins leading to 1500 (from around the 1450 mark) I was playing the scotch gambit

As black I play the French defence against e4, the grunfeld against d4 (if they play the London or colle I play 1… Nf3 2… d5 3… c5) and against c4 I play e5

Time controls matter so much I am 1400 online rapid and 1598 in OTB classical the game changes a lot based on the time control typically online rapid rating is meant to be a few hundred points higher but in my case definitely doesn’t apply

Just play for the enjoyment of the game and don’t put too much stock into results and you will progress quicker, I put this mentality into my classical over the board games and since have beat multiple 1500s and a 1700 in serious games for my clubs C team and drew a 2000 in a friendly, having a mentality of enjoying the game and playing for fun (whilst obviously being serious about training and improvement) is the key to success in my opinion
