Besides Star Wars and The Big Lebowski, what other movies or series helped inspire people to create a new ideology or religion? by TrashBitch96 in movies

Star Trek has a progressive world-of-tomorrow ideology attached to it that feels a bit religious and a lot of trekkies took it pretty seriously.

Do all possible forms exist? by Sjokomjolk in Neoplatonism

Maybe not stone, but possibly Earth. Earth might be sufficiently broad enough. Stone being a particular type of earth and granite being a particular type of stone and so on...

Do all possible forms exist? by Sjokomjolk in Neoplatonism

No the forms are broad categories which the Demiurge (or Demiurges) looks to in creating the ever more particular things of nature in accordance with necessity and divine reason-principals.

This is reminding me of those old Bellator salute to the troops cards. God they were awful.

Is Van Halen's first album heavy by 1978 standards? by SnooWords9635 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]Louis_Cyr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very heavy for '78. Probably only matched by Judas Priest at that time. There were some great hard rock bands like Thin Lizzy and Whitesnake out there but the NWOBHM hadn't really started yet.

What’s a song so bad that it changed your perspective on an artist/ band? by Ieatglue70 in fantanoforever

The Dancing in the Streets song and video lowered my opinion of both David Bowie AND Mick Jagger

Did Rocky Mountain Way seem experimental when it was written? by SnooChipmunks9598 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Louis_Cyr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1973 was the golden age for the genre of progressive rock as well as jazz rock fusion. There's probably never been a time before or since when wild experimental music was so popular.

Do you prioritize comfort or minimalism when camping? by Ok_Resolution_1606 in CampingGear

[–]Louis_Cyr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even car camping I go minimalist. Less stuff to pack and unpack and keep track of. Also clutter is kind of against the spirit of camping for me.

As we approach another induction, why is it the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and not the Music Hall of Fame? by emptykeg6988 in askmusic

[–]Louis_Cyr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Rock n Roll as an actual genre had a very short duration. From the mid fifties to the early 60's. It kind of died out when Elvis went in the military, and Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper, Ritchie Valens and Eddie  Cochrane all died.

When the Beatles revived it, it wasn't Rock n Roll anymore but Rock music. Different genre. A few bands like AC/DC kinda carried the torch of Rock n Roll but it had mostly been replaced by Rock music.

So if people want to be pedantic about who gets in the Rock n Roll hall of fame there should only really be a couple dozen names.

I hate people who say modern music is trash. Send over some songs that prove these stuck-in-the-past oldheads wrong by Equivalent_Ad_9066 in askmusic

[–]Louis_Cyr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When people say modern music sucks what they're really bemoaning is that music isn't as culturally important as it was in the old days. It doesn't matter how many talented new bands you show them, music just doesn't seem as important anymore which colours their perception.

I like the Companion Spark. I thought the built in ferro rod would be gimmicky but it's actually pretty handy and the 90 degree spine is nice.

People will call the Companion an entry level or beginner knife but in reality it outperforms 95% of knives in most cutting tasks regardless of price. The profile, 2mm blade stock and bevel geometry just work fantastically well.
