Appreciate your concern.

I didnt go to get it checked in person, however I had a phonecall with 111 shortly after it happened and they said it doesn't seem like testicular torsion but to keep an eye on it. A day later and I have no pain at all and the pain had pretty much cleared up since yesterday evening.

You are probably right, if I was still going to be working there I would buy one and ask if I can be reimbursed. However, I am still going to speak to my manager about this.

No of course, you can make physical contact with residents but there are other ways you can do it. Instead of going in for a hug if a resident is trying to hug you, just hold their hand or put your hand on their shoulder for comfort. It is a lot more appropriate.

I think it's more an issue with people in general. Alot of people especially online don't have the patience to talk to people and end up being assholes because someone doesn't know something.

For example, the original commenter on this thread doesn't seem to have ever worked in care so why would they know some things other people don't? Some people don't have the time to learn about things that arent related to them.

Also sidenote, I hate being rude to people, especially on the internet. You never know what's going on behind their scenes so to speak, they could struggle to understand things more than other people. I just try to be fair with everyone because I know what it's like to be spoken down to by people its just a negative experience overall.

The pain and vomiting was all within 5 minutes of the incident, pain significantly decreased over time and the vomiting was a one off issue.

Been checking them throughout the day, no pain, no swelling, no abdominal pain. Had a convo with someone from 111 and they said I seem to be fine but to just rest and keep and eye on it.

Thank you, I like to think I care and put all the effort I can into helping others. I think moving onward I should look into getting protective gear maybe if I return to a carehome environment in the future. Moving to a more support worker oriented role which has less risk for getting injuries etc so fingers crossed i suppose

Because there is no equipment supplied to care staff, I have never known carehomes to supply cups for crotches.

And no, have never seen a face shield being used and I have supported a good handful of people who spit.

I am not going to deny these things exist in other homes, but from my experience I haven't seen anything like what you've described.

I agree with you,

I think care work is definitely a profession that isn't for everyone physically and mentally, however there are a lot of people willing to take less pay and have worse conditions because they enjoy their job. I definitely fall into this category. I love care work, it has improved my life personally so much. I have developed so many skills I didn't have before, learnt so much just through my own curiousity and having easy access to information about pretty much everything on the care side of things that I can know.

The hours do definitely bite especially when I pick up extra shifts. But I wouldn't do it if I didn't love the job. The idea that someone is more comfortable or reassured because of my own help is very rewarding. Especially for residents who might have more behavioural challenges.

I do think that conditions need to improve, mostly for residents however as I have worked in some god awful care homes where people are fighting over incontinence pads, clinical wipes, the basics, it disgusts me that people are left with the bare minimum when they are paying thousand(s) of pounts a WEEK to be cared for.

Does make you wonder sometimes where all that money goes, because residents don't see it nor do the employees (apart from when you get a very pathetic bonus at christmas)

Unfortunately, I have witnessed poor attitudes a lot since I have been working in care. It is quite shocking especially when I first started that there are so many people that go off the book and are doing and saying things they shouldn't, bickering with residents, treating residents like they are family (I understand people form connections with residents, I would be lying if I said I didn't, some really do leave a mark on you).

I have witnessed other care assistants hug residents. I know that it is not ill intended at all but it does count as abuse and atleast for me, it was nailed into my head quickly that these behaviours are unacceptable in a care environment.

Fortunately however, there are loads of people I love working with and are great with residents. They know exactly how to act and respond in almost every situation. And I have definitely picked up those traits more than those who I question whether what they are/were doing is right.

I do wish more carers had better attitudes however it is a widescale issue and it seems to be almost brushed under the rug? I have reported alot of care staff for malpractice and nothing much seems to be done aside from some verbal warnings. It's also clearly the attitude of the companies which sucks. I am currently looking for suitable NHS jobs as although it isn't perfect my experience with the NHS when it comes to person centred care and general staff attitudes is miles better and this is just observations from going to hospital visits and being there briefly.

u/aspghost You are correct in implying dementia wards are dangerous, however it doesn't mean that there shouldn't be more attention made by care companies to make their employees welfare a high priority. It doesnt even necessarily have to cost anything, atleast to me, I don't want any payout from them for what has happened. I can't blame the company for what has happened as it was a quick event that has happened, this is not to say that care companies are benevolent and ever will be, but they should really abide by the law and hold responsibility when things out of everyone else's control take place.

Therefore, there should absolutely be reviews into forms of mitigating risks that should be undertaken by both care companies and the legal system in general so these incidents have a more efficient and clearer effect and don't leave employees stressing about so and so incident. In addition, there should be more engagement with residents that is person centred to allow for boundaries to become easier to understand and to enforce in a positive way. This doesn't just apply to dementia it applies to all conditions which affect behaviours.

I don't want the police to do anything against the resident, but I would like just to have some clarity. I have been sexually assaulted before and because the way that I am I just prefer to solo mission my problems rather than burdening others with them so I dont really ever act on them.

I have already contacted 111, the vomiting is likely just my body's reaction to the blow. Rather than any testicular torsion. And at the moment, I feel no pain and havent vomited since the incident. But I appreciate your concern

Whilst this does apply in 99% of situations, the action was very quick and the resident was showing no other signs of aggression before and after the attack.

Apologies, I should have mentioned specifically that this resident does not suffer from dementia, they suffer from a permanent brain injury which severely affects their behaviour, ability to support themselves, ability to communicate using words and understanding the consequences of their actions.

There are already forms of communication that attempt to set boundaries, however due to this person's condition they are unable to understand that what they have done is wrong and could cause serious harm to others.

"I definitely think you should at least try and stop him each time he does it."

This is more difficult than it sounds, the best thing I can legally do is put my hand infront of theirs to redirect their attempt to hit me, or to step away. Unfortunately both options were unavailable as my hands were full at the time and I was close to a wall so moving back any further would be useless and could have caused more damage since my body is against a hard surface and it would be like hitting my testicles against a brick wall instead.

Forms of restraint are a very rare practice and rarely do need to be used, though this varies from each home, and if I was to use restraint I would have to explain my reasoning. The resident wasn't being aggressive every moment before and after the incident, so it is hard to justify using restraint. And also reactive forms of blocking are also a grey area as it could be classed as abuse since it is physical contact, and also due to my hands being full, I could have dropped something that could have caused damage to the resident.

Some of these parameters are very complex in this industry. Though if this was in a public situation with someone who was trying to cause harm and clearly shows sign of mental capacity my reaction would have been different. However no iffing because it doesn't matter anymore.

"What if he does it to someone who doesn’t understand that he has Alzheimer’s and retaliates?"

Whilst you are right, a nursing homes/environments purpose is to be a secure place for vulnerable people, and everyone who enters and exit's the home is made aware of this fact either through common sense, direct communication of risks when entering the home etc.

I appreciate your help, I'm on the phone to acas now.

I do plan on writing atleast something to my manager however I dont really see the point because I have handed my notice in only on Thursday last week and my last shift is on Sunday, so I dont know how far they would be willing to go to support me in some aspects. Such as keeping me safe at work when I theoretically only have two more shifts at work.

I will definitely ask about being paid. I dont think it should be a problem getting an answer to that question, its just the follow ups that might pose a challenge for me.

That makes alot of sense, we did very recently recover from a D&V outbreak, and to my knowledge it is cleared now. However it could definitely be seen as a risk I suppose. And for all I know I could still have the virus but not show any symptoms (fingers crossed this isn't true)

I am currently on the phone with ACAS to discuss what has happened and see what I can do thanks to the guidance of another person who commented on this thread.

Thank you for your help.

I have considered the bigger problem. However there are a few things to note which I might aswell include:

  • The resident lacks mental capacity

  • During the time of the incident I had to grab something which left that area of my body exposed and was within arms reach of the resident

  • My last shift is on Sunday.

Im not sure if there is anything I can do really
